Not what it used to be. The beer list was around 34 or so beers on my last visit at Easter 2001, when I stayed in Antwerp and revisited for "old times sake". It has a large basic room with white walls, complete with beer tables and some wooden seats. It feels bereft of character sometimes when empty. The bar area is much better but tends always to be full. Amongst regular beers, it still however does serve the House Beer which is a mix of wheat beer and pale ale and strangely, very refreshing. Cantillon and Boon lambics beers are also available. The Great White Eagle is on Reyndersstraat nearby other bars and beer/gin shops, so it is worth popping in for a beer. Whilst here try the Gin Shop over the road and the nearby Herk (#33) as well.

As you walk in from the street you enter a small courtyard. On our visit, on a very cold Sunday evening in March 2010 the only thing in the courtyard was a huge gas torch flame for smokers to warm up on, the tables and chairs were stashed away for the winter. The far righthand corner hosts a small chapel, the entrance to the actual bar is in the far left corner.
Once inside you see an almost square room set out like a restaurant and most people seemed to be eating on our visit, we had already had a Shwarma in an Iranian joint by the station. It was no problem just wanting a beer though, others were doing the same.
Mixed crowd of customers, mostly British, with three Americans behind our table (it was the ZBF weekend).
Beer selection and service were both fine, we were joined by a couple of British guys we'd met on the Friday in the 'Oud Arsenaal' and crossed the road with them to finish off our drinking in the 'Vagant', as did many others who had been in 'The Great White Eagle'.

A wonderful courtyard bar with a beer list of about 70 bottles and a dozen taps. Taps included Cristal Alken, De Arend blond, Arend kriek, De Koninck, Grimbergen dubbel , Maredsous blond ,Moeder Overste, and Brugse witte. The bottle list featured all of the Trappists accept Westvletteren, plenty of Geuze including Drei Fonteinen, and lots of other high quality Belgian brew. Elaina snagged a bottle of Tripel Karmelite while I opted for a 40 cl tap pour of Arend Kriek, a cherry beer of average quality and interest. Service came quickly and kindly from our ultra a feminine bartender and we enjoyed finishing off a great night at the ancient wooden tables under the moonlight.

We went her for lunch on our second day. We chose to sit outside in the courtyard, because even though it was a windy day the courtyard was very sheltered (plus we're annoying smokers and you can't smoke inside!)
The food was fantastic. We both had the trio of croquettes and the house arend kriek. It was one of those weird beers which tasted very sour on the initial sip but became sweeter as we drank. It was quite lovely.
The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. Noticed a few beers on the list that we would have tried, time permitting.
Warning though. At about half one in the afternoon a coachload of tourists arrived and filed upstairs. Fortunately we were ready to leave by then but it's worth bearing in mind that if this is a common occurrence it may affect the prompt service we experienced.
