Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass

A...pours a somewhat cloudy, new penny copper color with a 1" head that recedes quickly into a fine layer that has a heavy ring with big bubbles around the edge. Lacing is like a curtain around the whole glass that has some legs from the alcohol.

S...whoa!!! It smells so good at the first sniff, I had to set it back down, walk away and come back for a new whiff. A perfect smell to an ipa lover. At first a floral boquet. Second sniff brings out deep pine resin notes, really very nice. Wow, I want to breathe this beer in instead of drinking it.

T...hop bitterness right up front. Very complex in this dept. Noticeable sweetness as expected with this type of brew but fortunately, not too sweet. The malts are there and give you some caramel and even a little brown sugar but the hops are the main act for sure...well done.

M...nice, maybe a bit under carbonated but I'm not complaining. Feels slick in the mouth but not watery. Definately a mid-full body.

O...I've waited to buy this beer for a while. $11 for a 22oz ain't cheap. I thought it might not live up to my own build up but it did. This is a fantastic brew. I will absolutely buy it again when I feel like I deserve something special. Buy this when you feel like you deserve champagne but you want to drink something you like instead. Does not disappoint. I feel like thanking the brewer.

Pours a menacing looking murky burnt orange color with a thinner but sticky white head atop.Tropical fruits and pine resin to go with big sweet alcohol in the nose, again menacing is a good adjective to use here.A blast of sharp grapefruit rind and resinous hops really hit home on the palate before the sweetness from the alcohol hits in the finish, the sweetness is big but the hops are just full on assault,I pick up maybe some hard water as well.Wow this is a beast but it's bad ass I love it,Good to see the "high end" Knee Deep stuff here now in North Carolina.

Sweet jebus, this is a great beer.
The nose, the palate...

Hoppy but not nauseating astringent.
Great sweetness along with high ABV.
This should be a sipper, but nope, half a bomber was gone in 30 min.

Is it the new Pliny? Idunno...Pliny's well balanced. this is more emphatic, more resinous, thicker in the palate. But I like it more than Pliny.

Yes, call me a sinner.

A - Pours clear orange with golden brown and essentially no head.

S - Very nice aroma. Lots of citrus and resninous hops , and lots of tropical fruit. Surprisingly, not much booze in the aroma, though it does come in more with succesive whiffs.

T - Quite a bit of pine in the taste, that I did not get from the aroma, along with lots of citrus and tropical fruits. Nice bitterness throughout. Some juicy citrus as well as bitter. Some booze is apparent, but not distracting. Definitely the least malty "triple" IPA I've had, which is a good thing.

M - Medium mouthfeel with a nice resiny bitterness.

O - Very nice flavors with the malts kept in check. Some numbing/warming alcohol, but surprisingly kept in check for such a big beer. Wouldn't drink this everyday, but I'd have it again.

light orange/golden color poured into an American pint glass. pours a nice head two fingers thick with good retention. smells of pine and weed; takes a concerted effort to pick out notes of citrus. taste is a hop massacre destroying any semblance of malt. hop profile not too bitter considering the style but the singular note begs for complexity. lingering spicy finish more annoying than desirable.

The Beers of California

#38

Bottled Date: None

A: Copper with mahogony and cherry wood hues with a bone white head which fades to faint bed of foam which sits a top this brew.

S: So fresh and bright with awesome tropical notes of pineapple and mango along with a strong citrus aroma of tangerine, grapefruit, and orange. There is a background of earth which provides foundation to the nose with highlights of cane sugar and caramel.

T: A hop wallop of pineapple, lychee and mango. When the tropical notes subside then come the tangerines intertwined with grapefruit, orange zest and peach. The fruit is grounded on an earthiness which has notes of pine needles, soil and freshly cut grass. A skeleton of warm bread, cane sugar, and caramel does its best to support the hoppiness of this brew. The finish is bitter with a nice spiciness with some faint warming alcohol.

M: Enough carbonation to keep the palate activated with nice hop oil linger pinned on a medium body and feel.

O: Rivaling Pliny, this surprising brew, being my first offering from Knee Deep, does a wonderful job showcasing the beauty of hops. I especially love the Citra hops in this brew and can't wait to get my hands on another bomber of this wonderful Triple IPA from Knee Deep.

Great flavor and an aroma that assaults you (in a good way) from a distance. You can tell the grain bill here is simple, and a lot of the background complexity and mouthfeel come from the huge alcohol.

Unfortunately, I have to ding this one for drinkability. Unlike Pliny the Younger, the bitterness and residual sugar/alcohol are not quite balanced. It punches you in the face with every sip. A 10 ounce sample took me 20 minutes to drink and while it tasted great, I couldn't imagine drinking a second one. Contrast with Younger, which is downright quaffable despite the IBUs and alcohol.
