Sampled last night on 11/19/14. Comes in a single 22 ounce bottle for $6.99 at Hy-Vee. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a 1L German handled-glass stein.

Brew pours a very dark brown that is slightly hazy with ruby-red highlights. Just a thin off-white cap is seen and not much lacing is seen either. The aroma is very pleasant and is of dark fruits, cocoa, grains and a hint of black licorice. Even more going on with the flavor as there are some nutty caramel in the mix also. Very smooth and goes down really easy. No bitterness or harsh aftertaste at all. Medium-bodied with mild carbonation. A great brew!

Poured on-tap at the brewery and served in a shaker pint, the beer is an amber-copper coloring, with a filmy, clingy, off-white head. Nose of roasted caramel nut sweetness, with subtle smoky highlights. Flavors are rich and sugary sweet, with tangy caramel and roasted toffee dominating the palate. Very sweet. The aftertaste is cloying, sugary, roasted caramel. Slick, sweet, cloying finish.

From a 650 ml bottle into a pokal.

A-A normal pour produces a slim finger of tan head. Retention is less than a minute and there is no lacing. The beer is deep amber with brassy highlights and a few bubbles to be seen in there.

S-I smell some cocoa at first, along with sweet plum and other dark fruits, some grain, a bit of nutty flavor, and a lot of malty grain. Hops are pretty much absent, but there is just a hint of zesty, fruity citrus.

T-The taste is pretty similar to the smell. Lots of sweetness, plum fruit, nuttiness, malted grain, and a bit of milky cocoa powder. I detect a faint suggestion of hops on the back of my palate, but they come through as just a whiff of bitterness.

M-The feel is a bit wet and heavy. Carbonation is mild to average in volume and slightly chunky.

O-Strangely enough, it is spring and I am drinking malty dunkels. Weird. Anyway, this is a pretty good example of the style. It possesses decent complexity and nice malt flavors. There is a healthy dose of sweetness, but the beer never becomes cloying or syrupy, like I think some dunkels can be. The mouthfeel is a bit underwhelming, but not terrible. All in all, a nice beer.
