Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Served a dark brown color some tints of red and almost no head. Upon swirling there was very little lacing..

Smell – Sour notes of cherry and some notes of other dark fruit aromas of red grape and fig. Mixed with these aromas were some lighter notes of a light oaky note.

Taste – The taste starts out sour and gets even more sour as the taste advances. It begins with cherry and some other sweeter fruit flavors of prune and apple. These flavors bitter and sour more as the taste advances with a more vinegary flavor that enters the profile. In the end some oak flavor meets the bitter and sour flavors to leave a somewhat unpleasant burn on the tongue.

Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is on the light to medium side with the carbonation level rather average.

Overall – While it has some nice aromas and fruit flavors upfront, the very vinegary flavors sort of turn me off (this is not really my style of beer; so if you like sours it has some nice characteristics, but if you don’t like sours then….)

33 cl bottle,

A: Pours a beautiful dark crimson into a flute glass with a colour that thins out to the bottom into more of mahogany. Long lasting off-white head with good lacing.

S: Definite wood character, cheesy funk, sugar syrup.

T: Quite sugary, it has good oak notes and barrel character. Funk is interesting, but too much at times, definitely has a ton of Brett in it. Very low in acidity for the style, more like a Belgian dark.

M: I miss the sourness of a more traditional Flanders Red, sweet finish, quite sugary. Relatively light-bodied.

D: Certainly a different take on the style than the more lactic character in something like Rodenbach. An interesting experience, I think any sour fan should try it out.

Appearance- Pours a murky reddish brown. If you've ever donated plasma it's like a darker version of that.

Smell- Read some reviews after purchasing and wasn't thrilled but my first thought when I poured the glass was "maybe they are wrong.". Smells tart and funky wih some green apple coming out.

Taste- Starts fairly tart but it is overtaken by a artifcial rotten apple note. Not sure if this is an old bottle because it just tastes kind of stale.

Mouthfeel- Medium body with a decent amout of carbonation on the finish. Probably the highlight of this beer. If only I could drink it without tasting it. (ok that's an exaggeration but still)

Overall- I had never seen this on the shelf before and I'll never pass up the chance to try a new Flanders. I think I paid $6 for this bottle and it definetly wasn't worth that. If you literally had no other sour options fine but it is the definition of mediocre.

app: looks more brown than red.. not great lookin.

smell: mild pepper some nice tart zing w/ a little bit of brown gravy.

taste: odd. some sort of chemical after taste. some sour, lots of thick almost blonde malts

mf: little to thick, needs more bubles.

drinkable?: needs more zing, its nice but it needs more sour power.

Appearance - Dark burgundy/brown. Cloudy and unfiltered, with minimal head that clings to the side of the glass.

Smell - Oh yum sours. Tart apple, cherries, grapes... degree of funkiness and woodiness.

Taste - Sweet and tart at the beginning. Some hints of fruits (see above). Honestly a bit muted and kind of a disappointment. Not really sour - definitely reminds me of New Belgium's Vrienden. Perhaps a bit of that hibiscus flavor creeps in and is similar to the apple tartness.

Mouthfeel - Not substantial, minimal carbonation. Kind of want more body for something like this. Definitely not puckering or full.

Drinkability - Pretty high. Easy drinking with sweet flavors without being cloying. Lacking a little of that sour punch that I was looking for.

Not a fantastic Flanders Red but not awful either.... pretty mediocre.

I really like Flemish Sours, but this one tends to miss the mark somewhat. Pours to a dark brown, with some carbonation, but little or no head or lacing. The nose is muted sour fruit, with a hint of alcohol as the beer warms. While the mouthfeel tries, it is a junior version of the strong bittersweet feel of better FS's. The flavor is again sour fruit, but the finish is somewhat sour, somewhat stale, and definitely not up to Flemish Sour standards.

Nothing special about this, and I think I'll stick with the Duchesse.

A pretty vigorous pour delivers a thin creamy head atop a deep burned mahogany color. Pretty dense lacing results.

Some very faint tartness in the nose with some light vinegar notes. Some grape and green apple come through with very distant cranberry flavors.

Aside from some lactic acid on the finish, very subtle, almost muted, tartness throughout. Strong wood flavors along with a slight resiny finish along with a touch of charcoal. Don't really pick up on any of the cherries or dark fruit mentioned below, nor any fruit complexity. Also, the finish is surprisingly not dry.

Similar mouth-coating that accompanies most sours without the expected puckering. Density is relatively surprising and builds throughout.

Meh...enjoyable for what it offers; however, I probably won't go back to it.

Pours placidly into a fluted tulip glass, a finger of off-white foam appears when the glass is turned from 45º to 90º. In the candlelight, the bowl of the glass glows a deep ruby. Tiny carbonation is seen rising near the foam. Lacing is delicate and spindly, with a sticky edge where it meets the glass.

Musty hay aroma, very muted and bland at first. At room temperature when swirled vigorously, there was a hint of cherry yogurt.

Buttery taste (diacetyl?) leads into vanilla and light touches of oak. Low level tartness fights with the dry oak tannins, and ends up feeling muddled. Is it actually tart, or more of a bitter feel from the wood? Slight taste of cherry pit and skins as it warms up, but not well defined. With a bigger sip, the oak tannin seems more dominant. Nothing funky or wild about it.

Moderate level of carbonation, but it has a filmy slickness at the end that is distracting. Overall it's a little too dull to pique sustained interest. Worth trying but not a repeat buy. Rodenbach buries this by a landslide, Oud Bruin or not.

11.2oz poured into an Oerbier glass

a-Brilliantly clear ruby with a two finger eggshell head. Pleasant to look at. Head thins but lingers.

s-Malt vinegar and cherries. Slightly metalic. Some wood.

t-Sweet carmelly malt. Wood chips. Not very sour. I know the oud bruin isn't puckering but the balance is tilted way towards the sweet. Not much sour here. Almost like a brown ale aged in wood.

m- medium dry bodied. Not a ton of carbonation, which might help cut the sweetness a little

d- If this was a little less sweet, and/or was a bit more sour this would be better. The sweetness lingers on the palate a bit too long.

Poured a murky reddish brown with a thin head. Sweet fruity aromas followed by a dose of lightly acetic sourness. More sweeet than sour, but only slightly. There is also a slight vegetal aroma and some dusty smelling fruit. The taste is a little light, and once again more on the sweet than the sour side. Still, none of the unpleasant vegetal odors manifest in th taste at all. Mouthfeel is very fizzy, a little too much so. Overall, this beer is a little too sweet for the style for my taste and a bit out of balance. Not bad, but there are a number of better options.

Bears more than a passing resemblance to Ichtegem's Oud Bruin from the same brewery, if a little less sweet.

It's an attractive darkish brown with a nice off-white head. The smell is kind of musty and attractive, but the taste is a little thin and overly sweet. There's not much in the way of sourness/tartness. There's a bit of mustiness/wood in the taste, though not as much as in the smell.

It's quite drinkable and not at all unpleasant, but a little underwhelming. If you're looking for sour/tart, go elsewhere.

A - Deep reddish brown with little head.

S - Sour and slightly acidic, wet oak, cherry yogurt?, maybe a touch of spice.

T - Wet oak, vanilla, slightly spicy with tart cherry. The oaky tannins linger on the tongue.

M - Medium body leaving a slick, dry coating in the mouth. After several sips I feel as if I have been sucking on wet oak chips that have gone dry and are leaving a strange oaky film coating my mouth.

D - Slight promise in appearance and smell but all down hill from there.

A- Very dark red color with a thin white head.

S- Very sour nose and a touch of malt in there as well

T- Some malt some sour some dryness and no aftertaste it's nice but the whole taste is rather fleeting, interesting.

M- Slightly too thin a bit more body would help.

D- Nice easy to drink. Not a good beer to start some one with this style with but a nice version of it. Worth a try if you see it.

A - poured into a tulip. Dark copper, very reddish when reflecting any amount of light. Fairly opaque but not hazy (no obvious bubbles or sediment in the way, just...hazy). Small head disappears quickly but leaves a little lacing.

S - balsamic vinegar, dark cherry, prune...yet a little bit of sweet caramel too

T - nicely tart up front but lacks backbone and/or auxiliary flavors

M - light body, not much in the way of carbonated zing either. Needs one or the other to bring it back to life.

D - decent sour. not interesting enough to pay import pricing.

A--Dark, opaque brown with magenta hues. Minimal head. No lacing.

S--Dark overripe cherries, with an odd hint of grapes. Like Bubble Yum grape, not Bordeaux grape. Odd.

T--Like it smells, sadly, with a funky back end. There's a musty, attic-like quality on the finish. Not bad, really, but not great.

M--Merely average.

D--Okay. I mean, I wouldn't turn it down at a party, but this is far from the best I've had in this style. A bit of a disappointment.

Sampled February 2010
A solid pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces an almost three-finger thick, lightly amber tinged, light tan colored head. The beer is a dark, almost burnt, amber color that shows a fairly clear, deep red hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells lightly tart, faintly of balsamic vinegar, has a touch of fermented plum sauce, a solid but subtle cherry like fruitiness, some rhubarb aromas and maybe even a hint of nail polish.

Quite a bit sweeter than I was expecting, though not as sweet as the Duchesse, and there is only a touch of tartness to the flavor. The sweetness definitely begs for more balancing sourness, at least for this particular sour beer lover. This tastes quite a bit like cherries up front, but finishes with a rich maltiness that is laden with rich oxidized malt notes, toasted-brown-sugar crusted whole-grain bread and light sherry or even port like notes. Actually come to think of it, this really tastes like Concord grape juice, which I must say I am not the biggest fan of. There is perhaps a hint of spiciness towards the finish that suggests oak, but there is a certain roundness to the texture that suggests oak-derived tannins. The mix of tart and sweet, combines with the medium'ish body to make this fairly drinkable.

I shouldn't have expected too much for this beer, but somehow I feel a bit disappointed and cheated. This is certainly not horrible, but to my preferences it is not sour or tart enough and it could use a bit more malt richness too, hell even some rustic funkiness would be welcome.

330 mL bottle poured into an RR -tion glass. Best by 2015, I think, but it's smudged.

Appearance - Dark ruby brown body with an ample two-finger head of off-white foam. Excellent lacing. Really nice lacing.

Smell - Sweet malts and oak are most predominant. Hardly any tart aromas. Cherry, I suppose, but it's not a sour cherry.

Taste - Much more acidic than the aroma implies. Harsh acidic red wine vinegar. Oak all over, too. Finishes just a touch sweet.

Mouthfeel - Harsh on the palate. The flavors aren't bad, but the mouthfeel is unpleasant. Very acidic and vinegary. Highly carbonated.

Overall - It's harsh and too oaky. The flavors aren't inherently bad, but the feel just cancels out all benefits.

11.2oz bottle, picked up at State Line in Elkton. Date on cap says "08-2010", so i guess this bottle has another two years to go. Into my Defiant tulip

A: Pours a very deep red (almost reddish-brown) with a solid two-finger head. Holding it against a strong light reveals plenty of carbonation and a beer of considerable clarity.

S: Sour with some acetic notes with a pronounced oaky sweetness with plenty almost raw oaky vanilla character. The sweetness in this beer is very woody in nature and quite appealing. In the grander scheme of things, this one's among the less sour of the Flemish Reds but not everything can be a La Folie or Ommegang Rouge.

T: Starts off with a surprisingly sour character with some vinegar and oak and a palm sugar like sweetness. On swallowing, however, this beer becomes quite, uh, strange with some almost rotting meat-like flavor and a mildly tannic, dry finish.

M: Fairly light in body with pretty good carbonation and a nice dry finish (maybe a tad watery) but the strange flavor on the finish is off-putting.

D: This is fairly easy to drink, at least until you swallow this beer. I'm not sure I'll finish it, probably let it sit for an hour before i continue drinking

a - brown, slightly red. Very clear. No sediment, this doens't seem to be bottle conditioned.

s - smells of toast and mild wild funk. Caramel malt in there too.

t - sweet malt with a hint of sour and tang. Winey, red wine but no tannins.

m - lots of CO2. Not much else to say.

d - easy, but not what I expected.

This seems like a very simple beer, only very slightly tart/tangy and not much complex sourness or funkyness. Very drinkable.

Picked up at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido on the way back from my wedding in San Diego. Bottle shows a best before date of 03-2013. Served at 45°F in engraved champagne flutes we received as a gift at our reception.

Pours a dark ruby brown with a finger-thick creamy light tan head. Lots and lots of chunky thick lacing remain as I sip this one down.

Nose is rather subdued... there's a lot going on, but nothing that really screams out for attention. Most apparent is tangy dark cherries and the expected notes of red wine vinegar. Hints of oak and caramel round things out. Alcohol is apparent, which leads me to believe ABV is on the higher end of the scale for Flanders reds.

First taste is promising, with tart cherries, red wine, and an oaky finish, but it quickly fizzles, proving to be a rather one-dimensional example of the style. Savor this one quickly, as any flavor the tongue picks up disappears quick. Mrs. ThirdLap (who is a fan of the style) could not finish her glass, complaining of an off-flavor that reminded her of beers that have been improperly stored... however I'm fairly certain that's not the case with this bottle.

Body is rather thin and watery, with carbonation on the medium-high end of the scale. Alcohol is more noticeable than expected.

I found myself losing interest after the first few sips, knocking a few points off drinkability. It's an easy-drinking beer, but you simply find yourself bored with it very quickly.

A-Pours deep brown with ruby highlights and a fluffy 1.5 inch head. Leaves moderate soapy lacing.

S-Sauerkraut! Makes me want a hot dog. Some light lactic acidity.

T/M-Soft, nutty. Not very sour. Just a hint of cherry sweetness, low carbonation.

D-I could see this being a good gateway Flanders Red, but certainy not a great representation of the style.

-the color is a cloudy, deep brown with a reddish accent. a light tan head rises nicely during the pour and then settles out to a thin sheet

-there is definitely a vinegary smell to it, like a balsamic. there is a hint sour smell as well. a bit of a malt sniff in the back as well

-on the front of the sip there is sourness on the front of the tongue with the vinegar taste lingering in the back of the tongue. that taste melts into a fruity, sweet tart style candy taste (aka an artificial candy fruit taste). the finish leaves a weird, kind of rooty taste in my mouth. plus points for a nice transformation of flavors, neg. points for the finish

-there is a sharp carb bite which is weird because it also feels a bit flat somehow. it leaves kind of a burny back of the throat as well

-not necessarily a big fan of this beer. with that being said, the front end taste of the beer i didn't mind. glad i tried it, but that's probably it

Served with very little head and no lace. Color is a dark, cloudy brown with some reddish highlights. Maybe a little light struck: some burnt rubber/skunk. Flavor's not quite as skunky as aroma and I get some of the nice tart malt with fruit in the background. Had another bottle of this here recently and it was much better - no skunk. Good mouth and carbonation. Skunk's gone at the end. Good finish. No sense of the alcohol at all. I'd try another

Poured into a Goose Island stemmed glass a deep mahogany/red with a finger of lightly laced head.

Lightly tart nose, cherries, apple vinegar, red wine?

A sip is sweeter cherry/grape to start, then turns to a sour vinegar, slightly grassy. Medium to lighter body with nice carbonation.

Pretty solid, nothing jumping out at me. Good level of sourness, though a little vegative mid sip.

Poured into flute glass.

A: Very dark copper color, big foamy light tan head.

S: Sweet malt, mild vinegar sourness, hints of tart cherries. Not impressive for the style.

T: Mild tartness, cherries, dark malt.

M: Bright foamy carbonation, light-medium body that seems a little chewy at times.

O: Kind of a let down, this was not nearly sour or tart enough to satisfy that sour-ale addiction. Not a bad beer, but it's not the mouth watering sour ale that I (and many others) crave from this style.
