I purchased a 22oz bottle from Total Wine about one month ago. I noticed the bottling date for this beer is 1/11/13, about 9 months ago. I purchased this older bottle intentionally to see how age has affected this beer. I think I made the right decision.
Pours pitch black, opaque, with a slightly fizzy, mocha tan colored head. I dont see much lacing but the head sticks around for a while; a nice feat for a highly abv beer.
Aroma is basically bourbon. When I purchase a bourbon barrel aged beer, I dont mind some upfront bourbon notes. Just as a dry hop IPA should smell of frsh hops, there should be some bornon aromas in a barrel aged beer. Also, lots of vanilla, slightly oaky. Large dose of bitter chocolate, no pepper in the aroma.
Outstanding flavor. Again, bourbon up front, with chocolate, alcohol, vanilla, following. No pepper taste but there is a vit of residual heat associated with a spicy pepper. Full bodied, on the sweeter side but not cloying.
I have been impressed with all of the Clown Shoes beers I have tried for the most part. This could fit in that upper tier of bourbon barrel aged beer. Alcoholic without being too boozy or sweet. Loved it!
