Simtra Triple IPA delivers a punch in the face with its very danky hop aroma derived from Simcoe and Citra hops. You wanted more hops you got them.

Bottled on 1/16/14. Consumed on 3/2/14. I guess it's not as fresh as the brewer hopes I could drink this, so I'll keep that in mind with this one.

A - Pours a fairly dark yet clear amber, one finger of slightly off-white head and little sticky patches of lacing.

S - Woodsy, resiny, raisiny, and boozy, backed up by some bright floral notes.

T - Phew...this one's a toughie. It's very VERY resiny and almost whiskey-like on the taste, with only a bit of citrus. I probably should have popped this one the moment I got it. It's pretty boozy and bracing at this point. If that's your jam, then cool. But it looks like this DIPA's quality goes downhill fast.

M - Light on the mouthfeel and good carbonation make it feel almost floaty on the tongue.

overall - I hate to dock points reviewing a beer that's likely past its prime, but its prime is a dangerously tiny window that seems to highlight the risks of making big, bold DIPA's. Will have to try and get an even fresher bottle and drink it right away for comparison, but as it stands, this one is way too harsh to go toe-to-toe with the current DIPA heavyweights. (1,120 characters)

Pours a menacing looking murky burnt orange color with a thinner but sticky white head atop.Tropical fruits and pine resin to go with big sweet alcohol in the nose, again menacing is a good adjective to use here.A blast of sharp grapefruit rind and resinous hops really hit home on the palate before the sweetness from the alcohol hits in the finish, the sweetness is big but the hops are just full on assault,I pick up maybe some hard water as well.Wow this is a beast but it's bad ass I love it,Good to see the "high end" Knee Deep stuff here now in North Carolina. (565 characters)

Sweet jebus, this is a great beer.
The nose, the palate...

Hoppy but not nauseating astringent.
Great sweetness along with high ABV.
This should be a sipper, but nope, half a bomber was gone in 30 min.

Is it the new Pliny? Idunno...Pliny's well balanced. this is more emphatic, more resinous, thicker in the palate. But I like it more than Pliny.

Yes, call me a sinner. (372 characters)

Golden amber liquid with a white head that leaves a nice decoration on the glass. Thin covering not top. Big healthy malt backbone with light caramel, sugary dough, a clean light yeast bodied fruitiness. Some pepper wrapped alcohol. Taste is darn near perfect. A malt construct that is bready and sweet. Caramel and crystal malt blend to create a sweet platform that launches the ginormous hop barrage. Pine and citrus abound. Hop resin and oil coat the mouth. Finish is sharp and oily. Kind of longish with a minty flourish. Feel is full with a mild cream touch. An exceptional beer, how can the booze be this well hidden? A great thirst quencher and all day sipper. (668 characters)

64 oz growler poured into a pub-style pine glass.

Appearance
Golden-yellow with 1 finger of loose, off-white head that dissipates quickly. Good clarity with light carbonation.

Nose
Candied orange, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon, pine, and candy sugar.

Taste
Pine sap, pineapple, dank greens, and bright florals. Candied orange, grapefruit zest, and lemon pith. Candy sugar backbone with suggestions of caramel. Lingering notes of pine needle and zest. A good punch of bitterness hits the back end.

Mouthfeel
Medium-plus bodied, oily, smooth, semi-dry and moderately bitter.

Overall
Hot damn, the 11.25% abv is hidden well! Very west coast, very dank, very good. This is up there with the best of them. (704 characters)

Just excellent. For an ABV this high, you would expect a lot more undesired sweetness. Not the case. Very well balanced. Too bad it costs north of $10/btl. (155 characters)

Excellent beer! I've had Pliny the Elder on tap at Russian River and this is as close to that as I've had. Light amber color and thin head with some nice lacing on the glass. Strong initial taste with a smooth finish. 11.25 abv!! Overall a great beer! Expensive but worth every penny. (285 characters)

A - Pours clear orange with golden brown and essentially no head.

S - Very nice aroma. Lots of citrus and resninous hops , and lots of tropical fruit. Surprisingly, not much booze in the aroma, though it does come in more with succesive whiffs.

T - Quite a bit of pine in the taste, that I did not get from the aroma, along with lots of citrus and tropical fruits. Nice bitterness throughout. Some juicy citrus as well as bitter. Some booze is apparent, but not distracting. Definitely the least malty "triple" IPA I've had, which is a good thing.

M - Medium mouthfeel with a nice resiny bitterness.

O - Very nice flavors with the malts kept in check. Some numbing/warming alcohol, but surprisingly kept in check for such a big beer. Wouldn't drink this everyday, but I'd have it again. (791 characters)
