Excellent doubleIPA. Big citrus, floral characters from the Centennial and Chinook hops.

I get a big alcohol feel, and the biscuit taste that many talked about does come through. Overall a big IPA. Just the way it should be. Very complex in the flavors associated with this Double IPA.

A - A slightly cloudy looking gold with an almost limey hue to it--small head with only a small amount of lingering lacing
S - Faint piney hops rounded out by citrus and sweet malt--a little bit of lemon zest and orange
T - Very similar to the smell--strong citrus in the front end undercut by a hoppy, semi-bitter note and biscuity malt. The flavor lingers (in a nice way). More balanced on the backend than the front. Very drinkable.
M - Very well carbonated--just bubbly enough to suit the style without being distracting
O - This is a very solid beer. I prefer this to the Hoptologist series.

holy crap! 11.3% why didn't somebody tell me that before I popped the cap?!!? i'm already tweaked. darn flexorils. I had no idea...
anyway . . . . nice brightly colored brew, soapy-white lace, smells sweet and caramel-y, with some brown sugar . . . . very sweet aroma....
taste is . . . . bitter first, candy last. really! very bitter, and very candy-like in the finish. very interesting brew.

Bottled 7/4/13 no hints of age drinks super hoppy. Imperial pint glass full of this liquid glory is a happy one, pours deep copper slightly hazed with hop proteins, full thicket of cream head. Aroma is full of dank hops, including tropical fruit notes, big citrus and grapefruit tones, with pine and herbs. Drinks satisfyingly smooth for such a big beer, the 11.3% abv provides a decent alcohol burn and the malts here bring candied coated hops to mind, very big intense flavors not for the beginner in the realm of hops. This beer coats the palate with honey coated hops and big layers of bitterness and hop flavors, citrus mango and pine needles with a hint of herbal fresh mint leaves. Very tasty, the mouthfeel is big bodied with resinous hop oils, leaves the bitterness on the palate, but the carbonation level is so smooth it adds a bit of creaminess to the texture. It's like a hop milkshake, overall I'm a fan my first go round with Knee Deep definitely worth seeking out some of this big bad triple IPA.

Thanks to Skye for this one!
7/13/13 printed on the label.

Pours a dark orange, with a fluffy cap of foam on top. Some delicate lacing an good surface coverage, thin veil remains on the surface. Clarity is actually fairly high, when in the light you can see right through it.

Pungent citrus aroma, candied orange peel, spicy arugula, light malt sweetness.

Bitter greens, dandelion, orange peels, grapefruit pulp, caramel malt breadiness. Bitterness is up there, lingering well into the aftertaste.Full bodied and pretty strong, though the alcohol is pretty well hidden. Dry and very bitter aftertaste. Overall a pretty big beast, though it's flavorful and packs a big hop punch.

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: Pours a clear amber color capped by a rocky head that leaves many strands of lacing behind

Smell: Resinous hops dominate though there is a grassy element as well; the high ABV is discerbable as are the caramel malts

Taste: Starts out biscuity but then the caramel builds, though just for a moment as the hops overwhelm almost from the outset; resinous, though there is a range of tropical fruit (papaya, grapefruit and a touch of mango) as well as a grassy element on the finish; still, with all the malt in this beer there is considerable malty sweetness that lingers in the aftertaste, though the beer is really very bitter

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: A real West Coast hop bomb with a considerable amount of malt to create the high ABV; my preference is to keep the hops and dispense with the malt at these levels but this is still quite good

If extreme IPAs are your thing, you'll most likely be excited about this one. If you're not into IPAs, this is a pretty extreme beer. It's very bitter, and extremely hop forward and not at all subtle. The fact that it has high alcohol content as well really gives it a punch, although the alchohol is not obvious, it's well disguised under the extreme hoppiness.

I think Stone Ruination is my bar against which I compare other extreme IPAs, and this one being triple hopped is definitely in the extreme category. Whereas Ruination has the balance of overthetop hoppiness and bitterness very well balanced (perfected?), I think Hop Shortage has gone a step too far. Given the choice between Ruination or Hop Shortage I think I'd pick Ruination.

A: light amber, clear. Slightly foamy head, settles to very thin, white head

S: extreme citrus, pine, warmer notes, spiciness like cloves

T: very bitter, hops hit you hard, subsides to subtler biscuit flavors

M: the sharpness almost feels like its burning your mouth. alcohol warms and tingles your mouth, leaves mouth tingling for several seconds after you swallow

overall: I want to like this one, but I'm in two minds whether it's great, or has it gone too far?

first off the only reason i didnt rate this as a 5 is because its not as good as their Simtra

a: golden amber and clear

s: resiny citrusy piney hops

t: at first u can feel and taste hop oil coat your mouth. then a thick chewy piney flavor
and hints of lime citrus and peaches. finishes with a bit of spice and a bit of citrus.

m: at first airy but then oil coats your mouth followed but last bit of small carbonation

overall its an amazing triple ipa. at 11.3% its amazing that it isnt boozy at all. also a great go to beer

I got this at my wife's work a few days ago.

Appearance- copper color, nice size head, nice lacing

Smell- citrus hops

Taste- citrus hops, well balanced

Mouthfeel- medium bodied

Drinkability- I thought it was very good. It wasn't the best I have had but it was still very good. I definitely would like to drink it again.

S: Smells citrus with a buttload of hoppigoodness

T: bitter and medium level to drink

A: Dark amber color with lots of carbonation, medium level of foamy head

O: Hop shortage covers up the ABV very well. The hops had a bitter taste that was citrus. This was the first triple IPA that i have tried. It was not as good as Pliny the Elder or Ruination.

Bottle (2013)

Thanks for sharing this with me, Nathan!

A big triple IPA that hides the alcohol fairly well with decent amount of bitterness but a lot of sweet malt character as well. Drinkable, and perhaps I'd try a glass on-tap, but once was enough for me as far as bottles go. The hops do lean toward a passion/citrus fruit arena though. Definitely worth trying, but not a world-beater.

Bomber from a trade on 05/15/13 w/ a bottling date of 03/15/13 had in a Burley Oak tulip

A: A very hazy dirty blonde with ok lacing. Minimal head.

S: I get a lot of nice citrus notes here. It is nice but not too strong of a smell.

T: Lots of boozy alcohol with the pine only coming through on the tail end and in the aftertaste. Not a sharp alcohol burn, but a kind of mild steady presence, which taints the hop profile and covers a lot of it up. An odd malty pine resin aftertaste that is kind of dulled due to alcohol burn bit.

M: It is quite crisp with a ring of coarse bubbles in it. Crisp and coarse if you keep it in your mouth.

O: I will have trouble finishing this beer. It was an extra in my first trade, so I can't complain. I was worried that my waiting a month from when I got it to open it would make it be bad, but not with this high ABV. There is no alcohol shortage here.

I had heard this beer was somewhat close to Pliny the Younger. I won't believe it till I taste for myself.

Appearance: Nice orangy/copper color. Decent lacing!

Aroma: very west coast IPA. Huge resin notes, some tropical fruit but more resin as it warms up.

Taste: very similar to aroma, I can feel the heat but it is not cloying!

Mouthfeel: medium to full body, the alcohol heat makes this beer feel heavier.

Overall: This is a solid IPA, definitely feels stronger than a II IPA. It is not a special beer tho!

Chill hazed clear orange colored brew with a medium sized white head.

Smells sweet with a strong citrus aroma. There is a savory scent here to a little like caramelized onion. There are pine, cedar and cinnamon scent in this too.

Starts out mildly sweet with a sharp hop bite in the back of the throat. Bittersweet with some strong tea and woody flavors. Slight mushroom flavor.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall an OK beer that could be more complex.

22 oz. bomber, bottled 4.30.13, drank 5.6.13,

A: Pours amber with a solid somewhat fizzy white head, solid amount of lace.

S: Lots of grapefruit and greenery, pungent.

T: Pine oil with a lot of citrus and pineapple. Very little malt flavour, this is all about the hops as expected.

M: Full-bodied, resiny, thick. Quite easy drinking for the size.

O: A very good DIPA, though the price is a bit off-putting. Worth a try once for hop fans.

Bottled on 4/23/13
Poured into the Sierra Nevada/Dogfish IPA glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear, pale amber/orange with a white 2 finger head that has decent retention and leaves some spotty lacing.

Aroma; Not nearly as aromatic as a I'd expect from a triple IPA.; sweet orange blossoms, resinous pine, some distant notes of grapefruit. There is an overbearingly sweet malt presence that really bogs the nose down. So sweet in fact, that it actually smells akin to malt extract. No alcohol is present in the nose.

Taste: The beer opens with very pine forward hops with a growing grapefruit presence. Some sweet caramel-y malts cut the initial hop nuances a bit short, but the dry finish leaves the bitter hop oils naked on your palate with lingering notes of resinous pine and grapefruit rind. For 11.3% ABV, the alcohol is remarkably masked and the the little that there is coalesces nicely with the strong and assertive hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, very oily in texture with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Not nearly as explosively hoppy in aromatics and in taste as I'd want a Triple/Double IPA to be. The hop notes that do come across are fairly simple and are left dulled by the overbearing malts. The hops do come across a bit more in the finish, but they of a more oily and resinous nature rather than bright and citrusy. For what it's worth it definitely does go down very easily, a bit too easily in fact, for 11%.

Served from 22 oz bomber with bottled on date of 03/15/13, into Duvel tulip.

Appearance: Pours a clear golden, copper color with about a finger and a half of dense white head the recedes to a thin cap after a few minutes.

Smell: Hop resin, and malty sweetness, a touch of citrus, and a faint earthiness.

Taste: A touch of piney, resinous hop bitterness up front, followed by a massive amount of alcohol, that ends with a piney bitter aftertaste. Just a straight up boozy mess, hardly any hop character when compared to the alcohol bite.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a very nice prickly carbonation.

Overall: Just a boozy mess IMO, lacks any real hop punch, after a few drinks all I can taste is the alcohol.

Taste is disappointing. When you advertise a beer as "Will Work for Hops", I expect a strong hoppy finish. A good brew, but did not deliver on its promise. Weak finish with slightly astringic opening. Bitter taste without the deep floral tones that most highly hopped beers exhibit.

Bottled 02/15/13. Tulip glass.

Pours a medium, orange-tinted gold with a half finger of fluffy pure white head. Smell is light but predominantly caramel, with a little resiny hops and spice. Taste is a little caramel but mostly moderate-high bitterness. More bitter than I enjoy, and hard to detect any hops. Medium-light body and carbonation, this feels great on the palate and the alcohol is very well hidden. Overall, drinkability is just OK, and this is low on flavor.

Wow this is bitter! Incredibly resinous, biting bitter grapefruit oil, and sharp pine smack you in the face. There is a underlying medley of tart pineapple and mango. Aroma is stanky, danky, astringent pineapple, grapefruit peel and pine. A perfect looking unfiltered pale ale - opaque tangerine orange with a high alc looking large bubble white foam head. Feels refreshing, medium body. Overall this is a fantastic, bitter bomb of a 'triple' IPA.

Knee Deep - Hop Shortage - 1pt 6fl oz bottle

Look - Clever bottle. Pours a dark copper/amber with a minimal, bubbly head. Minimal lacing and carbonation. Hazy.

Smell - Hops are present, as well as sweet honey and some citrus.

Taste - Bitey sweet malt intro, wave of sweetness in the middle, driest of the dry hoppy finish. Booze somewhat throughout.

Mouthfeel - Rests like a tough IPA on the sides, a little overly bitter. I'm somewhat reluctant to keep sipping but curiosity killed the cat so I do. Ends quite a bit on the boozy side, which is not surprising considering the strength of this brew. I would say the mouthfeel is the worst aspect of this brew, which is big.

Overall - Not quite sure what to make of this one, I wanted to like it but I'm afraid it's so-so. Less alcohol would be one place to start as it would likely soften the boozy blow at the end and lend more attention to the complex flavor. Oh well, can't love them all!

Picked up a bomber from BevMo last weekend for $9.99. Bottled on 1.15.13...mmm...fresh hops!

Beer poured a clear golden orange with not much head.

Nose is wonderful, fresh citrus and pine abound.

Taste is boozy, with a large malt base finishing with a huge blast of grapefruit and piney hops.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly smooth with some mild carbonatation.

Overall this is a pretty solid beer, definitley a boozy hop bomb. Definitely fun to try, especially when the hops are fresh.

Another imperial ipa from knee deep. I wasn't impressed with Hoptologist but liked Simtra, so let's see where this one falls. Bomber to a snifter, bottled on 1/4/13

Pours a balanced coppery gold with a finer of foam. Really good color on this, right where a dipa should be. Very little carbonation, maybe a single bubble every three or four seconds. Foam has died down a bit, nice froth in the middle with a nice ring around the edges. Good lacing, with a bit longer of a retention time this would have been perfect

Aroma of hops, some spicy resin, lemon and orange zest, along with a subdued alcoholy malt. Some more floral hop and citrus come out as I agitate the glass

Taste is very boozy. Good amount of hops backed up with some sweet malt, but the alcohol is the first thing to stick out and the last thing to leave, not very concealed at all

Feel is full bodied with little carbonation. Good tongue tingle, sticky, nice finish. This isn't something I'd want to have more than a bottle of

This beer could really be a lot better. The alcohol is high and poorly masked with eclipses all the other flavors of the beer. Drop it down a couple percent and add more hoppy citrus. Frankly, this stuff isn't worth $10 a bottle, I'd advise against it if you paid what I did
