64oz growler poured into a Throwback snifter.
A - Pours a medium amber in color with a finger thick pillow of dense white foam that shows good staying power. Head slowly falls to a thick collar, leaving only sparse lacing on the glass. Small floating particles slightly mar an otherwise very good looking beer.
S - Aroma is thick with pine - super resiny. Pineapple and grapefruit heavy citrus are layered in the aroma as well. Firm malt body to balance, sugary, caramelly. Gives a bit of a sweet overall impression with tons of fruity and piney additions.
T - Much like the aroma...only more so. Resiny pine, grapefruit, tropical fruits, medium bitterness - this is more about the hop flavors than being a super bitter DIPA. Sugary and lightly caramelly malt balances things and seems to enhance the fruity, citrusy aspects of the hops smoothing the edges and really bringing them to the forefront. Really intense hop flavors here, no trace of alcohol - excellent DIPA.
M - This might be the thickest non-stout I've ever had. Has more than a passing resemblance to maple syrup in the glass and on the tongue. Carbonation is at a lower level managing just a mild tingle on the tongue. Liquid is sticky/resiny and very thick and syrupy.
O - I really enjoyed this DIPA. Strong malt backbone that I thought would take over the hops as the beer warmed a bit in the glass, but never did. Hops were firm in bitterness but not overpowering. Loaded with complex hop flavors that really expressed themselves well thru the malt base. Slight sugary aspects seemed to bring out the citrusy flavors a bit towards the front. The caramel aspect of the malt faded to the background and allowed the hops to shine - typically I find heavy malt IPA/DIPA have the caramel aspects dominate and I was afraid this one would follow that pattern too, but happily did not.
