I don't see a date but this was just released.
A: Pours a pitch black with a big dense medium brown head. Head fades out slowly, leaving pretty substantial and heavy lacework behind. Nice retention too with a mini island floating around.
S: Big bourbon notes. Burnt sugars and caramel abound. Marshmallow and just a hint of toasted coconut. Mild roasted malt pokes through with some sweet chocolate, but the barrel dominates here. Not too boozy or anything, just heavy and sweet bourbon notes. It reminds me a lot of a FiftyFifty Eclipse variant in fact.
T: Again with the bourbon but not as strong as the aroma. Heavy toasted marshmallow, caramel and decadent chocolate. Rich and heavy flavors. Smooth chocolate with just a hint of coffee in the finish. A little charred oak and lots of bittersweet chocolate lingers between sips. Wonderful, like a bourbon brownie masterpiece.
M: Heavy, smooth and viscous.
O: Wow, seriously good. Clown Shoes' best beer to date...by far. It really does remind me a lot of the FiftyFifty Eclipse series. Very similar. Probably the Bernheim one comes the closest. Very rich, decadent, sweet and smooth. Drinks wonderfully. No booze at all for 11.5%. Barrel character adds tons of complexity but does not overpower, just melds perfectly. It's like a half priced Eclipse basically. I don't know who would buy anything from FiftyFifty if this were readily available from them, that's for sure. Great job, Clown Shoes.

Pours dark black with a 1/2 finger creamy tan head, which quickly fades to a small disc of foam, and leaves spotty lacing. Nice aroma with chocolate, cocoa, bourbon, and dark roasted malt.
Tastes sweet with chocolate, cocoa, bourbon, dark roasted malt, smoke, and vanilla. The dark roasted malt provides some bitterness for balance. The alcohol is well disguised for 11.50 % abv. This is a nice sipper.
Full bodied with modest carbonation. Has a chocolate syrup aftertaste with a hint of Bourbon. Nothing wrong with this beer at all. Very nicely made.

Drank from a 1 pint, 6 fl. oz. bottle purchased at Cambridge Wine & Spirits, Cambridge, MA
Bottled on 07/18/13
Served in a snifter
Thick and oily, near pitch black appearance. The liquid was topped by a tight, creamy, bubbly, one-finger crown of tan colored foam. Spotty, drippy lacing coated the glass and lasted long after the beer was finished. The head eventually faded to a lasting cap of froth.
The aroma was rich and robust. Quite sweet with chocolate fudge notes coming through strong. Lots of bourbon and brown sugar. Oaky. Intense dark fruit notes appeared as well. Raisins and plums were most noticeable.
The flavor profile was tasty but rather harsh. Roasted malts came through strong on the front end. Hefty dose of char. Good amount of brown sugar-like sweetness. Fruity with notes of raisins and prunes. Hints of espresso and smoke appeared in the center. The finish was really hot and bitter. Between the boozy, whiskey-like notes and the copious amounts of piney hops, finishing my glass was a bit of a chore.
The mouthfeel was much thinner than I anticipated for a beer of this magnitude, but nevertheless creamy and smooth. Frothy and supple on the palate.
I love supporting local breweries, but I am consistently disappointed by Clown Shoes's "big beer" releases. Most are overly boozy, astringently roasty and far too thin in body. Why they continue to get such solid reviews is baffling.
