An aggressive pour yields a dark brown, nearly black pour with a touch of mahogany and a one finger creamy beige head. The nose is complex and amazing with lots of roasty cocoa, cinnamon, dark chocolate, vanilla, oak, subtle chili peppers, and nice bourbon notes. The taste follows suit and is even bolder than the nose. Lots of cocoa and chocolate fudge along with hints of cinnamon, dark fruits, vanilla, tobacco, licorice, oak, bourbon, and subtle chili peppers. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with slightly fizzy carbonation and a nice warming finish. It leans a bit towards the thin side for the style. Overall, this was a bold and flavorful beer that barely missed hitting it out of the park for me. Another great offering from one of the most underrated breweries out there.

22oz bottle poured into a chalice.
A: The deepest brown can get before it becomes black. No head whatsoever. Tiny dots of lacing.
S: Brown cocoa powder, toasted crust. Chipotle. Whiff of tart cherry. Oak and barrel. Tinges of bourbon and alcohol.
T: Subdued brown bread and crust. Brown cocoa powder. Hint of milk chocolate. Ghostly notes of chipotle pepper with a very retrained heat. Bourbon and wood. Caramel. Tart cherry. Fig and spicy alcohol. Woody and crusty finish, a little boozy.
M: Creamy and silky. Thinned a little by the barrel. Lingering pepper heat and alcohol warmth.low carbonation.
O: Knocked down a little by the barrel aging. It takes over more than it accentuates. Perhaps a little less time in the barrel.
