22 oz. bomber.

pours out an opaque reddish tinged brown colour with an gigantic dark tan head which has some serious retention and lace. a smoky, resiny, perfume aroma provides a treat for the nose. the taste profile leans heavily on the dark roasted malts. chewy nougat and caramel, with some cocoa and iced coffee notes. i can swear i can detect lactic. the hopping is splendid. just the right amount of tea like juiciness makes for a great balance, while bittering is confined to just a kiss on the back end. i'm really digging the balance and juiciness of this one. medium bodied, with a juicy mouthfeel...no coarseness and tongue numbing bitterness. excellent drinkability with just a hint of the ABV.

overall this black IPA is one of the better ones i've tried. it has a milk stout quality to it that is hard to describe. really a luscious brew. highly recommended.

Poured from a bomber in to a Snifter glass.

Deep opaque black you'd see in any Porter, with the tell-tale tan head of a dark beer.

Danky hop resin smell, with a pronounced graininess and roasted coffee on the nose. I'm getting some dark chocolate notes, reminiscent of a 90% Lindt bar.

Hops are wonderfully subdued in this. I get that flavor I want without the mouth-puckering bitterness of a West Coast IPA. The hops are there, but not in force. Unfortunately the typical Porter/Stout flavors just aren't here. No big flavors really come up front, which is unfortunate, because it's a style with A LOT of competition.

Has a nice thickening feel to it, carbonation is dead on for me. With 8.0 ABV you can hardly tell. No bad alcohol burn.

A stylistically awesome brew, but it's lacking in individuality. I'd drink an, O'Connor(Norfolk, VA), Evolution(Salisbury, MD), or Avery New World Porter over this ANY day.

A: Poured from the bomber into a pint glass. Body is black with a half-finger khaki-colored head. Nice drips of lace on the side of the glass.

S: Some juicy hops over some roasted malt. Not too strong, but appropriate for the style.

T: First impression is the mouthfeel, actually - it's a bit thin in heft and that seems to have an effect on the overall impression, including what I'm tasting. .. which seems a bit watery. There's a little bit of roastiness, some charcoal and ash and a decent amount of hop bitterness at the finish.

M: As noted above, thin and somewhat watery.

O: This is okay-to-good. I had a friend's homebrewed Black IPA last night that was better - and it didn't cost me nearly $9 for the bomber. .. . .

Minimal head retention after the pour. Dark and nearly impenetrable to light. Light whiff of hops and dark, roasted malt. Could have used more enhanced aroma. Much lighter on the palate and not as bold in flavor as with other dark IPA's I've tried.

love that this is bigger on the abv. pours an innocuous lazy dark brown and clear color with just a finger of off white suds. smells like hoppy boy ipa with a little more roast and a little more booze, a very quaffable hopped up black ale. good ale yeast flavor above the roasted barley and light pine sap hops. balanced, but the hops are still the dominant flavor, oily and fresh, a lot like the hoppy boy ipa really. lighter body and bigger abv makes a fun early spring brew texture. I like that the body isn't overwhelming, id have a few of these before they caught up with me. carbonation is lively, and like all twisted pine beers, im sure this was better on tap that it would be in a bottle, whether they bottle it or not. I enjoyed this a lot, and props to the new world of beers on Colorado boulevard for supporting some of hese local operations.
