A: Lovely looking IPA. Deep bronze with a reddish tint. Orange/copper. White head wasn't too dense but thins nicely. Good looking, fine bubble carbonation.

S: WOW. Hops field. A big hint of what is to come. Super floral aroma hops and maple syrup smelling roast on the malts.

T: Bottle says 131 IBU but I don't believe it up front. The 11.25% ABV has a little palate presence. It's got that classic resinous/pine bitterness to it but it's well balanced. Easy drinking for a beer with this much flavor. They definitely were not stingy with the hops (Simcoe?) The citrus notes are grapefruit forward. Wonderful flavor. Scant sweetness. Mine isn't even as fresh as it should be.

M: Hefty and filling. Carbonation is perfect. Great example of the style, but I feel like it's making me thirsty for water.

O: Great beer for fans of IPA, and torture for everyone else.

Amber colored with decent head retention and lacing for its strength. Dank, pungent aroma thick with green, spicy hops, herbs, scallions, butterscotch, mango, passion fruit, and toffee. A big hoppy burst greets the senses right away, followed by a substantial toasted malt backing. Honey, grapefruit, mango, resin, and caramel. Boozy alcohol smothered by bitterness, malty sweet under the hops, and warming…American Barleywine territory. Not a great finish – a little too hot and sticky. Rather heavy, textured, and bitter. That, in addition to being somewhat under-carbonated hurts the drinkability. Oh boy…I really wanted to like this one, but it’s just too sticky and brash to be all that enjoyable. Not bad, just disappointing and overrated.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Pint mug
From: Windmill Farms in Del Cerro (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $10.99
Purchased: July 10, 2014
Consumed: July 18, 2014
Misc.: Born on May 20, 2014

Poured a honey, caramel, semi-clear color with two fingers of rocky white head. Sporadic spider web foamy lacing along the sides of the glass. Above average retention on the top all the way down.

Smelled a plethora of hops up front. Got grapefruit, citrus, Cascade, floral, orange rind and light resin. Also some rye, caramel and orange creamscickle.

Tasted pretty close to the smell. Got citrus hops, Cascade hops, orange creamscickle, floral hops, grapefruit, nectarine and caramel. Some bitterness, but the 11.25 percent ABV felt about 7 percent.

Medium-to-light body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, slightly bitter finish.

Just a fantastic double IPA. I’ve wanted to try it for a while and I’m glad I finally did.

Poured into a Dogfish Spiegelau glass. Label says 06/13/14

A- What the hell? Pours a murky very dark amber that's on the edge of being light brown with a 1/4 inch off-white head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a bubbly side patch of surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves a thick ring behind.

S- Nice duality of citrusy hops and sweet, slightly toasty malt.

T- The flavor mirrors the aroma but is even more impressive as the hop/malt ratio is pretty much perfect and the alcohol is insanely well hidden. Definitely a sipper as the bitterness lingers and you do start feeling the heat after multiple sips but it tastes great, even as it warms. Earthy and piney with a candy-like caramel finish. Zesty, yet peppery. Sweet but has just enough bitterness to round out the flavor profile.

M- Oily and slightly sharp from the hops with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- Now this is a "Triple IPA" I can get behind. There are certainly some barleywine characteristics here but it fits within the flavor profile of an IPA more than any other "Triple IPA" I've had thus far. So unique and completely different from what I was expecting. For instance, I didn't realize it would be quite this drinkable. Be careful with this one. The more I drink this, the more I realize it's the perfect hi-octane IPA for me.

Bottled 5/23/14 and pulled off a room temp shelf at bevmo in N California on a road trip. A - deep amber much darker than the only other TIPA I've tasted Boneyard Notorious. 1 finger off white head with good retention and lacing through the entire glass. N - little grassy but mostly toffee, caramel. T - caramel, toffee, orange, an odd peppery taste with a lot of alcohol heat on the finish. M - nice sparkling light oily mouthfeel. Full body. O - not at all what was expected. No dank citrus. Slight grassiness and some orange zest were the only hop characteristics detected. A good barley wine reminiscent of stone 2013 old guardian is the only thing I can compare it too. My first lesson in big box beer outlet buying. Don't buy TIPAs off the room temp racks but I just had to try it. Would love a properly stored bottle to compare this to.
