Flip-top growler filled at the brewpub.

Poured first round into my 25oz Pioneer stein #42, formed a few lonely bubbles over the opaque dark brown/black brew. What bubbles there are promptly shrink and retreat to the rim, with slow-falling lace. Aroma is dark grain and licorice.

Taste starts with roasted malts, a peek of dark fruit in the middle, then coasts through the close with a light rounded bitterness. Mouthfeel is smooth, a bit less carbonated than desired/expected, and drinkability is reasonable. Pretty much a standard stout, no more, no less.

Black with a thin, light brown cap, kind of a dark tan colour. A bit of spotty lacing, but not a lot, given that the beer settled quickly to a collar with a thin skim of bubbles coating the surface. Roasty aroma, coffee and dark grains, malty and slightly charred. More of the same in the flavour, but with a sweet, malty front end and moderate bitterness lingering in the finish. Notes of caramel and chocolate too. Smooth and full bodied with moderate carbonation, decent texture. An enjoyable stout.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on March 24, 2014. Proceeds from the purchase of this bottle go toward protecting endangered fish in the Connecticut River.

The pour is very dark brown to nearly black with little to no head. Can't see through it.

The aroma has some dark roasted malt and chocolate esters up front. Vague sweetness.

The body is smooth and on the thinner side.

The flavor has a notable chocolate malt and caramel character right off with a light to mild dry bitterness. Overall, a pretty standard Irish stout but it does help a good cause.
