I have to say this was an excellent beer. I am not one for rating beers, but this brewery has taken their beers to the next level. I found this beer to be equal of Founders Breakfast Stout. I know for a fact that is saying a lot. If you are in Raleigh I would make sure to stop by this place. The stout is something not brewed like the others.

A very nice stout, with good taste but also easy to enjoy (not a stout that requires use of a spoon, but still one that has a feel to it). Nice, deep, color and a good, lively taste and smell. Also have to compliment the taproom and staff, who spent an extended period on a slow afternoon discussing brewing.

Smoky aroma has malty, yeasty and chocolate notes with a hint of licorice. It pours a deep chocolaty opaque brown with a fairly thick and fine-bubbled tan head. Flavor has smoky, coffee, licorice and caramel notes plus a pinch of hops and a whisper of fruit. Texture is a bit thin for a stout, but fairly fizzy and lively, leaving a nice smoky and tingly finish.

On-tap at the brewery's tap room served in a standard pint glass a deep opaque black with a thin diminishing head. Aroma is a nice amount of roasted malts. The taste is smooth roasted malts and a nice touch of bitter cocoa. The beer is on the heavy side of medium with mild carbonation. This is an enjoyable strong stout, one I would certainly have again.

Dark brown, near black, pour with mountainous 3+ fingers of very light head. Excellent lace and head retention, what with 3 fingers to work with

Chocolate and tobacco nose. Really more tobacco than anything else. Quite earthy.

Tobacco carries over into the taste. Very smoky. Notes of chocolate and coffee, but smoky tobacco dominates. Hides abv completely.

Lighter in body than expected for 7%+ beer.

My current favorite from Roth.

On tap at the brewery.

Pours a dark brown on the verge of black with head that lasts forever. Smells of roasted malt, coffee, and a hint of fruit though I can't pinpoint which fruit exactly. Taste is solid; coffee from the malts and a hint of chocolate with the undetermined fruit coming through ever so vaguely. Mouthfeel is a little light, but not in a bad way. Overall, I consider this to be one of the best that Roth has to offer.

22 oz

Pours jet black with a coarse coffee-and-cream head, dissipates slowly with some bubbles clinging to the glass.

Smells of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans, with some oak hints.

Tastes of bitter cocoa and roasted coffee with some minor coffee acidity and maybe a twinge of licorice.

Body on the fuller side, a bit viscous, with a soft carbonation.

A pretty good medium strength stout with a good body and an okay taste. Not much to complain about here. I've had better stouts, but I've had far worse too.

Pours a deep coal black color out of the growler. The head is a mocha thing, all kinds of thickness and staying power, and even when it lessens it remains a mostly-solid skim the whole time.

Not even sure how to score the aroma...it's fruity, mineral-laden, even a bit earthy/yeasty, but nothing I usually associate with this kind of stout. It does have a nice smoky layer happening, and it's surely hinting that maybe this is just going to be a unique type of stout...

Yeah, things balance out a bit in the flavor, bringing in juicy dark fruit (fig, raisin, grape), a gentle mineral bite, watery coffee, a light flash of chocolate, wood smoke (also light), and something slightly burnt. Nothing bad going on here, although I've had better foreign/export stouts I suppose.

Texturally this achieves a great balance between carbonation sizzle and velvety smoothness. I like when a stout of this kind does that, and Dark Construct does it very well.

My first and only Roth beer to date, but based on this, they're very welcome to the region. Will seek out more for sure...

I've been curious about this tiny newcomer to the Raleigh beer scene since the summer so when I saw a growler at Sam's today I decided to take the plunge. Pours a commendable pure jet black but is remarkably bald without even a hint of a head. The nose slowly improves as it warms but offers only faint roasted malt after about twelve minutes' wait.

An interesting first taste, with coffee and roasted tones taking the lions share of the carries but this is also more than moderately hopped and comes out remarkably balanced for a traditional export type stout. Light and smooth in texture and low in carbonation, this one really needs to warm to give you the full measure of what it has. This is the closest thing to a "summer stout" I've come across. Of course, it would be December with record cold at the moment. Alcohol is detectable but not obtrusive. Certainly commendable and worth trying, if not the revolution promised on the label. Would recommend.

22 oz. Large pressure release upon opening. Near black with gigantic tan head, even with a careful pour. Slightly concerning, but it's not like the bottle was a gusher or anything.

Aroma, heavy chocolates and roast malt. Fainter anise, mocha latte. Slight metallic tinge, this increases heavily as it sits.

Taste, Very pleasant, the metallic thing doesn't seem to be present. Mixing some nice roast malt with dark chocolate, mocha. There is a tobacco presence. Dryer coffee finish. Almost more of a slightly sweeter foreign stout than a slightly less sweet milk stout.

A little thinner bodied than I'd like, probably some result of the higher carbonation. Carbonation does not get in the way of drinkability though, drinks very easy. Abv a tick below "imperial" is not noticeable.

My first taste of another local NC brewery.Poured into a nonic a deep dark brown with ruby highlightd when held to the light,a 1/2 finger creamy beige head atop.Coffee and char really stood out aroma-wise,a bit of tobacco and licorice also showed thru.I tasted alot of tobacco and char at the onset and the tobacco flavors became even more bold as I drank more, light smokiness and char underneath with minimal sweetness.I havent had a stout with such pronounced tobacco-like flavors, this was pretty raw but not bad.

I really had high expectations of this beer after reading some of the reviews. I am under the impression that I either got a bad bottle or this beer is just terrible. I brought this to a beer tasting and ended up drain pouring the rest of the bottle after everyone had taken their share and either spit it out or swallowed and regretted doing so. I would say that the best part of this beer for me was the appearance and aroma...that's about it. It was over carbonated and an unbalanced mess from start to finish

Surprisingly forceful pop from the cap as the bottle opens. Black liquid pours into my glass, releasing a torrent of finely-bubbled brown head. Very little liquid settles in the glass initially; almost an 80/20 ratio of head to body lets me know something's wrong.

A quick whiff and a small taste confirm that it is, unfortunately, infected -- and not marginally so. Tart medicine roars to life, assuring me no traces of the roasty stout base remain. Ugh... I was really looking forward to this one too :(

I debated whether or not to review Dark Construct based on this bad bottle, but since none of the other reviews mentioned infections, I feel obligated to get the word out on this batch. I look forward to replacing this review if/when I can get my hands on a non-infected bottle.

I hope I just had a bottle from a bad batch, because this was the worst stout I have ever tasted. Distinctive medicinal aromas and an aftertaste that tasted like cigarette ashes. This must be a start-up brewery that can't afford to throw away a bad batch. Can't say that I would be willing to try this again. Just too bad of an experience.
