I was pleasantly surprised with this beer. I have no experience with Tenaya Creek, but I found this offering to be a very suitable oatmeal stout. The appropriate flavors - roasted oats, semi-sweet chocolate and dark roast coffee - were definitely present. I found the mouthfeel a bit lacking because it was barely bubbling, but perhaps that is personal preference. There was also a bit of sediment at the bottom of the bomber bottle I sampled. Not quite in the same league as the Sam Smith's of the beer world, but definitely a a worthy brew.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, toasted oat, and bittersweet cocoa aromas. Taste is much the same with dark roasted malt, burnt oatmeal, and bitter cocoa flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice mix of roasted malt and oat characteristics that is slightly better in the smell to me.

Serving type: bottle.

Poured dark opaque brown with dark tan head, 6 fingers of dark tan head. way over-carbonated. I've drain poured over carbonated home brews that had less carbonation than this. I let it sit 15 minutes and repoured... still 4 fingers of foam.

Aroma is steel, grass and grains. Sadly the nice grain notes are not the centerpiece.

Flavor starts to make up for the two fatal flaws... some clean hops, chocolate malt, coffee and chocolate hints

Mouthfeel is lively with all the CO2, not bad.

Overall, a nice attempt flavor wise, but not something I'd grab again. I have to assume I may have a flawed bottle, as others are complaining about the lack of head (it all ended up in my bottle!), and generally I like Tenaya's offerings

A: Mahogany brown tending towards black with a small tan head.

S: Oats, biscuit, coffee combined with nicely roasted malts.

T: Baked bread with semi sweet chocolate morsels and a hint of oak.

M: Medium body and maybe a tan thin for my tastes.

O: Decent stout, but drinks a tad bit more like a porter. Enjoyable none the less.

Las Vegas is known for a few things, but beer is not one of them. Tenaya Creek hopes to change my mind. And with 22 ounces, there's plenty of nectar to convince me. On to the beer:

Half an inch of beige head rests on top this nearly black beer. Retention is okay, spots of lace stick to the glass. The aroma offers the sweet creaminess of oats, and some roast from the stout. Not bad, I say. Many oatmeal stouts go to the sweeter side, though Hauling Oats straddles the middle of bitter and sweet. Some sweet oats attempt to bring the beer to the sweet side, though roasty and astringent malt brings it back to the center. A squeeze of hops add a refreshing change of pace to this stout, as for a moment I though it was going to continue as a seesaw between the malt and oats. It's medium bodied with a lower intensity of carbonation, which gives the beer more of a coating texture.

It doesn't break my thinking of what Vegas stands for, though I'll take an oatmeal stout as a secondary attraction.
