Cheers to Bbothen for this one!

Pours chestnut mahoagany with 3 fingers of tan head.

S: Faint roasted malt & some pear

T: Charred & roasted malt, some baker's choclate & woody hops up front. Faint caramel moxes with roasty grain & a touch of cocoa as this warms along with some piney & even touch of peppery hop note

MF: Firm carbonation, medium body, decent balance

A decent Black IPA, mot a good one

I really wanted to like this beer. I've had Knee Deep's Hoptologist, it was delicious. This beer however, while billed as a black IPA, is rather bad tasting. I detect a weird oily mouthfeel, and a strange cheesy taste, kind of peppery. I'm having a hard time getting through even the first 5 FL Oz, its really not pleasurable, unfortunately. The head was nice, and it had a little lacing. The taste is driving me to currently pour it out, as the only bitterness is an unpleasant one. I'm going to have to review the Hoptologist soon, I feel so bad about this review. Skip this beer, grab a Hoptologist instead if you want something tasty from Knee Deep.

Nice and black. Not great head. Good lacing.
Big C hops to the nose. Not overly powerful or pungent though.
Moderate pale ale hop levels. Not tons of bitterness or taste. Maybe Amarillo hops to for the late additions. Only 57 IBU's. Not sweetness but not overly dry either
Thin mouthfeel. 6% abv is unnoticeable

Poured into a nonic.

Pitch black with two fingers of creamy off white, frothy head. Looking good.

Smells massively of diacetyl and not a whole lot else.

Tastes of some roastiness, but again mostly diacetyl. Piney and earthy hop finish.

Thin and watery.

If it weren't for the diacetyl issues this might have stood a chance, but it's pretty undrinkable as is.

Clear dark brown colored beer. Medium sized light brown colored head that doesn't last.

Smells sweet with a mix of C type hops and sweet malt. Patent malt with a trace of smoke. Overall this has a burnt sugar aroma like caramel taken a little past the candy stage.

Starts out strongly bitter with abundant patent malt and a burned flavor. Bone dry not much residual malts. Strongly bitter with a burnt taste, needs more malt to balance.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall not impressed. Main problem here is that there isn't enough malt to balance it out.

Poured from a bomber into my Deschutes tulip glass...

A - Pours a very dark brown color. A shade lighter than black, with a 1 finger light tan head.

S - Does have a sufficient hop aroma, but not in your face.

T/M - This one falls kinda flat for me. There's a little hop bitterness, but not nearly enough to call this one an IPA. It's almost a burnt hop flavor, with a mild malt backbone. Medium mouthfeel, and slightly under carbonated.

O - It's an good black ale, but a mediocore black IPA at best. This on was just put on the shelf, so I know it's fresh. I was really looking forward to a bigger hop flavor.

Poured from a bomber into a goblet.

A: Slightly hazy, medium brown color with less than one finger of diminishing mocha-tinted foam head. Light lacing remains on the glass.

S: Mildly piney and slightly scorched, with traces of honest floral perfume and carbon dioxide.

T: Begins dry, with weak roasted malt and peppery herbaceous hop aromatics. Acidity is strongly carbonic, rather vacant, while the middle is bitter but otherwise featureless. The finish is similarly bitter and transparent, becoming bone dry by the end.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, wet and slightly acidic on the palate, with brisk carbonation.

D/O: Lacking interesting features, about all this beer has in its favor is its fair (but not really noteworthy) drinkability. In its defense, the smell has no problems meeting expectations, though the flavor is deprived of intensity in a way that would be difficult to replicate at home. In terms of flavor it might seem like black patent was used in place of base malt, yet the color is far too light for that to be the case. Skimping on ingredients to keep costs down is more likely to blame.

I review this one so that it has another review and can possibly garner sufficient reviews for a grade.

Pours black with a thick, firm, fluffy and lovely head. Appearance is inviting and pretty.

Nose is mild roasted grain; simple very light pineapple hop character. No complexities in the nose.

Mouthfeel is medium/thin with light carbonation but completely forgotten because of a very aggressive bold bitter flavor profile. No elegance, no character and no real flavor profile except for "bitter." There is no appeal to the bitter and no character.

A pine oil bitter that leads to a huge and long lasting palate wrecking bitter that is not appealing and lasts forever.

Someone missed the mark but one can see where it was trying to go. Maybe next time.

Another kneedip beer, this one isn't via Sierra Nevada via Sudwerk though. I think its just via Sudwerk.

Pours a ruddy brownish light black, almost no head or lace to it. Aroma is sawdust, not really piney or citrusy as claimed (see Trout Hop or Double Mountain for a great example of tropical citrus aroma out of a black ipa).

Taste, has plenty of bitterness, but not really the mouthfeel of hops I'd like in an ipa. Long boil time, but in terms of aroma and dry hop additions, mmm, questionable. And why a seasonal ipa in winter unless you really bring it a la Hoptimum or Pliny? Seems like a good time to release a stout, but I digress.

Haven't really been super impressed with any of the Reno black ipa's to get released lately, but at least Buckbean's has a unique hop bill to it.

EDIT: Had it again. Again, no hop mouthfeel, just bitterness. I'm all done with this beer.
