A steady pour into my Lost Abbey teku glass produces a three-finger thick, pale amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a full to dark amber color that shows a brilliantly clear, bright amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of pine needles, caramel malt coated grapefruit zest, a dusty white pepper like note, perhaps a hint of menthol and a back drop of toasted, crystal malt, biscuit like notes and perhaps some brown cracker like notes.

The beer is amply bitter throughout, and it almost has a green hop astringency to it in the finish. The crystal malt character almost seems like it has some cardboard like oxidation to it somehow; this is a bit weird, as the beer should be pretty fresh and maybe this is just an interaction between the green hops and the crystal malt somehow. The pine and herbal hop notes are definitely the leading flavors here, but there is quite a bit of supporting grapefruit and tangelo like hop notes here as well. The crystal malt, as mentioned previously, certainly contributes as well with notes of English biscuit, toasted whole grain notes, some sweet tea like notes as well as some caramel malt sweetness. The hop character has quite a bit of peppery character that lingers in the finish along with the bitterness and a sweet, caramelized malt character. The body of this beer has a medium’ish quality to it, but is about where an IPA should be; it could be a touch lighter perhaps, but this is certainly nowhere near a heavy interpretation of the style.

The nose & flavor of this beer certainly has a certain balance between the malt and the hops; while it is certainly a hop dominated beer, I wouldn’t describe this as your typical West Coast IPA, the noticeable crystal malt character and the muted, for an IPA, aroma hops certainly are a bit of a throwback. There is way too much caramelized malt character in this beer, it really tends to dirty, and muddle what should be a cleanly focused hop forward beer; the crystal malt seems to accentuate the harsh side of the hop character and really makes this beer unbalanced for an IPA. With so many stellar, hop focused examples of the style out there, I find a hard time wanting to drink this; having said that though, for those that like noticeable crystal malt character in their IPAs, then this might be an IPA for you. It just doesn’t scratch my, particular, hop itch though. The beer does manage to soften up a bit as it warms up, but not enough to bring this beer into focus.

This is easliy the best Knee Deep beer I have tried....not sayin a whole lot.Poured into an imperial nonic a somewhat dull medium golden with a tight formed half finger white head that settled slowly into a frothy mass.Sharp citric hops along with a pretty intense vine-like note,a little booze thrown in.Fuller creamy body to the beer, leafy and citric hops over top of a tasty lightly sweet malt base, the body is the best part of the flavor profile in my mind. There is good hop complexity on the palate, the chinooks give off a real nice sharp/spicy element, and the body is fantastic, much better than I expected.

22oz bottle

A- Poured into a pint glass. Pours a clear golden amber color with a nice off-white head.

S- The aroma is sweet buttery malt with some citrusy hops.

T- The taste like the aroma has a good amount of malt up front with some bitterness in the finish from the hops. This IPA is definitely on the more balanced side compared to some of the more one dimensional IPAs out there.

M- The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

O- Overall, this is a decent IPA but nothing I would purchase again.

Poured minimal head on a clear, dark straw colored body.
The aroma is a nice mixture of pine and lemon.
The taste is sweet malt with moderate bitterness coming in second. Finishes with a dry bitter.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.
A nice drink, but a little on the sweet side.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium coppery amber with a fine half finger white head with good retention and lacing. Nice aroma of citrus rind, pinapple and piney hops. Flavor follows aroma, grapefruit and citrus rind, with pine and a hint of herbal hops, finishing with a strong, lingering hop bitterness. A slightly sweet malt base supports the hops well. Perhaps a bit astringent in the finish, but again well supported by fresh hops flavor. Medium bodied with a nice mouth feel. Nicely integrated and well made IPA.

Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass. No freshness date.

A- Pours a light copper color with a 1/4 inch head that retains slightly before degrading to a thin ring around the edge of the glass and powdery surface foam. Nice clots of lacing.

S- Intense citrus nose with notes of pineapple, grapefruit and pear. Also some toffee-like malt sweetness. Quite amazing.

T- Fruit doesn't come through as much in the flavor. Mainly just grassy hops with some residual metallic taste. Still pretty nice but nothing compared to the aroma. Alcohol is relatively mild. The bitterness sinks in its teeth and doesn't let go leaving an aftertaste that's tight on the palate.

M- Once again, tight and a bit dry. Medium carbonation and a balanced body.

O- First beer I've ever had from these guys. Had never heard of them until they got added to the "Brewery Direct" program at my local Total Wine & More. Not the best IPA I've ever had, but I don't regret the purchase since it was only $4.99 for a 22 oz. bottle.

Clear dark amber colored beer with a small white colored head. This is so dark it is quite close to brown.

Complex smell. Sweet and fruity and I had a hard time identifying it, the smell of Passion Fruit. Little bit of a tobacco aroma here. Little bit of grapefruit but not much, this is a tropical scented IPA.

Starts out sweet and woody with a sharp bitter finish. One of the sweeter IPAs. Tastes of tea and wood and bitterness.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall a disappointment. Smells great tastes weak.
