This not for the faint of heart beer starts with a big grassy nose with a hint of mint over malt and grain aromas with light fruit.
It pours brilliant gold with a ½” quickly dissipating off-white foam cap that is quickly roused. It produces fine lace and some legs.
The beer looks deceptively mild but that illusion quickly disappears as the glass approaches your mouth. The beer attacks the palate with spicy cola, vanilla, melon, and malt flavors that slowly diminish under a barrage of hop and alcohol flavors. The bitterness reminds me of the kind of bitterness you find in a gin and tonic while the alcohol suggests bourbon.
Each element in this beer – malt, yeast driven flavors, hops and alcohol is huge but they are all amazingly in balance.

Tasted in a 10 ounce snifter at The Library Alehouse SM CA 4.19.13 First off, the nose has notes of pine, citrus and grapefruit. Great lace a resiny feel. Taste is almost too much to bear. I mean that in a good way. Pine needles, tree sap and surfboard resin. If you like Simtra you will love Hopoholic. Must find some more.

The color gives away just how Deranged this is, as the color is a deep dark brown. The nose is certainly hoppy, full of darkness. I'm reminded of a onion bagel as the malt gives some bread and the hops supply the onion, chive, pepper, poppy seed and garlic. I do get a bit of grapefruit and citrus at the back.

The flavor is part sweet, caramel malt, and kind of spicy. The hops emit an onion flavor to me, and again it's that spicy onion from a bagel; garlic maybe. There's a bit of citrus near the end: lemon, orange and tangerines.

Most impressive is the intense ABV that is never perceived. It is incredibly smooth and actually easy too drink which may be a problem as I write this.

Despite the onion dominance, that probably is my palate, I can truly appreciate the craft.

Poured into a Haw River Farmhouse Ales teku glass.

A- Pours a dark amber color with a 1/2 inch bubbly light tan head that retains well before slowly descending to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a bubbly side patch of surface foam. Not-so-resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Tangy, somewhat sweet hop aroma with a malt profile that reminds me of a barleywine but the juicy quality of the hops keep it within IPA territory.

T- Totally mind-boggling that this has a 13% ABV. So smooth and tasty with just enough hop bitterness and flavor. The sturdy malt backbone also keeps things in check. After multiple sips, the alcohol flavor does start to creep in but still ends up being rather complementary. Nice sweetness which once again evokes the barleywine style but the large hop presence once again immediately puts that to rest. Notes of tangerine, orange and grapefruit.

M- Bright, sharp and oily with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- This is incredibly dangerous stuff. I have no idea how they were able to make all the elements so balanced across the board. Share with a friend.

This is a crazy big beer. A bit boozy to start for me but that mellowed out after a few sips and then it leads you into hoppy nirvana. Good stuff, wish i had a fresh example. Hat tip again to metsfan1 for the sample ... Wish we could get something half as good here in GA.

This is a hop bomb! Hazard Class/Division 1.1(sorry the ammo troop reared it's head). The booze was there, masked, but there...kinda snuck up on you as you enjoyed the rest of the bottle. This is an awesome super-duper (quad?) IIPA, but be warned, you will be a tad D-ranged!
