650ml bomber poured into tulip 22/12/13

A the darkest brown very deep dark cola edge, two fingers of mocha foam has decent retention hanging on for a few sips and leaves a couple random patches of lace

S nutty, chocolate syrup, root beer, some cold coffee, faint tea bag, and a little burnt wood and dark fruit

T more of the same really, a little sweetness, burnt coffee, some burnt brown sugar, decent oatmeal stout

M lighter side of medium, not that thick for the color, lots of bubbles they flatten out quickly, a little slick after the fact with some lingering char

O decent brew, dark roast plays a big role, not lacking anywhere but nothing really stands out either

one of those beers that I'd happily drink if there was nothing else around, nothing memorable but nothing to be ashamed of either

Las Vegas is known for a few things, but beer is not one of them. Tenaya Creek hopes to change my mind. And with 22 ounces, there's plenty of nectar to convince me. On to the beer:

Half an inch of beige head rests on top this nearly black beer. Retention is okay, spots of lace stick to the glass. The aroma offers the sweet creaminess of oats, and some roast from the stout. Not bad, I say. Many oatmeal stouts go to the sweeter side, though Hauling Oats straddles the middle of bitter and sweet. Some sweet oats attempt to bring the beer to the sweet side, though roasty and astringent malt brings it back to the center. A squeeze of hops add a refreshing change of pace to this stout, as for a moment I though it was going to continue as a seesaw between the malt and oats. It's medium bodied with a lower intensity of carbonation, which gives the beer more of a coating texture.

It doesn't break my thinking of what Vegas stands for, though I'll take an oatmeal stout as a secondary attraction.

22oz bottle. As an unapologetic fan of a certain 1980s pop-rock duo, the name of this beer takes me a lot farther than the cutesy brewing theme espoused on the label. M-E-T-H-O...

This beer pours a solid, chestnut brown-tinted black, with the slightest of basal cola 'highlights', and two fingers of puffy, beige raw cake dough head, which leaves but a low berm of ebbing lace around the glass as it hurriedly evaporates.

It smells of grainy, bready malt, al dente oatmeal, more bitter than sweet cocoa, black licorice - of the diluted ouzo sort, and tame earthy, leafy hops. The taste is semi-sweet, fairly dense chocolate malt, a free-radical bready graininess, understated oatmeal porridge, faded dry licorice root, working-class weedy, earthy hops, and a somewhat unexpected, and thankfully subtle metallic alcohol edge.

The bubbles are present, and do an all right job of obeying the style's tacit rule of keeping to themselves, the body a decently hefty medium weight, and smooth enough, the hops and weirdly relevant booze having just a bit too much ingress. It finishes mostly off-dry, the dry chocolate oatmeal mush (I'm not getting the purported cookie stripe) sensibility planting its flag, square and true.

An agreeable enough oatmeal stout, the standard milky smoothness tempered to a fair degree by the graininess of the oat influx, and the increasingly sharp licorice edge. While not exactly 'Out of Touch', this is a small sidestep from the norm, and enjoyably drinkable for it.
