On tap at Apex bar.

A: Golden orange color with a thin ring of head but good lacing.

N: Hops show up as dried pineapple and some onion. Grapefruit and some earth. Don't get much pine, surprisingly. Also, this is not as intensely hoppy or as clean as I'd hope and expect.

T: Really quite sweet with more 'hop juice' than alpha acids. Seems to be more along the lines of a sweetened barleywine.

M: Sticky and big bodied. I really like the resinous texture of this one.

O: Not my favorite thing from Boneyard. Despite being big and burly, the hops just aren't shining through here like they do in RPM or Hop Venom. It's a good beer, but not top tier.

On tap at Toronado's San Diego post-Firestone Invitational. Was one of the surprises of the tasting. Poured into a tulip glass.

A: Apricot-orange in color, thin wispy head quickly dissipates. No lacing to speak of.

S: Citrusy-hop presence at the front of the bouquet, big toffee-malt backbone quickly balances. Notes of lemon pepper linger, along with a healthy dose of orange rind.

T/M. Citrus notes again hit first, amplified by a creamy mouthfeel. Really citrusy. Hops bend tropical mid-sip helped by ample honey-sweet malts. The alcohol isn't masked, but surprising subdued, working to spice the brew and keep the palate cleansed. Long, bitter-sweet finish.

I wasn't quite as impressed with this as I was expecting, but that's not fair because by the time everyone was buzzing about this they were well on their way. I actually liked their pale more. Still, this is a tasty, drinkable example of the style.

On tap at Apex yesterday... $5 for a 6 ounce pour (so pretty much the same price as the Boneyard notorious, when they have it on).

The beer pours a golden amber color with excellent head retention and considerable lacing. The nose is attractive, but it wasn't as pronounced as I was expecting. Still, I got some light tropical fruit, some light pine, and some noticeable dry citrus. The flavor profile replicated the nose, except there was just more of everything... more tropical fruit, and a nice hoppy bite on the finish. Mouthfeel was medium bodied at most, and as with the notorious, this beer is very light on its feet for such a big beer. You can tell the alcohol is up there, but there's no sense of heat, with alcohol very well integrated into the flavor profile.

A nice beer, but have to confess that I prefer the hop venom and notorious to this beer.

on-tap, bottleworks

Hopped with Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe

Hard not to immediately compare this to Hop Venom and Notorious, of which I think it falls a bit behind (well behind Notorious). Comparisons are cruel though, as this is still a really nice DIPA. For me the Simcoe seemed too prevalent and left a really sweet tropical taste on the palate rather than the sharp citrus bite I was hoping for. Bitterness was low. Send us more Notorious! Happy Birthday Apex!
