Amber brown and hazy in the De Proef narrow tulip with a very attractive fine-grained foam. A nice mouthfeel with the creamy carbonation. Bubbles streaming in the dusk.

Flavor is a little murky. Malty and slightly sweet. A resiny candy taste that swiftly goes dry and sharp. Grainy. An insistent tang of bitterness. The flavor of raisin bread toast. This has that classic rusty water taste of far too many Belgian beers. I can't see much point in this one, except to warn against trying random Belgians in the US.

Best before date is "B 4 14" so it that B4 2014? Well, it's from the cooler at at Grapevine Liquors in Denver.

was not a big fan of this one, from its skunky nose i am guessing this green glass wasnt handled well, or that it sat on the shelf a little longer than it should have. its got a mostly clear medium brown color and a fluffy head thats basically the same color. good carbonation maintains the head for awhile. it smells skunked out, like english malts rather than belgian yeast, and not at all fresh, also a little sweet. the flavor is better than the smell, malt forward this one, i was expecting a yeast heavy brew, but there is nothing exciting about the yeast here at all. caramel and chocolate malt sweetness fades into a slightly stale bread complex before the beer finishes probably not as dry as originally intended. i had much higher hopes after having some beers from this brewery recently, but this was a real disappointment. medium bodied and bubbly, but the flavor just isnt that good. there is still a white on the shelf too, which i would really like to try, but after this one i dont know if ill try it or not. very very average belgian beer here, freshness is likely at lease a little part of that.

Dark, amber body with a thick yet fizzy looking head (initially) with the head eventually evening out to a rich, thick top. Malty, apricot-like aroma; some apple. Deep, rich malt flavors; charred sugars; maple; slight tartness with a bit of an alcohol edge. Rich, chewy mouthfeel with a slight carbonation tingle at times, otherwise smooth; semi-dry finish.

A big, bold, wonderful tasting beer. Definitely keys on the malt notes with just the right touch of esters and phenols to make things interesting. Does a good job of keeping the alcohol flavors from overwhelming things, letting the malt and yeast components provide the right amounts of depth and complexity.

Bought summer of 2011, consumed Feb. 2012 and review written at the time (sorry for the belated posting). Bottle with best-by date of either Nov. '11 or Dec. '12, but the markings were ambiguous. Lovely looking, like Irish coffee, cloudy but not too sedimented, poured with a big sandy-tan head that sat down but remained as a thin surface layer a bit. The nose lacks oomph, smelling delicately of basement, licorice, root beer, toffee, red fruits. Quite chewy! It's fitting that mouthfeel impression came before flavor, big as that was: huge wave of toffee, toasty malt, but a sneaky sour astringency sneaks in. Quite farmhouse, that. Redeeming hop finish for, if not quite balance, at least some complexity, and interest.

This is a saison? I figured it would just be a dark ale. Frankly, the nose comes off as mostly that. Heavy on the sugars. On the flavor profile as well. I know this says farmhouse ale on the label, but really, this is a Belgian dark ale. My conundrum is whether I rate this as a saison (which I probably should), or if I should rate it on just being a beer.

a deep brown in color with a finger of head which quickly dissipated. smells of belgian yeast, lemongrass, bell pepper, slight chocolate scent. a very sweet and malty profile, slight bitterness reminiscent of dirt, slight bite of alcohol. medium body, low carbonation.

this beer tastes nothing like a saison but is still very drinkable and tasty.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark chestnut amber with a light tan, massive half glass head; having had Hof Ten Dormaal ales before, I had the glass ready when the cork blew off the bottle with the releaseof the cage. The head slowly dissipated leaving tons of lacing. Aroma of dark caramel malt, dark and dark dried fruit, hints of vinegar; slight metallic element. Flavor is bready and caramel malt, sweet dark and dried fruit, pear juice, light cocoa, and hints of Belgian yeast and spicing. Finish of pleasant residual malt and fruit. Medium bodied with a nice carbonation sharpness. A nice sweet malty ale; closer in style to a light spicy doppelbock than a saison, but tasty and fun to drink in any case. This is my favorite of the non-barrel aged Hof Ten Dormaals.
