A recent visit to The Tractor Tavern for a concert left me needing a breath of fresh air. A walk up the Ballard strip, a lot of busy bars and restaurants, had me discovering this recently opened spot. A very attractive room offered a quiet spot for a pint. Nice wooden bar and tables. Some low tables and chairs. books and maps to peruse.
All draft beer is served in 20oz pints and the beer list on my visit included brews from: Hood Canal Brewery, Anchor, InBev, Rogue, Diamond Knot, Double Mountain, Fremont, Guiness, Laurelwood, Deschutes, Elysian, Terminal Gravity and Victory.
The bottle list had brews from: Chimay, Duvel, Franziskaner, Metolius, Green Flash, Rogue, Laughing Dog, Lazy Boy, Samuel Smith's Left Hand, Southern Tier and several others.
They also had a selection of ciders, both draft and bottle. A simple menu of small plates and deserts all sounded good, but we didn't try any. Overall, a very nice little pub. If it were local to me, I'd probably be a regular. As it is, I'll visit every time I'm in the neighborhood.

A: My kind of place! Walked in with BAs Lazerlobe and JackCrow, sat down at a stand alone table next to the window and admired the wooden decor which I thought was beautiful and cozy. Lights were dim, nice smooth, subtle ambiance perfect for drinking great beer on a cold night. Very laid back and unintrusive.
Q: Our beers were good. We scored some Double DBA and FW16 draft. Nothing wrong with that. All the beers were clean and delicous. Score.
S: Our server was cordial, prompt and informed. No major complaints or issues.
S: About 14 handles or so. They must have recently had a FW beer night because the the taps were sporting FW 16, Double DBA, Sucaba, Velvert Merlin ect. Loads of goodies.
F: No try
I would say that if I lived in Balard this would probably my local craft beer getaway. Highly recommended.

I feel like this place is more under-the-radar than other Seattle beer bars, but the taplist is consistently one of the best in the city. They always have a good mix of WA (Snipes, Port Townsend, Everybody's, etc) and other West Coast (usually an offering from Pizza Port, Old Rasputin, Double Mountain and a Deschutes special release) beers, and keep they styles varied. They also normally have 3 local ciders on tap.
Combine the consistently excellent taplist with two massive flat screen TVs and some charcuterie plates, and it's perfect to watch a big game without going to sports bar.

We all ate at The Walrus and the Carpenter down the street and then trekked it up to the Fir, stopping along the way on Ballard to peek at stores, bars, corners, things. A cool area, no doubt.
The Noble Fir is noble indeed, and classy and warm. Not a big space but well utilized, with some booths to the left as you enter, a main seating area with high-top tables and the bar. Super nice service! Truly outstanding. Guy comes to our table, greets us, offers recommendations, brings samples, smiles... the whole nine yards, and then some. I guess Seattle hipsters are not bred the same way as Brooklyn's.

Beautiful atmosphere, including a library with books to read while you're at a table. Lovely joint! (check out the sister bar, The Sixgill, on Fremont; it's even cooler)

Very cool place on the Ballard Strip.
Family owned with a strong emphasis on the outdoors. There is a whole corner of the space dedicated to maps and travel books. The mens room has a huge map of Isle Royale NP (awesome). Hell, the sign on the street is cool enough to warrant entrance. There are a couple of TV's, which have always been playing sports.
The tap selection is great - on my first visit, I ran through some Pliny and Damnation. They do brewery showcases featuring some rare beers from various breweries (Boundary Bay, Dogfish Head, Harmon have all been recent). Their taps rotate quickly and attract some nice one-off releases.
The food is great - only small plates thus blocking off the dinner crowd effect. The small plates are fairly priced and consist of high end meats and cheeses with some vegan options I believe.
Killer neighorhood joint in a neighborhood full of killer neighborhood joints.

This is an excellent new bar/small plates place that I stumbled upon with my girlfriend on their opening day. We were in Seattle for the tail-end of our two-week West Coast adventure, traveling through San Francisco, Portland and Seattle by train. Seattle was the only repeat destination for me, and since it was at the end, we decided to use the time to relax and headed to the Ballard neighborhood, which we had missed on our previous trip. Only an hour or two after arriving at the Amtrak station, we spotted the Noble Fir.
It's a small place with a great list of mostly local brews in a relaxed, but well-done space. The owners are an outdoor-enthusiast couple and the place has been done up to reflect that interest--from a collection of hiking books and maps that customers are encouraged to peruse, to the carabiner coat hooks under the bar. It's a very sunny, comfortable space, and despite our initial suspicion that it looked a bit fancy from the outside, it was incredibly relaxed and inviting inside.
The owners (and one employee we saw) were extremely friendly and helpful. In addition to reasonably priced beers, they had very inexpensive and well-done small plates and sandwiches, and one of the owners offered us a free bottle that a distributor had left him on our second visit. He thought it was similar to the beers we had ordered and wanted some customer feedback. We were more than happy to oblige.
Almost all of the beer (and wine, but who cares?) was locally made, which is a nice treat. There are so many places that carry great, nationally and internationally available beer now, that it's nice to see places adopting a local focus. We really loved this place, and it was one of only two repeat visits on our entire trip.
