Notes/Commercial Description:
Hoppy Boy India Pale Ale is Twisted Pine Brewing Company’s flagship beer. With a rocky ivory head, star-bright golden orange color, and massive hop aroma, Hoppy Boy is the quintessential American IPA. Citrus, resin, and a hint of malt not only greet your nose, but also your taste buds, while a smooth, lingering bitterness leaves your palate refreshed with every sip. Hoppy Boy IPA is a perfect marriage of malts and hops that is as bold as it is balanced, and thus exemplifies what American craft beer is all about.

My first Twisted Pine offering to try.Poured from the can into an imperial nonic a dull medium golden with a large fluffy white head atop.Light lemon and earthy hops in the nose along with mild caramel/biscuit,just really light and pedestrian.Flavors of earthy and leafy hops although somewhat muted, the biscuit malt flavors are as big as the hops.Eh it's ok but it's not for people who love big hopped up IPA's.

Appearance – This one has a big, white head, too foamy actually, with a thin, light orange, weak=-ooking body.

Smell – It’s pine alright and little else.

Taste – It’s namesake resiny pine is there but no malt whatsever. This beer is very one-dimensional.

Mouthfeel – This is a little better than light-bodied with some mild bitterness.

Dirnkability – Not a bad ale but nothing of substance.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams pint glass.

The beer pours a hazy orange-gold with a 2-finger head that quickly compacts to a thin, foamy top that leaves some lingering lacing.

The aroma is pretty muted: some grass and citrus and an earthy note underneath.

The taste is not bad. Bright an bitter up front from the piney hops, a little spice and citrus with a lingering piney dryness. Not detecting much from the malts.

I like the mouthfeel on this beer, medium, a little sticky and even slightly creamy. This is an easy drinking IPA but it lacks complexity.

22 oz bottle dated 1/06. Pours a golden orange with a frothy white head that quickly diminishes.

The aroma is a subdued grapefruity pine with a little bready malt.

The flavor is kind of a mess. It's very water leather with a touch of fruits and then a metallic bitter finish. It's nothing llike what I was expecting. The mouthfeel is light on carbonation and very watery.

Overall, it looked and smelled like it would be a decent IPA, but it's pretty darn bad. A drain pour (only my second).

16 ounce "tall hoppy can"

A fairly elegant one inch head is lifted above its hazed dull golden amber liquid. Slowly the head goes to a thicker film and nice looking ringed low sheeting and fields of super fine lace.

Faint and delicate pine hop nose.

Biggest problem here is the thinness of the flavor and lack of body. Very lightly hopped for an "IPA" and not much of a malt presence to boot. Pleasant enough but this drinks more like an IPA "light" then anything else.

Hell yeah...thanks to zrrbrrt for this unexpected drop on his most recent visit to Bean.
Super hazy, orange rust in color with less than a half finger of bright white head...thin, spotty lacing.
Juicyfruit aromas...major citrus, a hint of caramel with very little sweetness.
Leaning more towards lemon citrus with some tea flavors as well...that sweetness barely detected in the nose, is true as well in the taste...not agressiveley bitter either.
Mouthfeel is thin for some IPA's but the flavor helps to add some depth overall.
Easy drinking here...easily a session IPA, just not a standout among so many others available.

This beer pours orange with a white head. Not much aroma at all, some citrus and orange but that is about it. The flavor has a lot of citrus and pine, but not too much bitterness. Fairly drinkable but rather pedestrian IPA. Not bad, but nothing I would seek out again.

Looks like a good craggy amberish ipa. Great aroma, like the namesake, its piney alright.

Taste, wasn't as hoppy as expected. Seems like maybe they did some dry hopping with pine, butin terms of what resonates taste wise, its not very bitter and lacks the hop depth you'll see from IPAs that have different hop additions at different stages.

Mouthfeel, loses a lot of the pine from the initial whif and aroma, takes on some tobacco, stale wood notes, but doesn't dissuade you from finishing it, just doesn't compel you to rate it higher.

I spy something local! I picked this one up on my trip to Colorado.
Pours a typical pale color. Head quickly disipates and leaves some thin lacing.
Aroma-citrusy hop aromas, with grapefruit being the dominant one.
Mouthfeel-assertive hop bitterness hits the palate and the sweet malt flavors come in and a clean hop bitterness on the finish. I dread using balanced but this is a very good IPA and the pale malt and above-average hop bitterness makes for a solid IPA that is certainly above-average. There was a fair amount of sediment in the bottle.I was curious if it was bottle conditioned or I might have got a hold of an old bottle since the date strip on the bottle was NOT marked or notched. I swirled the last few ounces and dumped it in and it tasted fine.
Good choice.

(Served in an American pint glass)

A- Copper color slightly hazy body with a thick creamy head and a gentle carbonation of bubbles. Rings of head stick to glass leaving sip marks.

S- Slight earthy hops aroma with a faint lemon hint comes through when warm. There is a soft bitter smell in the finish. The overall smell is very light overall.

T- Fresh pineapple hops are very green with a note of pineapple weed and a slight citrus zest. Soft smooth pale malt note comes through after the hops fade. There is a soft bitterness that hangs on the tongue after each sip.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a creamy texture that is from the head.

D- This beer is a nice little IPA but it doesn't have much complexity.

Poured from above the glass this beer still had a small white head with a light lacing on a honey golden colored beer.

The aroma is a light citrus to piney hops with a little bit of grass with just a touch of some light malts.

Pine and some grasses and a little citrus hops in a dryish taste.

Some piney/citrus remains in a dry aftertaste on this medium bodied beer.

Not the strongest hops taste but one I think I could drink a few of in a sitting, which I guess is good for the company. I would have to give this a thumbs up for it being a IPA that doesn't scare people away with overpowering hops.

From the can, this IPA is a pretty heavily clouded gold tinged with a deeper amber tint. It also develops a very soft and fluffy head to quite a nice height, very nearly white and quite clean-looking. It sits like a clumpy pillow for the full session in some form or another as it takes time to fall to a thick foam and leaves very clumpy, heavy spotting on the glass.
There's quite a nice aroma with lots of lemon and a bit of pine with some sweeter caramel malt coming through as well. The lemon scent's medicinal quality is the only thing preventing a better score, particularly as a bit of tropical fruits come in and a bit of grass and herb, too.
Something happens in the flavor, though, as malts seek to take over but it's the clash more than the success of it, as the hops power it out but bring some astringency in doing so. The medicinal quality notable in the smell carries out in the finish. Not a bad IPA, but it's not what the aroma promised.
The feel is pretty good, but the malts pull out some of the citrusy brightness for something heavier. The body's good, a solid medium, but with something to it that doesn't belong. The herb dies out the finish, but not too much.
