Poured into a snifter.
3.25 A: Black color. One finger of frothy light brown head, which fell quickly and left no lacing.
4.5 S: Smell of this is great. It's totally bourbon forward, but it's just what I was in the mood for. Big leathery start with lots of vanilla. Melon, raisin, and caramel. The base beer offers gives a nice roastiness with chocolate and molasses. The chiles are buried way down in there.
4.25 T: The taste integrates all the wonderful smells together in a very pleasing way. The bourbon is relatively less powerful which allows the base to come out stronger. Again lots of leather, vanilla, raisin, and chocolate. Layers of caramel, hints of molasses, plenty of roast. Very nice overall.
4.75 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lots of great creaminess and supremely smooth. The alcohol is so very well hidden. The only clue that it's there is a pleasant mild warming.
4.5 D: Very good beer. So much better than their regular imperial stout.

22 oz. bottle poured into a Founders snifter.
Appearance: Pours black with a thin beige head. Not much head retention.
Smell: There is a lot going on here. Bourbon, chiles, vanilla, milk chocolate. An interesting dark fruit presence (primarily back cherry) comes into the picture and takes over a bit before being covered up by more chocolate and vanilla.
Taste: Vanilla and milk chocolate up front with some more of that dark fruit. Cinnamon and a bit of chile pepper (not really any heat, but a nice smoky chipotle flavor). Bourbon is very subtle in the flavor profile. I could go for more bourbon and less dark fruit, but overall this is a great flavor profile - complex and delicious.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, medium carbonation.Would prefer a little less carbonation in this one.
Overall: Great showing from Clown Shoes. There is a lot going on in this beer and it comes together quite well.
