Sample at the brewpub. This beer pours a dark brown color with ruby around the edges, and a medium thin and creamy beige head that burns away slowly. Slick latticework of lacing. The aroma is roasty with malt and chocolate, plus some nuts. Light, smooth body with flavors of roasted malt, chocolate and light hops. The finish is sweet and malty and leaves a lightly bitter hops aftertaste. Overall this is pretty good, especially considering the low ABV.

On tap at Tenaya Creek 05/07/2008. Served in a standard pint glass.

A - Very beautiful brew; deep, dark brownish black coloration, thick head of froth, nice retention and some attractive lacing.

S - Sweet malty aroma with a burnt tone.

T - Roasted malts, some slight smoke characteristics, sweet body with a relatively dry finish.

M - Crisp, light body, sharp carbonation, clean feel.

D - Mighty fine brew, had it pegged as a schwarzbier upon trying it, but no worries, it's a well crafted dark lager. Abv listed on the menu as 4.5%, so I'd say this is a great session brew. Highly recommended.

Sampled on tap at the brewpub. This beer is almost a schwarzbier, and is perhaps the brewer's interpretation of that style, but he also said it could be called a dunkel.

This beer poured a clear, deep chestnut color with light brown foam that settled but clung to the glass in some clumps. The smell was modest, and really did not come forth until the glass was allowed to warm to cellar temperature (from the frigid, near freezing pouring temperature). When warmed, the smells of coffee and malt came forth. The taste was lightly malty with hints of coffee and cocoa and only a slight bitterness. The coffee flavor became more pronounced when the beer warmed. The mouthfeel was smooth and clean with medium body and modest carbonation. Overall it was clean and dry, but with a faintly chocolately aftertaste. This was a very nice and enjoyable beer, whether called a schwarzbier or dunkel.
