Reviewing from notes after drinking on 2/14/14. Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station in Kansas City. Poured into a small Belgian-style tulip glass.
Appearance - Black and unforgiving body, but it definitely looks lighter in body that you would expect from a big, high ABV stout. Atop said body lies a two finger cap of off-white foam that, if I didn't know better, would look like it came out of a nitro tap. Super fine bubbles and a silkiness that gives it the appearance of a nitro beer head. Retention is moderate and lacing is present, but far from overwhelming--just some faint ringing around the side as I drink it.
Smell - Faint roasted malt and a nice cracker-like grain base are front and present, but then joined by some of the hoppy characteristics in the form of herbal and a little bit of earthiness. That said, the roasted malt is the carrying the standard for this beer's aroma. The hops come off mostly as a way to prevent this from becoming one note, and they do it well.
Taste - Here, the herbal and earthy notes of the hops are a bit more aggressive, but not by much. And again, as with the aroma, they serve to compliment the great roasted malt characteristic of the beer, almost as if they are both part of the same taste profile. Again I get notes of slightly charred toast and now even a faint hint of dark chocolate, but without the sweetness.
Mouthfeel - Medium-to-light bodied and moderate-to-high carbonation. Finish is dry.
Overall, a tasty beer. When I checked into it on Untappd, it was listed as a "black IPA", but I think BA has the right of it--it reminded me a lot more of a pilsner than it did IPA, in spite of the hops. They just weren't aggressive enough to really warrant that label. This is probably the first Italian beer I've had that I would gladly order again if I came across it on a tap list or menu.

On-tap 2/26/2014 at Track 84, in Warwick, RI served in a tulip glass.
A: The beer is a deep black color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.
S: The aroma contains coffee, roasted malts and a good amount of hops.
T: The taste starts out with mildly sweet flavors of coffee and chocolate. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in. There’s a good hops presence for the style creating a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.
M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.
O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

Served in a tasting glass the Firestone Walker Beer Fest. From notes. Reviewed 1 June 2013.
A black lager with nicely roasted malts and even a hint of hop character. I've taken a dim view on many Italian beers -- so take my lukewarm reception with a grain of salt -- but this was amongst the best Italian beers I've tasted. So that much was welcome.
