Pours a clear amber, deep red with a small off-white head that lingers.

Smells of slight bready/biscuit and lager sulfur (not out of balance). Also has some subtle earthy/herbal character.

Taste is up front rich, caramel malt that continues through the middle before ending on a slightly bitter finish that leaves notes of cherry and grapefruit. Caramel and slight cherry fruit flavor stand out the most.

Light to medium body and medium carbonation makes the beer quite drinkable.

Pretty nice beer overall. I enjoy the way it balances an interesting malt and hop profile without being overly complex; it makes for a beer you can have multiple of.

1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with decent label art acquired for $6.50 USD and served into an Odell stem-tulip/snifter hybrid glass in me friend's gaff in high altitude Fort Collins, Colorado. Reviewed live. Expectations are average. Acquired at a local bottle shop.

Served cold - straight from the fridge. Side-poured with above average vigor.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a one finger wide head of off-white colour. Decent even lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is below average - about 1.5 minutes.

Body colour is a dark nontransparent quasitranslucent amber. No floating yeast particles are visible.

Overall, it's quite dark for an altbier and not all that alive or inviting.

Sm: Caramel, red/amber malts, bread crust, light toasted malt character, and cream.

No yeast character or alcohol is detectable. I don't pick up much hop character.

A mild strength aroma.

T: Caramel, red/amber malts, bread crust, light toasted malt character, and cream. There's no real overt hop character; maybe floral hop character.

No yeast character or alcohol comes through. Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. Average complexity. Low subtlety. Not much intricacy or nuance here. I'm unimpressed. Decent balance. It's fairly cohesive, but far from gestalt.

Mf: Smooth, wet, lightly creamy, decent body, decent thickness, and okay presence on the palate. Suits the flavour profile generally well, but doesn't feel custom-tailored to it.

Not oily, gushed, astringent, harsh, hot, boozy, or rough.

Dr: Downable stuff, but quite unremarkable. Hides its ABV decently. It's passable stuff for what it is. I wouldn't buy it again or recommend it to friends. Drinkable but boring. A disappointment from Grimm Brothers. Hides its ABV decently. Price point seems high given the quality (though this doesn't impact my score).

C+

Dark amber body, lots of fine carbonation bubbles rising, good white and creamy head; excellent sheets of foam coating the glass. Malty aroma; slight caramel and honey combination. Decent lightly roasted malt flavors; nuttiness; mild bitterness. Medium-light body; slightly fizzy; crisp, clean, and dry finish.

The beer sports an excellent appearance and has above average aroma and flavors. Nothing overly unique, but good and flavorful all around.

16oz pint at the brewpub in Loveland, Colorado.

This beer appears a clear medium bronzed amber hue, with one finger of thinly foamy, wispy off-white head, which leaves little in the way of lace in the vicinity of the glass.

It smells of bready, crackery malt, a hint of lemon peel, a bit of ash, and earthy hops. The taste is more gritty bready caramel malt, some apple and citrus fruitiness, and earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is a tad fizzy, with an underlying foaminess, the body a sturdy medium weight, and somewhat clammy in its smoothness. It finishes on the dry side, the malt losing any bready sweetness, and the hops remaining earthy, and kind of musty.

A rather pleasant Alt, the malt kept tight to the chest, while the fruit and hops put their heads down and do their background jobs. Something to sip on for a while, should that occasion arise, at least until the heretofore undetected alcohol comes into play.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy bone head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, honey, and caramel aromas. Taste is much the same with a caramel flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some solid aromas and flavors.
