Notes/Commercial Description:
Old Jackalope Barleywine Style Ale: Whats sealed in this bottle is only heard of in myths. Its so rare in fact, we have used a magical seal that only opens with an "Abracadabra," or the bottle opener hanging from your keys. This rich and complex ale uses a variety of malts and hops to balance what we think is one ultimate beer. Share it with friends, savor it with colleagues, or stash it away for a future occasion. This ale will keep for months, or years if you manage to resist the temptation.

22oz brown bomber with a bottled on date.

LOOK: Massive sticky head, dark amber.

SMELL: Spicy, figgy, alcoholic, sweet, caramel, toasted malt, dried grass, floral.

TASTE: Creamy, potent, sweet, hoppy, caramel, resin, citric rind, rustic grain, ripe figs, yeast, warming alcohol.

A solid barleywine from first sniff to the last sip. Balanced though the hoppiness resonates for a good while. For its size the alcohol is still pretty manageable. This one is worth the hunt.

White wax topped 22oz bottle from VegasHopHead (thanks Anthony!). Bottled 4/2/13. Served in a Clown Shoes snifter.

Pours an opaque orange hued russet with almost two full fingers of fluffy off-white head. Nice retention as a quarter finger cap lingers, leaving large sheets of lace.

Smells of nondescript sweet fruit, old orange peel, slight pine and caramel.

An interesting blend of flavors. Caramel, citrus rind, toffee, pine, pears, plums, bready malt, woody and earthy notes, raisins and a blanket of booze that creeps in and amongst the other flavors.

An almost chewy, medium-heavy feel with moderate carbonation. Long, bitter sweet finish with caramel, pine, citrus and dark fruit.

While there may be nothing to really elevate this above the herd, Old Jackalope isn't bad at all. I think I'm drinking this during an in-between phase where there are still hop notes clinging on that have not faded to let all the malts truly work their magic. Not hunt-worthy for my tastes but a solid brew.

Bottled 1/30/14

A - 3.75 - Dark orange/brown clear color with a white head that fades pretty quickly. Leaves a little bit of lacing.
S - 3.75 - Nice citrusy, spicy smell from the hops. Some alcohol and sweet bready malts in the background.
T - 3.75 - Very spicy/citrusy and bitter from the hops. Hops almost completely cover up the malt, which whispers in the background with a little bit of caramel sweetness.
M - 3.5 - This was bottled barely a month ago so i can understand the alcohol warmth and overpowering bitterness from the hops. The bitterness sticks around in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium in body and heavy in alcohol/bitterness.
O - 3.75 - This is a very hop heavy American barleywine. I don't mind it, but I think a few years of age on this one would balance the hops/malt, and help mellow out the alcohol too. Since it's so amazingly affordable I think I'll pick up a few bottles and see how it ages. :)

Super hoppy and spicy nose with a nice, white head. The taste is conflicting...lots of sweet malt (as expected in a BW) and an overpowering amount of bitterness that hangs around long after your previous sip. Maybe this should be called an imperial brown IPA?

This is a very good barleywine.

Deep garnet red with brown, it has medium big pale tan head steadily shrinking to frothy ring and thin frothy veneer, some lace.

Aroma is strong caramelised bread crust, plain bread crust, caramelised orange rind, hints of pine.

Taste is sweet-spicy warming alcohol, candied citron and caramelised orange, light bitterness with spicy alcohol warmth, slightly oily feel, pretty balanced. But, it lacks complexity of character or feel and the candied citron/orange element is too dominant.

a beautiful clean deep amber in color with a finger of creme colored head which dissipated slowly and left behind a nice creamy looking lacing. smells of very sweet malt, vanilla, oak, barley, dark fruits. an earthy bitterness up front followed immediately by a roasted nutty profile which is just mindblowingly delicious. lots of sweetness from the malted barley, a nice dark cherry fruity profile, all with a tiny alcohol bite. creamy mouthfeel, medium to full body with a low-medium amount of carbonation.

this is just a fantastic barleywine. got it in a surprise trade with a punk rocker from nevada.. he got it because it's put him on his ass a few times.. and i gotta say, this is one sneaky beer! thanks again frank!

To sum this one up, it seems sweet, perfumed, and bitter. Pours a handsome coppery dark amber in the tall Westons Cider glass. Carbonation is fine. So syrupy, yet so filled with leafy, herbaceous hoppy tastes.

Sugar and an increasingly medicinal type of bitterness that lasts long after the party is over. I am beginning to respect how difficult this style is-- working with the massive dose of sweet malt, enough hops to provide some balance, and create a long and interesting flavor. This one doesn't. Bitter, harsh, and tastes like some unfortunate candy experiment.

Poured from a bomber into a snifter. This was bottled 2/23/11 which is 2.5 years ago.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber/copper and leaves a minimal off-white head. Familiar barley-wine look to it.

Smell: Sweet caramel, fruity hops, malts, peach, must, leather. Pleasant, sweet aroma.

Taste: Matches smell well. Caramel, malts, peach, light orange, figs, oak, hint of pine.

Mouth-feel: Nice creaminess to it. Medium body with a solid, medium carbonation.

Overall: Definitely an impressive barleywine. Nice combination of flavors (pretty complex) and this is very manageable for its strength. A nice, sweet after-dinner drink.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 2/13/2012. Pours fairly crystal clear ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, brown sugar, pine, floral, grapefruit, orange zest, orange rind, biscuit, grass, and floral/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and hop notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, orange zest, grapefruit, raisin, floral, brown sugar, biscuit, pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Light earthy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, floral, orange zest, grapefruit, raisin, floral, brown sugar, biscuit, pine, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance and complexity of malt and hop flavors; with a great bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a moderately creamy, slick, syrupy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent barelywine style. All around great balance and complexity of deep malt and pine/citrus hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
