Knee Deep’s Batch 138 India Pale Ale is brewed with three types of C hops and Simcoe, which gives this West Coast IPA an aroma that resembles a cat that has peed in a pine tree. Batch 138 finishes dry and crisp and is sure to leave you in hop euphoria.

A: The beer is clear dark yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface and a thick collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of citrusy hops are present in the nose along with some notes of pine.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has a light to moderate amount of bitterness along with hints of underlying caramel malts.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: Compared to most IPAs, the hop aromas, flavors and bitterness in this beer seem to be somewhat subdued and more in line with those of an APA. The beer is rather easy to drink.

Not sure I understand what the hype is... virtually no hop aroma (very malt forward actually) flavor to match. Well made to be sure, but so many vastly superior IPA's here in NYC to choose from.

Bottled 9/05/14: Bomber pours very murky dark gold/brown color with a 1 finger foamy light beige head that faded in average time and left good spotty lacing.

Smells of lemon zest, onion, light grapefruit, herbs and dry floral hops that seem to have leafy dry spices such as tea leaf, marijuana and white pepper mixed in. Inhaling deeper I get more citrus, funky yeast and buttery cracker. Alcohol is completely hidden, but there is a weird urinal smell that pops up – overall decent smelling IPA.

Taste is hoppy but has a little funky at the same time, like brett was used in the mash. Flavor is a mix of grapefruit, orange peel, tangerine, lemon, piney hops, citrus hops variants with coriander and onion swirling around, buttered wheat bread, herbs, spices like pepper and tea leaf, biscuit and cardboard funk. Balance is OK with some more malt presence in the flavors, much more than the nose, but there are some odd characteristics like chlorinated or soapy water coming through. ABV is well hidden and the bitterness is mild, but the hops come off more lemony like Sorachi Ace as it warms up.

Mouthfeel is thin and on the watery side, it slides down easy with mild bitterness, a medium body and light carbonation and a dry finish. It’s a slightly above average IPA that hides the ABV quite well, but after having the Simtra Triple DIPA I find it a bit of a letdown since the brewery set the bar very high with that beer.

From the Knee Deep website: “Knee Deep’s Batch 138 India Pale Ale is brewed with three types of C hops and Simcoe, which gives this West Coast IPA an aroma that resembles a cat that has peed in a pine tree. Batch 138 finishes dry and crisp and is sure to leave you in hop euphoria.” This explains the weird urinal smell that I got in the nose. Cheers.
