Knee Deep Brewing Co.
Hoptologist

LOOK: pours a clear orange color with a off white head and rings of lacework.

SMELL: Intense grapefruit notes and a bit of sappy caramel. Earthy hop signature.

TASTE: Strong resinous bitterness, citrus rind and boozy alcohol. Finishes bitter with a sticky hop flavor. Fairly dank and herbal, with hemp oil and pine notes. Caramel note from the malt.

FEEL: Full bodied, strong flavored, and well carbonated. Has a drying hop bite that adds to the enjoyment of this beer.

OVERALL: This is a good Double IpA because the malt body balances well and the hops taste good. Any lover of hops can appreciate this beer when fresh.

Pours into an impy nonic a clear medium golden with a tightly formed half finger white head that left a small mount of lace as it settled, good clarity to the pour.Sweet alcohol and big citrus fruits in the nose,it smells menacing. It's big and sweet on the palate but the citric hops cut thru it and make for a big balanced brew, the IBU's are no joke but either is the boozy sweet alcoholic base. This is something to finish the night off,it's big in all aspects,it's all 4'ers here.

Poured out of a bomber into a snifter. A nice clear/dark copper color with a 1 finger head, Mosty medium to large bubbles, that rapidly diminishes. Immediately the aroma is apparent on the hops and piney scent, with a fruity strawberry nose and sweet smell. Lacing is spotty and lacks the rings I am use to seeing in a quality brew. Taste is smooth upfront with a not much bite for a DIPA. I get a little smokeyness in the middle of the taste profile. The mouthfeel has moderate bite from the hops, well balanced semi-sweet carmel tones. Carbonation is light and the finish is smooth and definately on the dry side. Overall, been wanting to try this one since it beat over Pliny(e)in the SF beer taste competition 2012. It has potential for sticking around after the ipa" hopcraze" due to its drinkability and balance at 9.0%.

The Beers of California

#43

Bottled Date: None

A: Golden copper orange with faint sediment and a bone white finger of head which fades to minimal bubble leftovers.

S: Fresh spring, grass, sunshine, and pine needles. There is citrus fruit, pineapple, honey, and cane sugar. The background is caramel and bread. Some spice also, but the fresh hops singe the nose.

T: Big and spicy hop wallop which fades to a glimmer of sugary, bready maltiness. The citrus, pine, and grass come through between the spice. The pineapple and honey notes are faint but present. The finish is warm and with a peppercorn spice which never gives way throughout the whole palate.

M: Oily linger with good feel and matching carbonation. Full and smooth with good drinkability.

O: A great DIPA which sports 102 IBU's and keeps some fruit complexity. Knee Deep is a young brewery that is making some wonderful ales. I was able to pick up a couple of there offerings from a Northern California BevMo and hope to continue to experience new and exciting Knee Deep brews.

Bottle (2013)

Thanks for sharing this with me, Nathan!

Another decent, drinkable IPA from Knee Deep, but nothing special, especially considering what other locals brewers are doing with hoppy beers these days. Some leafy and herbal hop flavors, moderate bitterness, and mild citrus combine well enough. Well crafted, but unexciting and an average San Diego IPA--which is probably still better than most across the country.

A delicious ,bitter-smooth, hit-the-spot, relaxing brew. The aroma of hops emanates from its bottle's nozzle, and its taste is inviting and pleasant. After its over, the taste lingers on the tastes buds with a good after taste. It is a beer to remember and to try again.

Pours a solid copper color with orange, nice 1" head to it, looks the part. Aroma was more sweet and bitter than hoppy, but the hoppyesque flavors imparted leaned towards citrus of a grapefruit, orange and tangerine nature.

Taste of sweet bitterness and butter. Makes you wonder if aged hops were thrown in a bag of microwave popcorn and sprinkled with sugar. The paper flavor of the bag also seems to have come along for the ride. It just keeps on going on and on in the mouthfeel the entire time. A few notes commensurate with a decent flavor profile for a chardonnay, but I just don't jive with butter and paper/cardboard flavors in any beer, even if they are like in this beer, small and nuanced, they don't lend positive feelings to the beer as a whole.

On the positive side, at 9% alcohol, I didn't really pick that up, so this beer is pretty good at hiding the alcohol.

Poured a gorgeous clear copper with a fluffy finger and a half of white head. As the head recedes it leaves stick lacing down the glass. An excellent look for a DIPA. Scents of citrus, grapefruit pith, pineapple, tropical fruit and peach. An excellent, enticing, lovely smelling scent. Flavor begins with a bit of caramel malt and a big hit of hop bitterness. There is a bit of grapefruit pith, some herbal and floral flavors, and some pine. Finish is resinous and bitter, with some malt sweetness, with a very bitter aftertaste. There is a bit of alcohol warmth throughout and the sweetness is present throughout the sip. A very nice, balanced DIPA that combines sweetness with intense bitterness quite nicely. The hop flavors are also complex, running a gamut of different flavors. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and sticky with low carbonation. Quite easy to drink because of this. This is a good DIPA, it's balanced between bitter hop flavors and sweetness. It's quite easy to drink and well worth trying.
