As a cascadian dark ale, this one sets the benchmark for all others...Absolutely crushes the blend of biscuity, chocolate dark malts awash in a sea of dank pine needle soup. This should be a perfect score but I left room for improvement, hard to imagine anything topping this offering

Had this at the Bistro's 14th annual IPA festival on August 6, 2011. Let's take a trip back to the black ipa days. Looks like this was a collaboration with Three Floyd's, prolly involves the Armored Fist band.

Pours dark brown, not quite black, 3/5" beige head. Aroma was bitter hoppy and moderate malt roasting giving off a light coffee from the roast kind of note.

Taste has a massive amount of pine come through, thereby displacing the roasted malt feels that tend to dominate the landscape of black ipa. Sometimes its a dehusked aspect, sometimes its a buttload of hops aspect. Its not solely bitterness, there is the flavor profile here. Manages to make 9.5% (the version I had) pretty easy going on down. This was the second strongest keg out of almost 60, but it drank easier than most beers there. Definitely drinks as a lighter body than its appearance would indicate. Even a mild nutty presence on the back end.

Seemed like a real popular beer from the scores and whatnot, but trends come and go, but this was one of the worthy black ipas I would buy if packaged.

Dark brown, not quite black. Nice aroma of citrus. Flavor follows well, citrusy, hoppy, a really tasty CDA, black IPA, whatever. I usually don;t like this style but this is a good one.

32oz crowler poured into a Boneyard shaker pint glass. Enjoyed on 8.30.16, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a nice cola brown color, amber and burgundy hues with a thick, khaki head, about two fingers high with great retention and lace. The aroma is solid, tons of piney hops, very earthy and resinous, a small amount of citrus rind with plenty of dark grain, a touch of roastiness as well, but this beer is big, it's bold and it's in your face. The flavors are just as intense, huge amounts of pine and earthy hops, spicy and grassy with strong amber malts and bready grain with mild roast and a bit of boozy warmth. The mouthfeel is good, coating, lively carbonation and a deceptively easy and light body with a dry, bold, punching finish.

Verdict: A very good CDA from Boneyard and Three Floyds. Simple and to the point, tons of hops, lots of dark assertive malts, nicely balanced, good interplay and relentless hoppiness. Definitely one of the better examples of the style and very satisfying for late summer and early fall.

On tap at CBC 2016, day 2. Pine resin, grapefruit, cocoa. Extremely hoppy and refreshing.
