Labeled as a German style Barleywine. Pours a dark brown color with a velvet dark red hues throughout. Good lacing and a off white to tan head but limited retention. Nice legs/viscosity.
The nose is rich with malt and big caramel and bready overtones. Rich and complex. Some nice fruity esters that have more of a plum and raisin notes. A limited cherry and hint of woody malt aromas as well. Some minor hop notes and a light pineapple and herbal smell. Really no yeast notes but a light alcohol presence.
The taste is similar but more complex if that is possible. Rich malt flavors but not sweet. Good dark caramel notes that linger into the finish. The plums and raisins notes really come out but balanced. Some minor stone fruit notes and light herbal flavors. The hops are a bit soft. Some pineapple and herbal notes with a hint of grass. A little lite but still noticeable.
Balance is the name here. Everything comes out nicely with out over shadowing anything.
The body is full to moderatly full. The big thing I like here is that it's not overly sweet. Carbonation is light but I think that allows more of the flavor to really come out. Overall this is one tasty beer. Might be the best of Grimm's.
