This nut brown ale is mildly hopped to allow dark crystal, chocolate, and biscuit malt to dominate the flavor of this malt brew. A robust, rich, and nutty ale dominated by true malt flavor.

Dark brown liquid; very little light at the edges.
Large dark khaki head; strong lacing.
Nutty nose with a hint of hops.
Creamy thick mouthfeel.
Tastes like coffee, milk & slight chocolate; HUGE flavor here.
Simply delicious. Another home run from Great River, who've never let me down yet. Sublime.

This was poured into a mug. The appearance was a fairly dark brown color with a thin almond colored foamy head. Light speckled lace. The aroma had a good rich sweet to roasty nuttiness bold and up front with a balancing caramel/toffee malt backbone. Light earthiness. The flavor blended the nuts to the malts fairly nice, sweet and roasty. Earthiness was somewhat light. Nice aftertaste of nuts and malts. Clean roasty to sweet finish. The feel was about medium bodied with a decent sessionability about it. Good carbonation and the ABV felt as suggested. Overall, whatever government standards Great River was supposed to meet for this to be organic, I guess they did.

It seems like there was a time when every microbrewery made a worthy brown ale. Lately, it seems like a neglected style. So, it's is nice to see a solid, accessible, and enjoyable example. From a tall can, this brew is deep brown with a cream colored head. The aroma is of roasted malt...backed by fruit. I get toasted wood, dark berries, malt, but limited hop scents. The taste is balanced. It has a finish that is punctuated with malt and a little bitterness. Enjoyable, and I wish that more breweries embraced this style again.

Pours a black color. 1/4 inch head of an off-tan color. Decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of sweet malt, roasted malt, slight piney hops, slight yeast, and a hint of alcohol. Fits the style of an American Brown Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, roasted malt, slight piney hops, slight yeast, and a hint of alcohol. Overall, average brown that is a decent offering.

Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a very dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is nutty, malty, chocolate. Taste is malts, chocolate, smoke, some nuts, a touch of sweetness, tasty. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a good quality beer.
