A - Typical bar atmosphere, with limited parking.

S - Service was solid, but not spectacular.

Sel. - Average at best.

F - I've only had their burger, but it is very good.

Overall, good bar in the south Lamar area, but nothing to drive out of the way for.

Summary: A great place in South Austin to find a good Texas beer and eat above average bar food, all for a reasonable price.

I've been to the Black Sheep twice. Neither time, was it wasn't overly crowded. Both were weekend nights. There is both outdoor and indoor seating. Inside, it's cool and inviting, perfect for those blistering summer afternoons in Austin. The outdoor patio is right on Lamar. An odd location, but it seems to work. I've sat closer to the front door than the street and don't remember the traffic being an issue. One advantage of the location is that it's east facing, so no afternoon sun. It's enclosed in the colder months of the year. Service has been good, as well. The staff are fairly knowledgeable and attentive. Good selection of quality beers, with an emphasis towards Texas (particularly Austin) brews. While you don't have the variety of the Gingerman or Flying Saucer, what they have is good. Food, for the most part, has been good. I've had several of the appetizers and tasted a few of the main dishes. The carnitas sandwich was the only item in which I was disappointed. Prices for both beer and food are very reasonable, making it easy to want to come back.

Would I go back? Given that it's only a mile from my house, you bet. Even if that wasn't the case, I think it's one of the better beer bars south of the river.

Note: If you go, there's very limited parking in front. Turn on Kinney (the corner to the immediate north) and park in back.
