Mid to high hoppy sweet aroma, low carbonation, sweet more than bitter, yum, sweet linger.

Shared a taster on-tap as past of a flight at the brewery; Boneyard Beer Company, Bend, USA. As part of a six-week West Coast beer tour. I rate to taste, not to style. See my blog for more details: carbeers.wordpress.com

Chilled growler into a glass, courtesy of my beer patron, ramnuts. Thank you, Frank! From notes. Consumed in late May.

A: Pours a clear copper / amber body with a generous off-white head. Good retention.

S: Notes of pine, grapefruit, tangerine, orange, honeydew, sugary pale malt. This seems sweeter and maltier on the nose than I was expecting from a DIPA...

T: Earthy bitterness that leads into a strong, almost dominant malt backbone. Pine, tangerine, grapefruit, and melon express substantial, but not overpowering, hop character. Again, as noted in the nose, this is on the maltier side and it lacks the punch I'd expect from a West Coast DIPA.

M: Medium-bodied. Moderate bitterness, no lingering stickiness. Well-disguised ABV.

O: I liked Notorious quite a bit more; this was on the malty side. Frank later commented that they were tweaking batches and this one tasted off, so maybe that's what was going on. I'd love to try it again and see what it should be like.

Big thanks to flexabull for sending this growler my way; my first taste of Hop Venom seemed off, so here's hoping for a truer reading. 64 oz. of liquid gold consumed during a Friday night poker game. I ended up $2.05, so I probably didn't drink enough.

The pour comes on fire retardant orange, semi-see-through, plenty of carbonation (yippee for properly filled growlers!). Aroma isn't as strong as I expected: citrus, touch of grassy wheat, pale malts.

Hop Venom is more Balanced Middle America than Rapacious West Coast. Even before the taste hits my chemoreceptors, I'm lifting the glass for another taste, because damn, either I'm thirsty or this is really good. Drinkability is is Casey Kasem territory, especially for a big IIPA. Taste is solid but not as impressive: tons of caramel malts (too much), light hit of dankness, along with softer notes of citrus & tentative bitterness. The malts make this towards the top of the thick IIPA list: more than some stouts I've had.

I'd take RPM any day, but this comes out the other side a very good beer.

Pint and growler purchased @ Chuck's 85th, Ballard, Seattle. Pint--$4.00. Growler--$15.00. Half Growler--$7.50. Thin mild lace wispy white head. Cloudy bright orange gold color. Aromatic floral West Coast big but not overpowering hop front. Surprisingly mellow medium textured balanced mild sweet light caramel herbal body. Balanced hop spice tasty clean bitter hint satisfying rich IPA end. Very smooth and mellow for it's 10% ABV and 80 Ibu's. Big and Tasty! (4.25 / 5.0)
