I’ve had very few meaty stouts like this before, and even fewer that were bourbon barrel-aged. Cheers to new beers!

Bottled 04/18/13, three months before the date of this tasting.

A: A bold, creamy brew with an opaque chocolate body and a sizeable head; it’s a full two inches of dark khaki cream, slow to form but a little quick to go. Some sticky lacing strands here and there.

S: A robust, inviting mix of coffee-forward roasts and heavy chocolate tones – it’s one of those beers that’s strong enough that you can smell it as soon as you crack the bottle. The residual sugars are deep, with a single whiff giving a noseful of vanilla ice cream, Oreos, Black Forest cake, and Irish cream. Scents of espresso, toasted almonds, campfire, and smoked ham (just a hint) make up the roasts.

T: Complex, layered, and monumentally enjoyable. Begins with a hardy breadiness; tastes of biscuit dough and baguette crust give this palate a dense character for other flavors to build upon. Bitter roast and hop flavors, spicy and intense, dry out of the mouth with bold notes of pine sap, chili pepper, astringent black tea, charred oak, and chocolate-covered espresso beans. Sweet flavors are reminiscent of vanilla cream soda, butterscotch, melted caramel, and semi-dark chocolate, all controlled in their richness; nothing’s cloying. Finishes dry in the way most DIPAs do – with a flavor of thick pine resin – but this time there’s the barrel’s lingering tones of whiskey and bacon (i.e., the breakfast of champions).

M: One of the slowest-burning beers I’ve had in recent memory. Starts creamy and full, enough to chew on for a moment before being quickly replaced by a tingling dryness. The alcohol burn builds and builds, eventually replacing the dry hop profile with boozy heat. In the end, the feeling of warmth gets pretty intense; at 12.5%, it’s to be expected.

O: I really, really enjoyed this beer – a definite must-try if it’s in your area. Clown Shoes got the barrel-aging just right here. Even though it’s 100% barrel-aged, the whiskey and wood character doesn’t dominate what is already a solid beer: it enhances it. Well done.

On to the last bomber from Brez.

It pours an opaque brownish sludge. Short caramel colored head falls to a thin ring that leaves behind a few spots of lacing that slide back into the drink. 4.0

The aroma teeters between smoky, and sweet. I get chocolate, toasted marshmallow, anise, burnt caramel, and wood. I'm guessing its barrel aged, no oak, no vanilla, but there is some peat. I'm not a fan of the scents, but they are balanced very well. 4.0

Its flavors fall in line, just not as balanced. I taste coco, prune, toasted marshmallow, anise, with a peppery bite. Not sure what I'm dealing with here at all, not a big fan either. 3.5

It has a medium body, which seems a little thin with all its flavor. It has a long warm finish. 3.5

A slow sipper for sure. Much more suited for a cold winter day. 3.5

I really have no clue as to what beer this is, or even a style. Maybe it's an Imperial Barrel Aged Porter.... nope, it is a Porcine Unidragon - Clown Shoes. If this is the worst beer I get, then I guess I'm doing good.
