750mL bottle from Belgium. Split 6 ways.

A: Clear copper. Decent off creme head.

N: Similar to Jenever. Tomato, biscuit, honey. Quite possibly some infection problems with some of these.

T: Same as the nose. Very biscuity with the honey and some butter. I don't really want to spend much time describing the taste because it's not interesting and not really good.

M: Medium heavy. Less alcohol in this one.

O: Similar to Jenevar and scored the same. Edited to reflect better score.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy bone head that settles to tiny dots of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drop into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, honey, fruit, wood, and brandy. Taste is much the same with a fruit and brandy flavors on the finish. There is a mild alcohol kick on the palate after each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a much better smell in my opinion.

On-tap at Beachwood II,

A: Pours a medium amber with a light white head which offers up some spotty lace.

S: Notes of barrel, vanilla and pears.

T: Sweet pear and yellow apple, vanilla and maple syrup. Notes of oak as well. A spirituous beer, finishes with a fair bit of ethanol.

M: High medium-bodied, boozy at times, has an elegance.

O: Armaganac is my favourite spirit, so I was anxious to sample this as Albus Dumbledore would say. It didn't wow me, but I enjoyed the draft for sure. Wish it had more direct liquor character in this one though.

Picked this up at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Hazy copper-amber pour with one and a half finger creamy head with decent retention and super lacing. Somewhat boozey nose with hints of caramel, oak, vanilla, apples, grass, and a touch of maple syrup. The taste starts off a bit boozey as well, but mellows as it warms. Lots of wood along with hints of vanilla, white pepper, caramel, peaches, grass, and a touch of cloves. The Armagnac really emerges at the end, but for a 12% beer, it's really pretty drinkable. The mouthfeel is smooth and almost creamy with a subtle warming from the alcohol and a slightly syrupy finish. This beer just keeps improving as it goes. Two down and six more to go!

Poured into a goblet. One of 1345 bottles.

3.5 A: Murky peach brown color. One finger of frothy off-white head. Retention is good for the ABV and a short ring of lacing is left.

4.0 S: Peppery spiciness from the yeast is the most apparent aroma. Peachy fruitiness, hay, red apple, apple orchard funk, dates. Grassy and a bit earthy. The brandy mostly lies beneath the base beer, but it's there where it works best. Vinous brandy complements the base giving a pleasant grape-y fruitiness, oak, and a prune toffee vibe. Perfect balance between the base and the barrel, which is supremely important when you aren't throwing RIS or barleywines into barrels.

4.0 T: Again there exists a great balance, but I must admit that the brandy is a bit stronger in the taste. Pepper starts the show off again and is joined by a mild clove. Apple, date, and peach fruits. Grassy, earthy, hay, outdoorzy funk. Vinous brandy and grape with light oak and vanilla. Toffee and a faint booziness, though the alcohol is quite well hidden overall.

4.0 M: Lighter medium body. Spritzy carbonation and perhaps a bit too much of it. Aside from that, it's light, bubbly, and smooth.

4.0 D: I very much enjoyed my first iteration of this beer. Great balance, depth and complexity of flavor, and an enjoyable feel.

Poured into a Nostradamus flute glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a fine two finger off-white head with great retention and lacing, nice carbonation in the glass. Aroma of caramel malt, stone fruit, apple juice; slightly earthy and a vinous hint. Flavor follows with a light, but complex flavor of stone fruit, apple and pear, caramel, light brandy. Finishes semi sweet, slightly vinous with a hint of honey and wood. Medium bodied with a nice mouth feel from active carbonation. Surprisingly light flavor for the high ABV, but enough to cover the alcohol. A subtle strong pale base with some interesting hints of flavor from the barrel. Enjoyable, but mildly flavored. I'm intrigued enough to try other variants.
