Tap at Good Bottle co. A lighter brown pour than most, thin layer of frothy off white head.

Aroma,  toasted malt, dark chocolate and very nice smokey wood.

Taste,  herbal notes up front, followed by a nice beach wood and barbeque smoke.  The smoke is husky.  Some light chocolate malt.  A pretty dry clean finish though.
Definetely more of a smoked beer, not much porter characteristics.

Not quite medium body, fairly lively carbonation. Drinks very easy, as long as you like smoke. A tad thin feeling, I think the finish is the only flaw.
Liked this one quite a bit, though a bit muddling in the finish.

Fills a pint glass dark brown with a one-inch, creamy almond head that lasts for minutes, leaving some sticky lace. When held to the light, a dark glow of ruby is easily discerned.

The smokiness is clearly present, though not overwhelming, as many of the style can be. The smoke is also more woody than is typical, leaving the summer sausage well in the background. Roasted malt easily finds its way into the profile.

Clearly malt with some coffee and chocolate. The porter style pairs quite well with smoked barley. A light finish is sweeter than the initial sip.

A medium body with light carbonation and alcohol that is well concealed. The texture is soft.

Friends and I emptied the growler during dinner. This beer is big on comforting qualities and was an excellent trade.

Poured into a pint glass and the dark clear brown brew produced a nice 1+ finger light mocha colored forthy head with nice lacing on the glass.

The aroma is malty with a hickory smoke aroma in the background.

The hickory smoke really comes forward on the flavor and it is well received by this here beer drinker. I love this fantastic Tar Heel brew. Having no barbeque to pair with it, on my last pint from the growler I made a toast, horseradish dejon mayo, corned beef, baby swiss cheese, fried egg, baby swiss cheese, fried egg, baby swiss cheese, corned beef, horseradish dejon mayo, and toast samitch. The brew really helped bring the corned beef flavor forward, but at the same time not washing out the other flavors from the sammy. I bet this would not only be great with NC BarBQ, but with about any swiney meal. Tenderloin, Country Ham Biscuit, or just by it's self (that's how I consumed my 1st 3 pints). .

WE INTERUPT THIS TO BRING YOU AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ... WTF is up with catagory descriptions ??? The brewer calls this a Hickory Smoked Porter, but BA and several other sites put it in the Hybrid Smoked Beer catagory. And the silly thing is that the BA brothers have never even tryed it. How do you catagorize something you've never had?? Also, how is this brew any less a Porter and more a Smoked Beer than Alaskan Smoked Porter, or Stone's 7 different "Smoked Porters", or Capt. Lawrence's Imperial Smoked Porter to name just a few (all are listed as American Porter) ?? Hell's bells, the American Porter style description clearly state "Whether it is highly hopping the brew, USING SMOKED MALTS, or adding coffee or chocolate to complement the burnt flavor associated with this style." From what I understand, Fullsteam hickory smokes thier own malts, someone correct me if I am wrong !! Of the 154 beers found when searching "smoked porter" on BA, 22 were Smoked Beers, 8 were English Porters, 8 were Baltic Porters, 1 was a Rauchbier - which would be hard to believe if they brewed with an ale yeast, 1 Fruit/Vegetable Beer, and 1 Pumpkin Ale. This means that 113 of the 154 were catagorized as American Porters and these numbers do not even include Hogwash (and many others I am sure) since the words Hickory Smoked Porter is not listed in the name.

This reminds me of some of the postings of Eric Lars Myers on his blog "Top Fermented http://www.topfermented.com/ ". especially his blog "Why Beer Rating is Crap" http://www.topfermented.com/page/2/. He makes many good points, but to bring this to the point I am making, How can you rate a miscatagorized beer objectively or subjectively. It's like comparing dogs and cats against one another. Yes they are both mammals (beer), they are also hairy (Ales), they both bark ??? (Smoked Beer and American Porter ???). OK, I have beat this point to much. You call it Smoked Beer, or a Hamster, or a Kinnyculacky if you wish, to me; it's a friggin great American Porter that has a Hickory Smoked aroma and flavor.

WE NOW RETURN YOU TO YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED SHOW. Medium bodied and carbination makes this a well balanced brew with enough hickory smoked malts to let you know it's there, but not over the top where it tastes like you are on a fire fighters practice day. I love this brew, not only as a great sipper, but also as one that I will continue to explore food pairings with. WTG Fullsteam, you've got a fan for life !

Finally trying this! Brought in a Pork Sandwich from the Q Shack. What a pariring!

Pours deep brown with red hues. Very small head.

Smell isnt as loaded with smoke like i expected, but actually makes it appealing.

Initially, the smoke is very subdued, making this beer rather lifeless, but as you drink the smoke really becomes the forefront as it should. This beer needs the hickory smoke to be right.

On tap at the brewery

The description claims it's bacon in a glass so of course I'm intrigued.

Pours a dark brown, almost black, with a thick head. Nose detects hickory smoke which does indeed invoke bacon. Taste is roasted malt and hickory/smoke flavor.The hickory takes over the taste buds as the pint continues, though you don't really get closer to bacon in a glass than this. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a little more watery than you would expect. Overall a great offering; a completely different porter than anyone else is offering as far as I've ever seen.

Another great Fullsteam beer that favors intrigue and nuance over flash and intensity. Pours a common deep brown color with glimmers of red shining through and a meager cap of foam on top. The aroma is uncommon, however, with a smoothly-blended combination of smoke, a bit of nuttiness, and a light malty sweetness. The flavor is even more distinctive, with quite a bit of caramel sweetness being consumed by a sweet, woodsy smokiness. The soft carbonation keeps the flavors from becoming syrupy and helps the beer glide across the tongue.

Overall, the flavor is certainly smoke-forward, but the "meatiness" is delivered with a delicate touch rather than a heavy hand, which takes this beer away from something that could come across as gimmicky and instead makes it interesting yet highly drinkable.

A unique smokey beer, not like the subtle smoked peat of a Scottish wee heavy, but more akin to "liquid smoke". Not in a bad way, mind you. Just more pronounced.

This is a pint at a time beer that is best paired with foods rather than sole drinking. Sweet and smokey with a nice finish. Due to it's strong flavor of smoke, it goes great with assorted cheeses and crackers as an almost substitute for the smoked meats you could eat with them.

I had great success using a growler full to slow cook a pork shoulder in a crock pot, and added some while cooking down my collard greens for a delicious North Carloina style BBQ during the winter when I didn't feel like slow cooking outside for 16 hours.

Absolutely worth a try if you're in the area or lucky enough to find it on local taps or smaller stores.

Pours a mix between chocolate and dark red with a fairly frothy one finger head. Decent lacing.

It's always an interesting task to describe the particular character of the smoke in rauchbiers. This one features burnt wood, like a campfire that has died out, roasted malts, and smoked sausage. Honestly, it's like liquid smoke.

Roasted malt, a sweet toasty maltiness, liquid smoke, and beef jerky. For me, there's nothing to off-set the smoke - the porter is drowned out. In that way, the base is a nice conduit for the smokiness, but there just isn't much to say about the beer otherwise. No chocolate notes, no coffee, and the watery mouthfeel again serves as a detriment.

Medium-light in body.

A growler from Fullsteam. Impressive head with nice lacing. The smoke nose gives you a hint of what's to come, but unfortunately that hickory overpowers everything else, including the roasty malt. A bit jarring.

Tried it with some ham to see if would be more complementary, but it battled the food instead of blending with it. Love everything else I've had from Fullsteam, but not this one.

Poured a roasted chesnut brown into color with a nice frothy off white head that settled into a creamy mass pretty quickly,aromas are a little light with that hickory smoke most prominant,a tinge coffee roast as well.The hickory flavors really are the main component on the palate but it doesnt overwhelm to much,its not intense and in your face,it lingers for quite awhile.A slight bitter chocolate note in the background,and peppery spice flavor in the finish round out the flavor profile,this would be amazing with some bbq,I agree with the brewers here.

Poured from a growler into my Duck Rabbit Milk Stout glass. This has the best head of any growler beer I've ever had. I'm sure this is due in no small part to the nice vacu-seal growler top Fullsteam uses. The beer pours out a clear dark brown with mahogany notes from the small amount of light that shines through.

This beer is billed as a smoked porter and the nose doesn't lie. Bold campfire aroma up front with a spicy smoked meat component akin to andouille sausage. No hop aroma is noticeable, but that's fine for a porter.

The smoke isn't quite as prominent on the tongue, but it's still the dominant flavor component. A bit of the dark roasted malt shows through with some caramel/toffee. There's a faint smoked ham note up front, but the smoke is more obvious in the aftertaste.

The beer feels just a bit thin on the tongue. It would be nice if it stuck around just a slight bit longer. Carbonation is just right for the style, medium with a slight prickle, but not effervescent. Although this isn't a complex beer, I keep going back for more. That's a good thing considering I have 3 more pints of it in the fridge!

Saw a few Fullsteam growlers at Sam's today and decided to splurge. The brewery is right down the road, I should make a pit stop in there soon. Pours a dark, almost murky brown with little head. The nose is heavy on the woodsmoke and barely smells like a beer at all, although dark malt does emerge as it warms.

Once again, this is a heavily smoked porter and that flavor rules from the tip of the tongue until the final aftertaste. Some dry brown malt, peat, earth, and dark baker's chocolate dance around the outside. The texture is thin and could use a little more heft to handle the smorgasbord of flavors. I can definitely see why the guy at Sam's told me to try it with a barbecue sandwich.

Overall this is original, interesting stuff. If anything it reminds me of a rauchbier or something else so highly smoked that you feel like you're drinking a smoked sausage.

On-tap at Rockfish Grill served in a nice sturdy 18oz schooner a deep almost opaque black that show ruby highlights when held to light. The aroma is smoky brown malts with slight cocoa. The taste is hickory smoked dark malts up front with a nice subtle job backbone providing nice balance. The beer is medium bodied with nice coronation. This is a great overall beer, enjoyable on a hot Summer day, but i know it will be even more enjoyable on a cold Winter night.

I haven't had the chance to actually wash down some hog with it, but I look forward to trying it out next time I can.

First off, this is a SMOKED Porter, and it definitely has a SMOKY flavor, though it's clean and not particularly peaty. It's definitely not for faint of heart, and meant to be consumed with food rather than by itself - It's surprisingly refreshing for a smoked porter, but the smoky flavors would become overpowering if i were just trying to drink a six pack on the back porch. On the other hand, i can't imagine anything that would pair better with pulled pork barbecue or many strong meat flavors and spicy foods for that matter, an area where many beers fall flat... chili rubbed steak, burgers, sausage, jambalaya even.
