I felt compelled to write this review after the rating for Galactica seems to hover below 90 and in my humble opinion it does not do this beer justice.
Appearance is not a factor for me, so I'll skip right to the smell. Deliciously hoppy. Love Galaxy hops. Tropical fruit - mango, guava, perhaps a bit of peach in the background. Pine notes and a hint of resin.
The taste follows the bouquet quite well and leaves nothing to desire.
Mouthfeel is full and extremely satisfying.
Overall this has become my go-to double IPA as it is (thankfully) readily available from my local liquor store. The guys at Clown Shoes have knocked this one out of the park with an incredible balance that makes the beer oh so drinkable while hiding the alcohol really well. I would have it every day if my wife would only let me :)
The only thing I have noticed on this one is that the taste does fade a bit the older the beer gets (a true statement for most IPAs). If you can find it, make sure you stay within 8 weeks of the bottling date to get the most out of the experience. (1,059 characters)

This beer pours a clear amber body with a small offwhite head.

Nose is insane. Holy shit! Is the phrase most offen spoken upon first smell. Huge citric fresh hops and clean fresh grain. Right up there with the best DIPA.

Taste is medium bodied. Smooth caramel malt follow by huge citric and floral and resin hop flavor and bitterness. Just lush flavor from start to finish. Huge and in charge nd well balanced in every sip. Ends with a lingering resin hop. Nice.!!

How is this beer getting such low reviews? This beer is like a clear clone of Heady Topper. Absolutely spectacular beer. A big hop heads wet dream. (616 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Stella goblet. Bottled on 1/22/14 and drunk on 3/5/14.

A- pours an amber orange color with a white frothy head. Extravagant lacing all around the glass as I sip and a thin filmy head that stays on too of the beer.

S- smells of crystal malt and perhaps carapils. Galaxy hops are a strong presence but a heavy malt base is what makes this brew smell delicious! 8% abv? I can't tell. Nicely done.

T- tastes of bready malts and earthy hops with a slightly bitter, citrus flavor on the finish. A whole lot of flavor packed into this brew, it begins as a sweet succulent malty delight and finishes like a bitter ex girlfriend with a bite of dirty hops. Surprisingly the abv is not present whatsoever!

M- quite prickly on the tongue at first but then finishes off very slick. Leaves the tongue with a dryness for a few minutes, however leaving me salivating after those few minutes. Very drinkable for an 8% abv

O- a well done brew. Very earthy with a drinkable character despite the higher abv. Much unlike other IPAs, this is not ridiculously over hopped nor is it too "hot" in flavor. Overall a delicious brew! (1,145 characters)

Bottled 7-5-13

Fairly dark amber, not much head, but nice webs of lacing formed along the side of the glass as I drank.

Love the aroma--a combination of bready and caramely malts are there, but the hops dominate the nose, as both dank vegetal (dried sage?) and unsweetened raisin fruitcake smells waft out of the glass. There is something vaguely Christmasy about this beer.

But not in a cloyingly sweet way. Thankfully, this is a hop-lovers delight, and very drinkable. Taste follows aroma pretty precisely. I find it to be on the border of IPA and DIPA, the 8% alcohol feels about right, and the flavors are well integrated into a delicious, balanced yet hop-forward taste. No doubt this beer is best when fresh.

Galactica is definitely on the oily side, but not to the point that it affects overall crispness or or gets too heavy.

I disagree with reviewers who see this as just another run-of-the-mill IPA. It has several unique aspects, including the integration of Galaxy hops into an interesting malt complex that does not overwhelm with sweetness or doughiness, and an intriguing mouthfeel. Galactica is a stellar new choice for lovers of hoppy beahs. (1,163 characters)

Poured into a shaker pint glass. The beer pours hazy amber with a thin, quickly dissipating white head and lots of visible tiny rising bubbles. If you like galaxy hops, you can smell them prominently in the aroma. There are nice aromas of citrus and passionfruit as well as some of the toffee sweetness you'd expect from a DIPA. The flavor is much maltier than you would expect. The citrus and passionfruit are there in the flavor along with the strong malt backbone with some nice sweetness. The body is full with moderate carbonation. This is a sipping beer, but a pleasant one. This is an excellent beer. (607 characters)

Chill haze may have affected this brew as I poured. Head was average in height and off white in color. Caramel and dried fruit aromas hit the nose first, followed by a brilliant earthy profile of aroma hops. This brew wows in the taste department with an amazing malt base consisting of caramel and deep fruity flavors. The taste finishes with substantial but not overpowering bittering hops. Not too carbonated and feels balanced on the palate considering its deep flavors. Overall an amazing brew. (499 characters)

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams Pint glass.

A: An orangish copper color that is not crystal clear. The decent 1 in. head diminishes but leaves a good lacing on the glass.

S: Fruity and fun, the sweetness of the malts make almost tropical. Mangos or pineapples come through and make the mouth water.

T: The hops are strong and fruity, not too citric but balancing with the malts makes it keep with the tropical aroma, mainly pineapples. Leaves a pleasant bitter aftertaste that reminds you that you are drinking an IPA.

M: Juicy and wetting, with a great poppy carbonation.

O: Great brew. The juicy hopped up flavor is balanced by the sweet malts and makes for a great fruity DIPA. 10/10 will drink again. Stoked that it came in a 4 pack! (761 characters)

The highly anticipated new IPA from Clown Shoes is here, and she's gorgeous! This brew pours a radiant shade of amber, with crimson undertones. Absolutely stunning appearance. Intermittent bubbles are rising to the surface, indicating light carbonation. There is a faint haze to the liquid, and a healthy, cream-colored head gracing the surface. The initially huge effervescence wanes to about a quarter-inch in time, and there is some light lacing to be found on the glass as well.

The aroma is extraordinarily enticing, as the essence of sweet mango, passionfruit, and Valencia oranges are drawn into my nose with each whiff. Once tasted, I found the flavor to be much more sturdy than the ethereal aroma would suggest. Very tart malts and bittersweet, resinous hops traverse the palate in what is quite the fine balance! Many IPAs smack the drinker upside the head with a drying bitterness, and then, an afterthought of sweetness may follow... not so with this one. Galactica has a more refined taste. A pleasant tingling sensation accompanies the gradual fade of flavor in the finish, leaving me wanting more. Its moderate mouthfeel is a huge positive... the beverage goes down quite easily. The ABV seems almost non-existent initially, but as my insatiable urge to consume this continues, I am feeling a satisfying warming sensation.

Overall, I am very excited to have experienced tasting this beer, because it means that there's only going to be much more greatness to come from Clown Shoes. I had a discussion with a fellow BA about the best breweries recently, and one thing we could agree upon was that the best have sensational examples of stouts and IPAs. We already know Clown Shoes knows stouts... Now the entry of Galactica into their roster is going to increase their prominence in the beer enthusiast community, without any doubt. I'm going to drink another one. (1,881 characters)

Had on Tap in a tulip glass

A) Cloudy, copper orange color, dark orange center. Thick 2 finger head that has an orange hue with lots of lacing.

S) Wow reminds me of a west coast DIPA, citrusy fruits, apricot, mango, sour candy, honey

T) Honey, hard candy, citrus type fruits, no lingering alcohol

M) Juicy, thick and creamy. Low carbonation.

O) Absolutely delish!, one of my new favorite DIPAs very West Coast for an East Coast. (436 characters)

Picked up a single a Total Wine in Orlando Fl $2.49

Poured into a DFH signature glass. Second beer of the night.
Appearance was the color of a used penny, with a tall two finger rocky head that hung around for my enjoyment. This had the mouthfeel of a good malty beer with the great aroma and taste of a quality IPA. Big presents of grapefruit , tropical fruits and pine with out being too bitter. I could drink this for a month straight with out complaining.
Galactica is my heroine. Kicking ass with her clown shoes and hop staff. (534 characters)

Appearance: Amber hued with a small/medium frothy head, not completely clear but not opaque

Nose: Hops; juicy , fruity citrusy hops, a little backend hop-funk; clean grain malt smell

Taste: up-front hop character, citrusy, juicy, coating and nuggety hops balanced by a significant sweet maltiness. Finish is rather bitter but not unpleasant; hops stick around longer than a lot of it's double IPA competitors.

Overall: Excellent; fares well against other double IPAs in it's category; as this was a fairly young (less than a month from bottling) bottle, a lot of the hop freshness was there. Definitely a brew that should be drank young. (640 characters)

Pours an attractive solid copper/amber color with not much carbonation but with definite lacing. Nice looking beer which makes me want to taste it.

Smells fresh, hoppy, somewhat piney – the smell makes me want to taste it.

Taste (finally!) Starts out sweet and malty with sharp flowery hop profile which reminds you this IS definitely an IPA. That’s followed by an interesting bitter aftertaste, but which does not linger. Yummy stuff. GREAT balance between sweet malt, and bitter hops. After just a few sips, that bitter aftertaste all but disappears!! All you taste are delicious sweet malt and equally delicious bitter hops – very nice. I could not really taste the alcohol, but after just 6 oz., I got this warming sensation and very satisfying buzz which reminded me of its 8% ABV…and made me smile. 

Mouthfeel: some creaminess, not much carbonation, feasting tastebuds…

Overall a VERY solid and tasty IPA, with an awesome sweet and malty profile. I am buying more… (989 characters)

Appearance: Lively amber body with a light copper tint under a 2" finely bubbled bone white lacy foam cap. Smell: Big grassy spicy hop nose, fresh fragrant flowery meadow – early spring to mid-June – some fruit as well along with tons of honey.Taste: Clean malt flavors laced wuith light, large pitted fruits and a variety of citrus with a big background citrus bitterness. Mouthfeel: Very creamy texture with a medium full body and medium levels of carbonation. (466 characters)

Very well balanced - the alcohol stays in the background. Slightly sweet, thus the hops take an evident but back seat. This is not a one and done for me. I tried this because their Hoppy Feet 1.5 is outstanding. Although this Double IPA is not outstanding, it is very good. (278 characters)

About one month old.

A deep orange copper color. Medium had, decent lacing.

S: peaches, pineapple, pine, grapefruit, really pungent and super fruity and tropical

T: taste is a great blend of tropical fruit and citrus. Significant honey and caramel malt backbone. It's pretty well balanced for a hop bomb. Not overly bitter. Lots of peach, lemon, and blood oranges going on. Some dank herbal notes too.

M: very carbonated, super soft, quite sessionable for what it is.

O: AWESOME beer with a really interesting hop profile, super aromatic. Highly recommended. On par with hoponious union for local hop bombs. (617 characters)

12 ounce bottle purchased from Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont, MA. Bottled on 5-30-2013

Appearance: Golden amber with a decent amount of thin and quickly diffusing white head.

Smell: Strong presence of the galaxy hops in the aroma. Slight hints of grapefruit and citrus with a clean bitterness. Quite a pleasant and refreshing smell.

Taste: Malty and hoppy, but in almost perfect harmony. The hop character is very forward, but doesn't overpower, and doesn't overstay it's welcome. The taste hangs around just long enough to be important, and then gently fades into clean citrus aftertaste. As it warms up, the malt becomes stronger, and the sweetness really comes forward. I didn't taste any alcohol, however, I have made a habit of drinking some pretty punchy beers so 8% comes on the mellow side of things for me. Regardless, I tasted no astringency.

Mouthfeel: Clean, crisp, refreshing. I could drink a truckload of these on a hot summer day. The carbonation is spot-on. Not overdone, so you could really put these down before you became full.

Overall: I really enjoyed this. I will admit, I live about 10 minutes from the brewery, so pretty much anytime I grab a CS brew, it's pretty fresh. Being a local beer, however, I am not biased in any way. I've had a couple CS brews that have really disappointed me and let me down. Galactica is a near perfect beer. I've grown tired of IPA's recently, but I could revisit this one at any time and really enjoy it. (1,465 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a red wine glass. Bottled 6/02/14 (AKA 7 days ago). Big thanks to BA ClownShoesDreams!

Appearance: Moderate pour yields a 2 inch frothy offwhite head with great retention. Pours a semitranslucent copper and leaves tight lacing.

Smell: Starts out very tropical fruit and tangeriney, with sweet malty undercurrents (malty as in "malt sweetness"; not bready or anything distinct like that) and some of that earthiness of other New Zealand hops. With time it gets profoundly herbal, like Perle hops on steroids (I hate to use "on steroids," but this is a beer review not a novel)--minty, earthy, and REALLY strong. As the beer warms up more, the previous aromas transform into powerful dank, weedy hop aroma.

Really exceptional nose on this beer; exemplifies why you need to chase down IPAs super fresh. The hop aroma is so profound that it bounces from savory and vegetal to citrus tinged strawberry and tropical fruit. A bit of a hop catalog happening here, like the best IPAs.

Taste: All the hops from the nose up front, leading to a surprisingly well-held up malt backbone; cereal grain and crystal malt flavor. Tangerine and weed up front; as mentioned in other reviews, I love the flavor combination of that kind of hop flavor and fresh cereal grain malt. The crystal malt flavor brings a sweetness that I normally find unwelcome, but it transitions to a sort of biscuity toasted malt flavor that brings out the spiciness of the hops. Relatedly, I'd usually want a bone dry finish, but the somewhat softer, less-attenuated finish just provides some prolonged enjoyment of the great malt backbone.

The hop flavor isn't as multifaceted as the aroma, but it kind of doesn't need to be. When the glass is in front of me, I'm taking in all that amazing aroma with every sip, and the dank, earthy, straightforward, slightly pine-tinged oily hop punch in the flavor serves as an exclamation point to it. Then it's a long malty finish that should satisfy any beer lover.

Additionally, at 8% the alcohol is maybe a bit TOO well hidden. This is so easy drinking that I could imagine a 4pack getting me into some trouble.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Low side of moderately carbonated, which is actually ample. Slight dryness in the finish but not much.

Overall: Fresh Galactica is a "wow" beer. That big, insistent marijuana and tangerine note in the aroma and flavor is enough to make me love the beer, and the not-so-trendy choice of having some sweetness and biscuity malt to counterbalance the monster hops makes it all the better.

I feel like I'm repeating myself, but Clown Shoes just keep putting out well-thought out beer after well-thought out beer. If you see fresh Galactica, don't sleep on it.

P.S. Shout out to Racetrack in Battestar Galactica, whose dispassionate performance implies that she's intimately familiar with at least one of the things this beer smells like. (2,911 characters)

Had 20 oz. of this bad boy on tap at The BBC in Norwood, MA. It's my first Clown Shoes experience and I liked it a lot.

First, it looked great. It was a nice amber color with a bit of a haze and very alive. The smell made me dive right in. Like all best from my favorites in one glass.

But when it comes down to it I'm a taste and mouth feel guy. I need my taste buds to do a dance when they are introduced to a new brew and I wasn't let down. The other thing that will drive me away from a brew is a watery mouth feel but this offering has nothing to fear.

I really enjoyed it and will be on the hunt for their other selections. (632 characters)

One of the better IPA's out there. Unfortunately, not many of these (or any Clown Shoes) around me in New Jersey. The first thing I noticed was the smell - sort of a sweet organic scent on top of the "IPA" smell. Looks to me like there is some sediment turning with the carbonation. Middle of the road in terms of lightness and darkness for color. Taste and aftertaste are relatively similar. Definitely a good beer, and one that I can have at least 3 of before getting tired of. Will buy again. (495 characters)

Lovely, peach colored, body had a a little bit of haze when poured, and the two fingered head looked well proportioned atop it. Before bringing the pint glass up to my nose, I could already smell the hops. The aroma was very citric and piney as well. There was a ton of grapefruit on the nose. The taste was also emphasizing citric and tropical, rather than bitter, flavors, with some tangerine, grapefruit, and some guava and passion fruit. The finish was drawn out and drying. The beer was little thinner than typical for the style. I liked this one for being a bit different than typical a DIPA. (598 characters)

12oz bottle from Hop City (Atlanta, GA). 9.99/ 4-pack. Bottled 4/12/13. Served in a Burnt Hickory snifter.

Pours clear amber orange with a half finger cap of pale head that fades to a hazy layer, leaving nice little lace splotches.

Smells of fruity, floral and piney hops. Sweet mango, pine, orange, flowers and caramel.

Taste is a nice blend of mango, orange, citrus rind, sweet bread, earthy floral, an almost rye spice, caramel and biscuit. No alcohol heat at all and this goes down very easily.

Slick, medium feel with moderate carbonation. Long, dry, semi bitter orangey aftertaste.

A seriously tasty IPA from Clown Shoes. This is by far my favorite IPA I've had from them. Great balance of smooth sweet malts and bitter fruity hops. I will most certainly be buying more if this. (794 characters)

Coppery look, check. I like the metallic appearance. Filmy top foam settles in. Holds its mouth well. I sensed more of the northern pinewood than the citrus. This was no let-down brew. Paired with some great creole and it rounded the meal perfectly. Put my hop radar in full tilt by the end. (291 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours a very hazy copper amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of off white head with good retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing.

Smell: A very hop forward aroma with big esters of tropical citrus fruits and grass. Upfront hops with earthy and floral hints of grass. Big citrus presence with hints of mango, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, pineapple, passion fruit, guava, apricot, melon, and lemon. Also some hints of piney hops. Malt hints of biscuit, grains, caramel, yeast, and cracker. A very solid tropical hoppy aroma.

Taste: Follows the nose, a big taste of tropical citrus fruits along with a solid malt backing. Big hops upfront with lots of citrus fruit notes including mango, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, passion fruit, pineapple, apricot, guava, lemon, and melon. Earthy and floral hop notes along with some grass and pine resin spice. Soft bready malt balance with notes of biscuit, grains, cracker, caramel, and yeast. A really good juicy and smooth taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and juicy with a fairly drying finish. Alcohol is hidden very well.

Overall: A really solid IPA. My first taste of this hop and I'm loving it. Very good citrus flavor. (1,332 characters)

On-tap at Union Brew House in Weymouth, MA.

A: Copper in color with an amber hue. Creamy, thick, off white head. Light lace and retention.

S: Huge hops. Resin, pine, sap, evergreen, fresh cedar.

T: Delicious hop profile supported by a solid malt backbone. This one isn't hiding the hops. Very one sided. For the hop head. But fresh and tasty.

M: Sharp, bitter, fresh, resiny, heavily hopped, and properly carbonated.

O: I thought Clown Shoes fell off. Hadn't heard from them in a while. This is a very impressive beer to put them back on my map. Although...it is a relatively easy style to do well. Just kidding. (617 characters)
