22oz bottle. As an unapologetic fan of a certain 1980s pop-rock duo, the name of this beer takes me a lot farther than the cutesy brewing theme espoused on the label. M-E-T-H-O...

This beer pours a solid, chestnut brown-tinted black, with the slightest of basal cola 'highlights', and two fingers of puffy, beige raw cake dough head, which leaves but a low berm of ebbing lace around the glass as it hurriedly evaporates.

It smells of grainy, bready malt, al dente oatmeal, more bitter than sweet cocoa, black licorice - of the diluted ouzo sort, and tame earthy, leafy hops. The taste is semi-sweet, fairly dense chocolate malt, a free-radical bready graininess, understated oatmeal porridge, faded dry licorice root, working-class weedy, earthy hops, and a somewhat unexpected, and thankfully subtle metallic alcohol edge.

The bubbles are present, and do an all right job of obeying the style's tacit rule of keeping to themselves, the body a decently hefty medium weight, and smooth enough, the hops and weirdly relevant booze having just a bit too much ingress. It finishes mostly off-dry, the dry chocolate oatmeal mush (I'm not getting the purported cookie stripe) sensibility planting its flag, square and true.

An agreeable enough oatmeal stout, the standard milky smoothness tempered to a fair degree by the graininess of the oat influx, and the increasingly sharp licorice edge. While not exactly 'Out of Touch', this is a small sidestep from the norm, and enjoyably drinkable for it.

A: Mahogany brown tending towards black with a small tan head.

S: Oats, biscuit, coffee combined with nicely roasted malts.

T: Baked bread with semi sweet chocolate morsels and a hint of oak.

M: Medium body and maybe a tan thin for my tastes.

O: Decent stout, but drinks a tad bit more like a porter. Enjoyable none the less.

Dark brown with amber glints in the Duvel tulip. Modest nose of dark roasted grains. Not much in the way of foam though the carbonation in the mouth is quite pleasantly fizzy.

Smooth and on the grainy side. Quite dry with a fleeting malty richness. This tastes more like an amber ale with the addition of blackened barley. A hint of winey mouthfeel. Not one of the better stouts, but maybe the oatmeal just doesn't help a lighter stout with less of the dark malty backbone. Not much bitterness. This tastes more like a Schwartzbier topped off with a little Amber Ale.

From the 22 oz bottle bought at Whole Foods in Chandler for $5.49.
