Pours orange gold with a thin head, as expected for the abv, with decent lacing. Smells of citrus/orange/tangerine, pine sap, sweet alcohol, woodsy, slightly earthy and biscuity. The nose also describes the flavor, and everything feels, tastes right in terms of how the beer comes across: this is a BIG Double IPA and expertly features the wonderful simcoe and citra hops in an upfront fruity and earthy attack on the senses with a pleasing level of bitterness; there is a slight malt backbone of biscuit and slight alcohol presence, and while you know it's there, it hides shockingly well, considering what a hoppy beer with a dry finish this is. This is NOT a malty IPA and is very well done for this style - one of the finest I've had.

Bottled 12/22/13

A: Three fingers of fine white billowy head was formed in the English style pub glass when poured from the bottle. Great retention. When it did fall a small amount of lacing was left behind. The beer is a gold color with a small haze, but overall pretty standard looking IPA, but with legs.

S: Huge tropical fruit nose, wow. Passion fruit, kiwi, pineapple peaches with an undertone of strawberries. Almost no malt detected, very clean and bright. Alcohol noticed when the beer sat for a few minutes and off gassed the hop aroma.

T: Bright and bold hop bitterness flavor off the bat, the flavor reminds me of fruit juice. Tropical fruit hop flavors similar to the aroma, kiwi passion fruit, mangos, peaches. The malt flavor is very low only a slight toast character.

M: Big alcohol warming (good in my opinion since it drinks like the fruit juice it tastes like) Very dry and light bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: The name serves it justice, Citra and Simcoe are the flavors coming through, but the Citra is dominant. The gravity on this beast is deceiving and I would love a lower example to make it more sessionable, but a nice beer either way. Share it with your favorite hop head and you’ll be appreciated.

Bottled on 1/16/14. Consumed on 3/2/14. I guess it's not as fresh as the brewer hopes I could drink this, so I'll keep that in mind with this one.

A - Pours a fairly dark yet clear amber, one finger of slightly off-white head and little sticky patches of lacing.

S - Woodsy, resiny, raisiny, and boozy, backed up by some bright floral notes.

T - Phew...this one's a toughie. It's very VERY resiny and almost whiskey-like on the taste, with only a bit of citrus. I probably should have popped this one the moment I got it. It's pretty boozy and bracing at this point. If that's your jam, then cool. But it looks like this DIPA's quality goes downhill fast.

M - Light on the mouthfeel and good carbonation make it feel almost floaty on the tongue.

overall - I hate to dock points reviewing a beer that's likely past its prime, but its prime is a dangerously tiny window that seems to highlight the risks of making big, bold DIPA's. Will have to try and get an even fresher bottle and drink it right away for comparison, but as it stands, this one is way too harsh to go toe-to-toe with the current DIPA heavyweights.
