Carefully poured it's surprisingly clear, although there are flecks of yeast in suspension. The color is an appropriate reddish-brown with crimson highlights when held to the light. The thin, light tan head drops quickly to a modest collar, although it does leave some minor spotty lace throughout the glass. The aroma is quite vinous with some distinct lactic sourness. The flavor starts tart and sweet at the front of the tongue and becomes quite fruity (currant, black raspberry) as it warms. In the finish a dull bitterness lays at the back of the throat amongst fading sticky & sweetish malt.These bottles have been aged quite for a few years and they seem a bit smoother than I remember. Quite interesting with a good level of compexity and a refreshing character.

Served in a wine glass at Spuytin Duyvil in Brooklyn. Dark reddish brown pour with some nice burgundy red highlights. Very thin, white head that didn't stick around for long. To the unware, this looked just like a glass of wine. Strong dark fruit aroma with hints of balsamic vinegar. A little hint of a wine/oak aroma as well. This beer tastes almost exactly like it smells. Initially it was a pleasant sour vinegar flavor with some nice dark grape flavors. After the initial blast of sour was a perfectly balanced oak wood flavor. Slightly sweet too. Sooo delicious. Sometimes I find wood flavors to be a little overwhelming but this was great. Mouthfeel is very creamy and smooth with mild carbonation. Very drinkable as I had three of them that night.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter.

Dark brown with good radiant ruby tones when held to the light. Small tan light head that quickly fades into a thin covering. Little to medium lacing.

Smell: Yeasty funk at first with equal parts wood and cherry quickly joining the mix. Balsamic vinegar and onions join the party at the end.

Taste: Sour (what do you expect with a Flanders Red?). Starts off exactly like the smell. As the beer warmed up, coconut. A very foresty quality lingered with the coconut, making me think of a piny forest with with coconut trees. After the coconut, a good, aged balsamic vinegar taste lingered for minutes. Fried Chicken was the last progression of flavor. Lots going on with the beer.

Mouthfeel: Just a little too dry. Kind of made me pucker a little (and not from the sourness).

Drinkability: So much going on I didn't want to set the beer down.

A little gift I brought home for myself from Belgium...

A- Poured from the bottle with a thin, tan, diffuse head, over a semi-opaque dark brown body. No visible carbonation.

S- Smells of mild to moderate stewed malts with a husky overtone, with some lesser acetic and metallic nuances.

T- Malt character is strong and somewhat sweet up front... a touch of melanoidin is met with some mild acetic notes midway, which turn to a dryer echo of melanoidin, sherry, and mild huskiness in the finish. Quite tasty, and I suspect that the 1+ year of age on this bottle is helping it.

M- Thin body with a pervasive, moderately soft carbonation... has a light syrupy texture and a mild anstringency.

D- I can drink this stuff all night long- I guess another trip to Belgium is in order!

this ale poured like a red ale dark copper and had the same appearance as one..the smell was of earth, oak , and peat and fruits.. hard to describe the style.. the taste was very good it was earthy followed by an oak and yeast hit with some fruit and some clove tastes..this was not an overpowering ale but a nice easy drinking ale at a low abv..will buy again only comes in the 750ml bottle where i live. a great style to try buy it if you can find it

Presentation: 8.4 fluid ounce brown glass bottle. A purple colored crown cap and a single label are all that self promote this beer. The single brown and white label, hint at the beer style. Listed as “Ichtegem’s Ale” in old black Germanic font, with the intial ‘i’ in lower case & red. A small yellow colored coat of arms emblem and the words “Old Brown” and “Brewed in Flanders” complete the label. The obligatory Government Warning wastes more label space, whilst the strength is listed as 5% Alc/Vol in the bottom right hand corner. No freshness date. Research tells me that this is made with 20% aged ale.

Appearance: Extreme clarity surprises me. I was expecting a more hazy appearance. A lovely deep chestnut brown. One or two very small yeast particles do little to detract from the appearance. A thin collar comprised of large tan colored bubbles constantly surrounds the beers edge. No lacing.

Nose: A very sour nose with vinegar highlights. The sourness is very lactic in aroma and style.

Taste: A fruity sour beginning that is very sharp in character. Lactic sourness builds in the middle, with some malt sweetness in the end. The finish has a slightly bitter aspect with a cloying sweetness that thankfully does not stick around too long. Very fresh and quite thirst quenching.

Mouthfeel: Pretty solid and the changing flavor profile add some simple complexity to the overall mouthfeel.

Drinkability: Apart from the sticky sweetness in the ending, I found this to be a very passable attempt. I like Flemish Red/Browns and I often find them very drinkable - this was no exception. I would like to try an older version that has less residual sweetness in the ending though.

Overall: A reasonable effort at a Flanders Old Brown, and although it is made from 20% aged ale, it is still a tad too sweet for my liking. Maybe placing this in a dark cupboard for a year would lessen the sweetness a tad. If it did, it would improve the beer immensely. Still, it is a very nice example of a Flemish old Red/Brown that I would like to drink again if I get the chance.

This is only my second sour Oud Bruin, so I am fairly new to the style. The smell was a little "off putting" in the beginning, but as the beer warmed, it started to smell like sour candy and ripe citrus fruits. The taste was a bit similar, but more on the sour candy. It also had a nice warming feel as it went down the throat. This is one of those beers that the alcohol isn't very strong in it, but you would guess it's much higher than it is. I hope I can find more of these styles of beers around Charleston. I really want to start trying more of these.

First of this style and must say was pleasantly surprised.

Very dark reddish coloring with tan head. Hard to describe since it was unexpected not knowing much about this beer style. Fruity undertones, is it wine no, but fruity like some wines and carbonation just right for a beer. would love to know more about this style so I describe better.

Mouth feel was very warm and inviting not light or heavy.

I am not sure how many of these I could drink but one or two would do the trick...

Poured into snifter.

Pours 1/2 finger of off white head. Fades to a ring. Leaves splattered lace. Color is a dark chocolate brown.

Aroma: Lots of dry cherries. Slight oak. A very malty beer. Not to much going on here. It is a little tart.

Taste: Reminds me sort of like a brown ale with some oak and cherry flavors. Malt based with some dry spice notes. Again, not much going on here, but I dig it.

Mouthfeel: A little tart, but overall just smooth. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends slight dry, but pretty clean.

Overall, I don't mind this, but I wish this was more sour and more oak was present. It started out drinking slow, but as I worked my way through the bottle, it got a little better.

On-tap at Hopleaf, served in a tulip.

Deep brownish tone with a ruby glint in the light. Ample head of khaki foam, with irregular tendrils of lace on the sides. Decent head retention, better than average for the style.

Aroma of lactic funk and light woody undertones, with a hint of berry. Swirling intensified the funkiness, but it never became overbearing.

Flavors of mild oak barrel, with tartness on the tongue, not too intense really. Some dried berry flavor midway through, and some barley flavor too. A dry finish, that seems to thin out as it sits on the palate.

More or less a standard Oud Bruin, not too out of the box, but fairly enjoyable.

At 5.5%abv., BB 03/2009, tasted just cool in a slim goblet.

A: dark chestnut brown in colour with very strong red glows when seen against light, coming with some, not much, yeast sediments; the carbonation is mild and moderate, while the beige beer head breaks down fast to a rim.
S: there's more aroma than my last bottle of Oud Bruin "Bockor Bellegems Bruin", featuring grassy hops, sour plum jam, raisins, metallic sour prunes and semi-sweet red grape skins... but overall the typical pungent lactic sourness of a barrel-aged ale is slightly in the lacking, or, very delicate. Given a swirl, a familiar aroma of very dark malts with an edge of melted black-sugar emerges and mixes with the fruity theme in a harmony. Overall, very pleasant, richly fruity with a whiff of good maltiness, but way less lactic-sour than one'd normally expect from this style.
T: the softly effervescent foretaste is just mildly sour-sweet, showing a decent composition of smashed dark fruits (longan-fruits and sweetened dried plum-flesh) and fast developing herbally-malty taste with a "settled" edge of light-bodied dark malts (like what's used in a Dark Mild), licorice candy, and lightly grassy hops. The finish is semi-chewy, concluding the overall fruity and lightly malty theme in an interestingly contrasting manner.
M&D: very smooth, the soft carbonation lasts throughout the drink against a medium-plus body. This Oud Bruin is not quite stale like any well-aged ale or lactic/sour-fruity as my last bottle, "Bockor Bellegems Bruin", but is deliciously fruity and still balanced with a pretty good dose of malts - overall, simply easy-drinking~~

Bottle at Strijdershuis in Bruges, as we drank our way through the Strubbe range.
A: Dark maroon and brown with a big fluffy white head that settles slowly to leave a delicate lacing.
S: Aroma of dark fruit and roasted malts.
T: Flavors of light smoke and toffee with sourness from the middle to the finish.
M: Decent enough body.
D: Good example of the style, pleasant and drinkable.

Ichetegem's Oud Bruin pours a finger of tan foam over a deeply
coffee-coloerd brew- not quite opaque it reveals a rosyness held
up to the light. Carbonation is steady, and the nose is dark toasty
malts and an oaky vinous funkiness. The flavor is warmly toasty
with a bit of hop and wine-like tartness for balance. There are spicy
Belgian yeast ester notes as well- a mere ghost of a suggestion of
clove is in the mix. The mouthfeel is light, smooth and dry. This is an
interesting style- definitely a beer but with many wine-like characteristics
as well- extremely drinkable and flexible too- with all the strengths of
beer and wine and none of the weaknesses. This beer would pair up
nicely with just about everything except desserts.

Had this beer at Monk's Cafe on Sunday as part of the Michael Jackson Flemish Sour dinner. This was beer # 2. The beer poured a deep brown color into a wine glass. There was a slight tan head that ran away rather quickly. The aroma of this good looking beer was sour and funk. The taste was a nice sweet sourness and a bit acidic. After a few more sips of this I get some raisin and malts but overall this a sour beer that is enjoyable.

A: Redbrown colour, big but thin head that dissapears rapidly but leaves enough lacing.

S: cherries, some citrus. But not a lot of aroma's are rising up.

T: Funky sourness at first, aftertaste is a weet bitterness that dissapears fast.

M/D: Very drinkable but a bit thin too my taste.

Overall not bad, but certainly not the best in the style.
