While a bit boozy (the abv. is 11.3% after all), the beer delivers plenty of dry citrus, light onion, considerable pine and hoppy goodness. Also, while there's a considerable malt presence, there's more than enough bitterness to counter the sweetness in this beer, and ultimately the finish was long, dry and bitter.

Wish the abv. wasn't quite so high, but otherwise, this is a pretty impressive DIPA. (405 characters)

Love this brewery but the concept for this beer of using only Chinook and Centennial hops because they are the most ubiquitous is not exciting me. These are my least favorite hops. Let's see how the triple IPA shakes out though.

Appearance: dark pale, straw color. Quite a lot of foam. I should mention this was bottled March 31 so is a little over 2 months old.

Smell: very pronounced Chinook and Centennial aroma. Piney with milder notes of spice, lemon and grapefruit.

Taste: tastes like a triple IPA of Two Hearted. Not a bad thing. Resiny pine is the main flavor. There are some subtle influences of general floral notes, grapefruit rind, earthy grass and finishes with a lot of booziness. I don't mind some boozy alcohol heat but I can understand this can be a turn off for some. Good malt backbone breaks through in middle and finish after the hop bitterness overload up front. Malt tastes of dry, white cracker.

Overall: I think this is the best you can do with these classic yet these days boring hop varieties. They just don't bring a lot of interesting complexity to the table. Even still this is a fine beer. The best beer comparison I can make is if you put a Bell's Two Hearted on steroids and upped it to double or triple IPA level this is what you'd get. (1,278 characters)

L: Pours brilliant deep amber under a 2” cream colored foam collar that grips the side of the glass.
S: Citrus nose blended with fresh mown grass.
T: Deep malt profile supports and balances lemon, orange and grapefruit rind bitterness and fresh fruit flavors.
F: Creamy medium full body, medium to low carbonation, soft and fine.
O: Big hop loaded Imperial IPA with a balancing malt profile. (397 characters)

A: Poured from the bomber into a Beer Sommelier glass. Body is bright orange with a small white head.

S: Like a DIPA - loads of both caramel malt and hops.

T: Leans towards the sweet side of things, with a heavy base of caramel malt and even brown sugar, which is followed by the hops: apricot, candied oranges and a touch of grapefruit pith. Hint of leafy hops as well - grassy, perhaps piney. Alcohol spice is noted in the finish and warmth is felt down the gulley. Nice burps, with brown sugar and grapefruit.

M: Thick in heft, nearly syrupy but not quite.

O: Good. It's been awhile since I've tasted a DIPA like this one. It reminds me of Middle Ages X Anniversary, though after awhile I began thinking of hoppy American Barleywines, a la SN Bigfoot. The friend with whom I shared the bomber had similar thoughts. (823 characters)

Really alcoholic initial taste, then the huge amount of hops hit with alittle bit of malt and sweetness. It's like a sweeter and maltier stone enjoy by ipa. Also, not worth the $11 I spent (188 characters)

Clear amber color with a good head with good retention.
Fruity aroma with notes of apples and lots of caramels and pineapples. Somewhat different on a nice way.
Quite resiny flavor with notes of spices, lots of pines, piñacolada, bread and butter, grapefruit sweet concentrate and orange marmalade. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Medium to full body with appropriate carbonation. Alcohol of 11.3% is in harmony with the beer.
A fruity and resiny DIPA. It is also a good sipper; you definitely can drink this at room temperature. Very rounded and interesting. (556 characters)

Off-white level foam, copper body, excellent clarity.

Aroma has a truck load of caramel. Some candy sugar.

Huge sweet malt foundation. A produce department of fruit. Bitter snap at swallow, that grows exponentially in the afterglow.

Smooth, slick, thick mouthfeel.

Not the equal of Ruination, but following in its footsteps. I could have this again. (354 characters)

From 10/13/14 notes. On tap at Ginger Man in NYC.

Pours a somewhat clear golden-yellow color with one inch of off white head and moderate carbonation. Citrus hops, pine hops, floral hops, sweet candy and fruits, bread, and earthy notes. Medium body and low carbonation, light bitter bite to it.

Overall a nice DIPA. Not too bitter for the bite, some definite nice hops up front with malts in the back. Not my favorite KD beer but worth checking out. (451 characters)

In a nonic pint.

A- Copper-colored and hazy-looking in the body. Creamy, frothy, cream-colored head. 4

S- Resinous, piney, pineapple juice, vanilla and caramel malts. Huge amounts of fruitiness on the nose. Pretty lovely. 4.25

T- Continued fruit flavor, pineapple and passionfruit, along with a spicy hop flavor and creamy caramel malt. 4.25

M- Spicy and well-carbonated resulting in a colorful feel on the tongue. The bitterness is spread throughout and thus mellowed and the finish is dry and just a tad boozy. 4

A tasty brew with big fruit flavors, mellow bitterness and the booze subdued. Definitely enjoyable. (619 characters)

This is sad. Overly bitter, alcohol in excess and a bad after taste. Imagine golden drak that's bitter with an after taste of floor cleaner. If that's your thing. Only second beer I have ever poured out. Maybe I got a bad bottle and will need to try again to confirm. Until then, two is a gift. (294 characters)

these just hit town, and fresh is best...enjoyed from a beer hunter session glass.

brew pours rich, but transparent orange amber, thin foamy top that didn't hang out, left patches of lace on the glass.
nose is the highlight. rich ripe tropical fruit. squishy resinous grapefruit. some alc sweetness at the tail.
BOOM. slap in the face with a dense resinous, yet fruity hop. grapefruity pine, fresh ripe tropical fruit.
mouth is fairly full. big and chewy. you can feel the heat and it leaves a tingle.
really nice and fresh resinous, but still fruity and not just a bitter bomb. worth checking out. (607 characters)

A: medium amber and clear, couple of fingers-worth of pale tan head; some lace down the glass

S: bright citrus and flowers, some sweet chewy grain beneath

T: crisp and tight - lotsa of pale fruit and hop flower, subtle malts underscore

M: tight and tingly, some edge from the alcohol and the hops, medium-light body, ample carbonation

O: another nice DIPA and another real good brew from Knee Deep - fans of pales, IPAs, DIPAs and the lot would be well-advised to grab a bottle at some point. (497 characters)

Pours golden/orange, medium head.

Smell of pine is very strong, some citrus.

Taste is off the charts, lots of bitterness but balanced well with citrus. A little boozey on the finish. Very fresh and surprisingly refreshing for a TIPA with 11%.

If you love strong IPAs, with tons of booze and citrus bitterness this is it. Doesn't get much better than Hop Shortage. Tastes even better from the taproom! This beer is slightly better than Simtra in my opinion, seems more balanced. (484 characters)

Bottle into a pint glass
A. Clouded orange with. Finger of foamy off white head.
S. Malty alcohol and with spicy hop resin. Just poor aroma.
T. Diacetyl is huge in this beer , huge alcohol burn, abrasive spicy hop resin burnt caramel. Massive bitterness.
M. Super sticky chewy abrasive with tons of burn.
O. I quit with knee deep after this. I was so excited when I found this along with hoptologist and simtra. All three are horrible, this being the worst. Diacetyl alcohol malt hop burn.Gross (495 characters)

Excellent doubleIPA. Big citrus, floral characters from the Centennial and Chinook hops.

I get a big alcohol feel, and the biscuit taste that many talked about does come through. Overall a big IPA. Just the way it should be. Very complex in the flavors associated with this Double IPA. (286 characters)

A - A slightly cloudy looking gold with an almost limey hue to it--small head with only a small amount of lingering lacing
S - Faint piney hops rounded out by citrus and sweet malt--a little bit of lemon zest and orange
T - Very similar to the smell--strong citrus in the front end undercut by a hoppy, semi-bitter note and biscuity malt. The flavor lingers (in a nice way). More balanced on the backend than the front. Very drinkable.
M - Very well carbonated--just bubbly enough to suit the style without being distracting
O - This is a very solid beer. I prefer this to the Hoptologist series. (596 characters)

Bottled 7/4/13 no hints of age drinks super hoppy. Imperial pint glass full of this liquid glory is a happy one, pours deep copper slightly hazed with hop proteins, full thicket of cream head. Aroma is full of dank hops, including tropical fruit notes, big citrus and grapefruit tones, with pine and herbs. Drinks satisfyingly smooth for such a big beer, the 11.3% abv provides a decent alcohol burn and the malts here bring candied coated hops to mind, very big intense flavors not for the beginner in the realm of hops. This beer coats the palate with honey coated hops and big layers of bitterness and hop flavors, citrus mango and pine needles with a hint of herbal fresh mint leaves. Very tasty, the mouthfeel is big bodied with resinous hop oils, leaves the bitterness on the palate, but the carbonation level is so smooth it adds a bit of creaminess to the texture. It's like a hop milkshake, overall I'm a fan my first go round with Knee Deep definitely worth seeking out some of this big bad triple IPA. (1,012 characters)

Thanks to Skye for this one!
7/13/13 printed on the label.

Pours a dark orange, with a fluffy cap of foam on top. Some delicate lacing an good surface coverage, thin veil remains on the surface. Clarity is actually fairly high, when in the light you can see right through it.

Pungent citrus aroma, candied orange peel, spicy arugula, light malt sweetness.

Bitter greens, dandelion, orange peels, grapefruit pulp, caramel malt breadiness. Bitterness is up there, lingering well into the aftertaste.Full bodied and pretty strong, though the alcohol is pretty well hidden. Dry and very bitter aftertaste. Overall a pretty big beast, though it's flavorful and packs a big hop punch. (684 characters)

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: Pours a clear amber color capped by a rocky head that leaves many strands of lacing behind

Smell: Resinous hops dominate though there is a grassy element as well; the high ABV is discerbable as are the caramel malts

Taste: Starts out biscuity but then the caramel builds, though just for a moment as the hops overwhelm almost from the outset; resinous, though there is a range of tropical fruit (papaya, grapefruit and a touch of mango) as well as a grassy element on the finish; still, with all the malt in this beer there is considerable malty sweetness that lingers in the aftertaste, though the beer is really very bitter

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: A real West Coast hop bomb with a considerable amount of malt to create the high ABV; my preference is to keep the hops and dispense with the malt at these levels but this is still quite good (891 characters)

If extreme IPAs are your thing, you'll most likely be excited about this one. If you're not into IPAs, this is a pretty extreme beer. It's very bitter, and extremely hop forward and not at all subtle. The fact that it has high alcohol content as well really gives it a punch, although the alchohol is not obvious, it's well disguised under the extreme hoppiness.

I think Stone Ruination is my bar against which I compare other extreme IPAs, and this one being triple hopped is definitely in the extreme category. Whereas Ruination has the balance of overthetop hoppiness and bitterness very well balanced (perfected?), I think Hop Shortage has gone a step too far. Given the choice between Ruination or Hop Shortage I think I'd pick Ruination.

A: light amber, clear. Slightly foamy head, settles to very thin, white head

S: extreme citrus, pine, warmer notes, spiciness like cloves

T: very bitter, hops hit you hard, subsides to subtler biscuit flavors

M: the sharpness almost feels like its burning your mouth. alcohol warms and tingles your mouth, leaves mouth tingling for several seconds after you swallow

overall: I want to like this one, but I'm in two minds whether it's great, or has it gone too far? (1,214 characters)

first off the only reason i didnt rate this as a 5 is because its not as good as their Simtra

a: golden amber and clear

s: resiny citrusy piney hops

t: at first u can feel and taste hop oil coat your mouth. then a thick chewy piney flavor
and hints of lime citrus and peaches. finishes with a bit of spice and a bit of citrus.

m: at first airy but then oil coats your mouth followed but last bit of small carbonation

overall its an amazing triple ipa. at 11.3% its amazing that it isnt boozy at all. also a great go to beer (532 characters)
