The colour is deep wine-red with a tint of brown. The very high foam is pale brown with a paler edge. It sinks slowly into a two finger firm compact uneven head, leaving some lacing.

The smell is tart with lots of red wine-like flavours. Some vinegar, some dried fruits. Hints of raisins, yeast and a fragile touch of oak wood.

The taste is first a bit fruity and sweet, but those notes are quickly replaced with cask matured tart flavours of cherries, sweet fruit candy, hints of red vinegar and minerals. The aftertaste got very mild earthy/yeasty flavours, some quickly passing alcohol and a long lasting dry taste of fresh cherries.

The carbonation is strong, but a the same time light and highly refreshing; lots of large bubbles. The liquid is smooth and light to the tongue.

This beer might not be the most complex in its style, but it is a very refreshing and highly drinkable beer. I enjoyed it.

Hazy red colour with a small, light tan head. Disappointing but still acceptable.

Moderate tart, funky aroma. Slightly fruity with the cherry pie notes I like in a Flander's Red. Decent.

The flavour disappoints as it is a touch too sweet and lacks the tart, funky kick of, say, Rodenbach. There is some background fruitiness and a hint of tartness.

Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Good.

A middle of the road Flander's Red. The punchy flavours of Rodenbach Grand Cru are not to be found but the overall flavour is okay.

11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip. Thanks to JAHMUR for this extra! Best by 04-05-2016.

(A)- Pours a dark mahogany color. Produced a large frothy/fluffy tan colored head. Great retention and tons of lace all over.

(S)- A deep bready yeast full with bits of cherry and a thick woody oak. Tiny hints at a barnyard-like funk/vinegar.

(T)- Mildly tart. Some vinegar notes with cherry, sharp oak, and a mildly yeasty but bitter finish. Thin.

(M)- A mellow carbonation level. A surprisingly thin mouthfeel overall despite the thick head and robust/complex aroma. Rather mild as well overall.

(D)- A solid flanders. The taste and feel were a bit of a letdown when the appearance and smell were great, but this is still quite and enjoyable beer nonetheless.

Got this on-tap from BSP in Atlanta.

Pours a clear dark ruby color with a one-finger white head that seems to have an orange tint. The head recedes into a thin layer of bubbles on top and a medium-sized ring around the glass. There's not much lacing.

Smells good. There's a good fruity aroma, lots of berries. There are also slight tart and earthy smells.

Tastes good as well. Lots of sweet fruit flavors up front that are followed by a good amount of sourness and a dry finish. There's a mild oak flavor that pokes through every now and then as well.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a good thickness to go with lively carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I had no problem finishing this glass and would've gladly had another.

Overall I was impressed. I'm just now getting into sours, but I was a fan of the way none of the flavors were too overpowering in this beer. Certainly worth a shot.

33cl bottle into my Rodenbach Grand Cru tulip...Pours a murky brown with light red highlights, a light tan head rises about a one finger gone quickly to a whispy covering...The aroma is light but brings about some nice flemish red characteristics of some nice balsamic vinegar, light oak, both in a sweet way, a much lighter but similar smell to the Rodenbach Grand Cru...The taste is decent, not as good as the aroma as most of the vinegar fades and you get mostly a lot of oak. Light candy sugar too, the lack of vinegar disappoints...The feel is on the lighter side, decent to drink.

This is an above average flemish fed, worth trying to get different taste than the top two in this style but clearly a notch below.

On tap at Victoire in Rochester, NY.

Pours a dark blood-red, slightly hazy, with no head, and only a little bit of lacing.

Smells like sour cherries, green apple, vinegar, and lactic acid.

The taste is similar. Fairly sweet with cherry flavor up front, almost like slightly less sweet maraschino cherry juice, some acidity washes over the palate, along with similar sour cherry tastes.

Light to medium bodied, medium carbonation. Fairly easy to drink. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel.

This was a pretty good Oud Bruin. It's probably a little sweeter than typical, but that's ok with me.

11.2oz bottle, picked up at State Line in Elkton. Date on cap says "08-2010", so i guess this bottle has another two years to go. Into my Defiant tulip

A: Pours a very deep red (almost reddish-brown) with a solid two-finger head. Holding it against a strong light reveals plenty of carbonation and a beer of considerable clarity.

S: Sour with some acetic notes with a pronounced oaky sweetness with plenty almost raw oaky vanilla character. The sweetness in this beer is very woody in nature and quite appealing. In the grander scheme of things, this one's among the less sour of the Flemish Reds but not everything can be a La Folie or Ommegang Rouge.

T: Starts off with a surprisingly sour character with some vinegar and oak and a palm sugar like sweetness. On swallowing, however, this beer becomes quite, uh, strange with some almost rotting meat-like flavor and a mildly tannic, dry finish.

M: Fairly light in body with pretty good carbonation and a nice dry finish (maybe a tad watery) but the strange flavor on the finish is off-putting.

D: This is fairly easy to drink, at least until you swallow this beer. I'm not sure I'll finish it, probably let it sit for an hour before i continue drinking

Bottle at Josie Bones. From notes.

A - Poured murky brown with a red tint. One finger of beige head. Nice drapes of lace and a film of retention.

S - Nice woody notes. Rich fruits and spirits. Cherry, dark fruit and sweet fruits.

T - Less dark fruit, more tart woodiness. Mellowed later with a sweetness. Woody, tart, and sweet all at once.

M - Good carbonation, medium body, frothy in the mouth, tart finish.

O/D - Nice. Enjoyed it as it captured the flavours I was expecting properly and fit the style. Balanced accordingly. Nice stuff.

Served in the Strubbe's tall Ichtegem tulip, Ichtegem's Grand Cru is a chill hazed dull brown head that leaves scattered foam. The featured brewery of the month at La Trappe in San Francisco, it's a brewery I've always wanted to try but have never been seen available in Oregon (or PA, where I used to live).

Smell is maltly, coconut, slightly acidic, vinous. Unmistakably Flanders Red. A little subdued, but it was very nice, and the more I savored the bottle, the more I appreciated the aroma.

Taste is pretty smooth for the style, with very little tartness. Oaky and vinous, some coconut and vanilla notes, light solvents, hints of red wine vinegar. Clean overall, a great crossover beer for red wine drinkers that would be turned off by increased sourness.

Mouthfeel is dry and slick, medium light body, there's a bit of a dry chalkiness as well.

Drinkability is pretty good, but frankly I prefer more acidity. Just had Rodenbach's Grand Cru last night so I've got a very fresh impression for comparison, and prefer that for sure. Still it's not bad, exceptionally smooth.

Served with very little head and no lace. Color is a dark, cloudy brown with some reddish highlights. Maybe a little light struck: some burnt rubber/skunk. Flavor's not quite as skunky as aroma and I get some of the nice tart malt with fruit in the background. Had another bottle of this here recently and it was much better - no skunk. Good mouth and carbonation. Skunk's gone at the end. Good finish. No sense of the alcohol at all. I'd try another

Pours dark brown with a large fading head.
Nose shows berries, funk, acidity and a little sweet malt.
Flavours show loads more fruit, heaps of raspberries with some musty malt showing later alongside a little tart acidity.
Great moderately high carbonation creates a dry refreshing finish.

From a bottle at Jimmy`s in NYC.

Appearance is a burgundy color with fluffy looking white head. On the nose, there is cherry, wood and sourness. This one looks like it is going to be fairly sour. Upon sipping, sure enough that aspect was there, along with more of those cherries. Some Belgian candy and yeast was also part of the flavor. Mouthfeel on this one was dry, nice carbonation. Some of that tart quality sits on your palate for a bit. Certainly one, to have some water and/ crackers afterwords.

Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Served a dark brown color some tints of red and almost no head. Upon swirling there was very little lacing..

Smell – Sour notes of cherry and some notes of other dark fruit aromas of red grape and fig. Mixed with these aromas were some lighter notes of a light oaky note.

Taste – The taste starts out sour and gets even more sour as the taste advances. It begins with cherry and some other sweeter fruit flavors of prune and apple. These flavors bitter and sour more as the taste advances with a more vinegary flavor that enters the profile. In the end some oak flavor meets the bitter and sour flavors to leave a somewhat unpleasant burn on the tongue.

Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is on the light to medium side with the carbonation level rather average.

Overall – While it has some nice aromas and fruit flavors upfront, the very vinegary flavors sort of turn me off (this is not really my style of beer; so if you like sours it has some nice characteristics, but if you don’t like sours then….)

It's true that I need more experience with the style, but I think I know the guidelines, at least.

It's sort of a thick and hazy beer, and the color isn't so much a red-brown as brown-red. A big, fluffy off-qhite head stands for a good, long time, barely diminishing below two fingers for quite a while and remaining even as the beer is being drunk. It sticks around like a creamy pillow before eventually settling to a layer that deposits patchy lacing that continues to spread out in legging as it goes.
Tart and sour on the nose, this is a solid standard-setter as I understand it. Just a touch of vinegar-like funk is unoffensive and deep. Light alcohol notes just sneak out.
Plenty tart and sour, it's short of puckering but plenty flavorful. It's got lots of it, giving the impression of underripe fruits that have somehow full developed their flavor. A creamy sort of vanilla sweetness underlies it and balances very nicely. An easy sipper that's not too sour but doesn't stray, I could have several of these easily.
The body is light a fairly robust red wine with a light fizz to it. It's got a solid depth to it and flows very nicely. It has a pretty easy finish.

A sweet, pleasing Flanders Red. This beer pours a brownish red color with a better than expected off-white head. The aroma is sweet and sour cherries with a touch of malt. The flavor is similar with a medium-light vinegar kick. My score is dropping as I go through my glass, which is never a good sign. There's a somewhat cloying syrupy character to the beer. I'm not good enough at beer tasting to tell if it's back-sweetened, but it tastes that way to me. If this beer was bone dry, I'd like it a whole lot more. As is, the sweet cherry flavor is growing acrid on my palate. It's not a bad beer, but I prefer a bit less sweet in my sours.

Super-dark, brown with red tints if you hold it up to the light. It smells pretty good, like sour vinegar and then sweet. The taste is slightly sour, very easy to drink. This is not nearly as intense as some of the other flemish red's like La folie or La Roja. Thanks to RBlWthaCoz for this interesting brew.

Pours a purplish brown, like a prune. Nice head.

Smells smooth and oaken with just a tiny little hint of sour cherries and some more generic, smoother fruit, like blackberries.

Tastes like it smells. Very smooth and sweet for a Flanders--I split this with a friend as a way to preface drinking an Upland Gilgamesh, so he could see if he liked sour beers before I went and opened up an expensive bomber of a beer so tart it makes your cheeks burn. This--this was not a proper preface. Still, it was pretty darn good on its own.

Appearance. Pours a deep amber brown with over a finger of off white head that lasts a while and leaves some decent lace.

Smell. Cherries, fruity belgian yeast and spice, and a bit of dank old wood.

Taste. Sweet cherries, a small dash of raspberry vinegar, a little bit woody and a slight bitterness.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with medium, lively and fine carbonation. A little bit sticky.

Overall. A bit too sweet for me. Tasted good but I won't be in a hurry to drink it again.

Poured into a tulip. Dark reddish brown with a nice tan head that retains itself longer than you'd expect with the acidity of the beer. Aroma is cherries, prunes, wood. Flavor is mainly a slimy cherry cola sweetness with some weird grapes and wood. It's got some tartness and acidity but no complexity or body. Mouthfeel is too carbonated and thin. Not buying this again.

Murky brown color with reddish highlights, this beer has a thick, tan, small bubbled head. Lots of carbonation. The smell is of candy apple and earth. Musty, mixed with a tangy sweet scent. Lots of yeast scent as well. The taste is both sweet and sour, with a little slant to the tangy side. Not quite mouth puckering, but rather cleansing. Fuller in body than I expected. This is a nice beer, on style, and very approachable.

Pours a reddish brown with a very small head after a gentle pour. The head settles to a ring very quickly. Not much for lacing.

Smells of ripe fruit such as cherries, plums, and red grapes. Also some oak and vanilla is detected.

The taste is only slightly sour and most of the tartness comes on the finish. Very fruity which is countered by the vanilla flavor. Finishes dry and sour with an aftertaste that doesn't linger around.

Feels medium bodied with ample carbonation. An interesting beer that is worth a try.

A - pours a dark ruby red / reddish brown without much of a head

S - smells very winey with some malts and a touch of sweet vinegar

T / M - the taste is a mix of some faint caramel malts with a lot of vinous fruits - it is very wine-like in its taste. It has some nice carbonation and a good body; it leaves the palate with a tannin-eqsue dryness.

D - For this style, this is a very approachable and drinkable beer. If you have a wino friend that is looking for a beer, this is the one to give them.

33 cl bottle with no date. Served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

Muddy cherry cola brown body with ruby highlights. Frothy, rocky, lacy, dirty khaki head. Tart cherry leads the nose with balsamic vinegar, currants, licorice, shoe leather, and sugary cherry juice behind.

Earthy, mushy fruit malt up front. Metallic cherry tartness cuts in. Slightly sugary fruit malt in the background. Some oak and vanilla before tartness and balsamic vinegar take over. Lingering cherry tartness and faint sweetness. Fruit skins in the finish. Nice. Different. I need to start drinking more Flanders Red Ales!

Served in a tulip glass

A: Dark caramel color with very little head. Slightly translucent.

S: Very complex and highly aromatic. Sweet and sour. Notes of bubblegum, lemonheads candy, and wild yeasts.

T: Quite tangy and sour, but in a positive way. Reminiscent of a brash young red wine. Light maltiness on the front end with the acidic finish and taste of fruity red wine. As with the smell, the flavors demonstrated a good deal of complexity.

M: Clean, crisp, and acidic. Heavy carbonation.

D: I must admit, I am not familiar with this style of beer. I typically do not enjoy Belgian beers for their lactic sourness, but this beer was different. The sourness, and I use the word sour for lack of a better term, was akin to the sourness or acidity present in wine, was well balanced, and was in no ways distracting or offputting. This was a very good beer. It was a pleasure to drink and paired well with food. I could not see it being one I could drink repeatedly as the unique flavor profile could be fatiguing, but, otherwise, quite enjoyable.

This is a Flemish Red I missed at Sour Fest, but luckily stumbled upon at Capone's:

Pours a winey, blood red with thin acidic head and champagne-size carbonation.

Scent is ripe, sour and fruity, like a very tart sangria. A woody forest character brought on by the oak barrels is ever present.

Taste is subtly dry, well-mixed with an oak character and the sweetness of cherry and raspberry flavors. Ending is musky like a wine cellar, but a little understated compared to Rodenbach and the Duchesse.

Acidity tingles in the back of the throat, with a dry ending that resonates after the sip for a few seconds. Flavors aren't sour enough to limit drinkability, which makes this one go down pretty easily, especially with that nice oakey ending.

Although not a masterpiece, this isn't a bad rendition and only suffers based on comparisons with other, more established brews.
