I have been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to try this beer ever since reading about it on the Knee Deep website. This is a special release, single-hop, triple IPA using Amarillo hops.

The problem with eagerly anticipating something is that sometimes the hype does not live up to the experience. Imagine you are a 6 year old little girl that wants a pony for her birthday and you find out a month before your birthday that you are in fact going to get that pony. Then on your birthday you meet your pony, you love your pony, you get to take your pony for ride...now what?

Perhaps this beer is a victim of that same circumstance; I was searching for this beer and eagerly wanting to try it for so long, how could it possibly live up to my expectations. The beer is an excellent example of a triple IPA; Knee Deep never disappoints in this category. Clear copper-ish color, adequate hop nose, nice silky malt mouthfeel, balanced hop flavor, and a pleasant hop bitterness. It is a decent triple IPA, but I like Simtra and Hoptologist better.

If you get a chance to try it, I would recommend it as this is a limited time thing. But don't drive hundreds of miles or spend your kids' lunch money on it in order to try it.

A: medium gold and clear, a few fingers of ivory head, some motes of lace down the glass

S: lotsa of fruity and floral aromas suggesting citrus groves and pith, wet fields and bright flowers

T: juicy citrus right up front, tropical fruits and mild sweetness beneath; edges of caramel and biscuit

M: medium-weight, slight tingle, moderate carbonation, relatively lean for the abv

O: a real nice DIPA/TIPA hop-bomb, featuring some faves in Citra, Amarillo, and Mosaic. Sure to please fans of the style and the hops.

Tad boozy but not over the top. Fairly drinkable.

Nose citrus, tropical fruit, herbal, pine, fresh baked bread. Pours brilliant amber under a 2” white foam cap that produces thick, clingy lace. It has a big bourbon palate with a dash of Regan’s Orange Bitter Number 6 and finishes with a slight alcohol burn. Hints of vanilla and butterscotch in the background. Chewy, creamy and delicious.

Like so many others, I'm an extreme fan of Knee Deep brews. I really looked forward to trying this beer...and it did not disappoint.

The color pours as vibrant as all Knee Deep IPA's....and the aroma Simtra-esque. The balance of sweetness and hoppiness dance well with the high ABV.

Another delicious brew from Knee Deep..!

Bottled on date of 07/16/14

Appearance - Pours crystal clear and pure gold in color with a white, finger width head. Sub-par retention results in a near barren surface and a small ring of suds around the edge. Lacing is small and spotty, with fair stick.

Smell - Tropical aroma, with huge juicy notes of mango, grapefruit, orange and pineapple. Subtle pine resin undertone.

Taste - Tropical hop is the main show here. Big mango and grapefruit. Light pineapple zing. A bit more pine than the aroma led on, with moderate resin flavor hitting mid-taste and into the finish. Some mild orange pith and nutty stonefruit pit in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Full in body with low carbonation. Thick with a touch of syrupy character, but smooth for such a big beer. Dry finish.

Overall - Pretty damn good. Big, but doesn't overwhelm, at least not in the tangible sense. At 11.1% it can creep up on you fast if you aren't prepared. So yeah, anyway, definitely worth a try.

The mix of the three hop brew killer. Wow.. love the extensive bitterness of this beer. This is the style of beer that should ONLY be allowed to be called an IPA. Malt backbone - ha- NONE

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

A deep reddish bronze body, nearly crystal clear, slight bit of dull haze but quite easily can see some great slow rising carbonation. Head is creamy thick, off white and fistfull tall. Big creamy retention and whipped up with some small bubbles mostly and some large pebble sized ones as well.

Solid hop aroma. Juiced orange and spicy malt notes slightly. Some very floral and airy perfume like qualities too. Slightly sweet, and a hint of brown sugar and syrup.

Palate comes really surprisingly in the feel more than anything. Creamed sweet bodyfeel and almost biscuity like malt qualities like an English bitter on the malt angle. Hop angle is nicely subtle with aromatics popping into mint and treacle syrup. Finishes thick and juiced up, with some coating malt and resin. Sweetness comes out quite a bit on the malt angle as well, almost into barleywine territory here.

Overall it's a neat one, but doesn't come off with a huge impression, and seems to get into barleywine stradling territory. Still a solid decent brew.

RB

Picked this up at Brewers Haven Boise a week or so ago, but now most of the Geek places have it on ... cool.

22 for about $8 ... poured tonight into my CC Teku... short lived white head and only decent lacing... nice clear orange brew.

Nose is sweet and bitter.. pithy citrus and a bunch of pale maltiness... fruity hop bowl is reminiscent of papaya, guava and perhaps strawberry.

Bitter up front but a pretty heavy residual maltiness moves in quickly.. tropical fruity hops and some floral hops magically grow wings and move the ABV into the more drinkable realm.. mango and lesser melon, I am impressed.. Bigger ABV and should be enjoyed cool and allowed to warm up... The hops really morph as the temperature changes.. Very well done DIPA.

A- Very light yellow color with just a bit of head that disappears right away.

S- Grass, grass. grass!!! I feel like I'm mowing the lawn on a warm summer day and the wind is blowing the fresh cut blades of grass all around me. I might have just run over a pine cone and a grapefruit also.

T- Follows the nose closely....the citrus comes forward here though.

M- Just fine. So good I don't even notice it.

O- Very impressed!! Will def be getting more...probably tomorrow!

I love the idea of this hop schedule
for a triple the alcohol is well masked. My only problem is i didn't look at bottled on date. 3+ months ago so this probably isn't a great sample but the potential is there. Will have to try a fresh one as i see this could be a great regular find. I'm really starting to hate bevmo and there rotation process. Wine and more here i come. This is a try again fresher.

A: The beer is slightly hazy yellowish amber in color. It poured with a short white head.
S: Moderate aromas of citrus and tropical fruit hops are present in the nose—mangoes seem to stand out in particular.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of tropical fruits such as mango along with notes of citrus and a moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very hop-forward and doesn't have much in the way of balance from the malts, but is really nice if you like IPAs with tropical fruits.

Bought a bomber at a fair price so expecting great things. A-clear amber coloring. Foamy head diminishes but still apparent. Lacing is good. S-pine and malt amount my senses. I detect a floral note masked within. T-agreement with the nose a piney caramely after tone sets in. Bit of mango seeps through to clear it out. M-medium to heavy, for being a triple I would expect as much. The ABV is there so it gives a slight syrupy feel. O-this is what I like in an IPA, be it double or triple, the amount of hops should overwhelm the malt without masking it, giving it an "IPA" balance. Here, such is done, where I can take on those hops but still get a sweet smoothness from the malt. Knee Deep you keep on doing you.

Pours golden with a amarillo hop nose. The draw is clean with a burst of citrus and hops. This does not taste like a heavy beer and could be mistaken as a DIPA. But the hidden ABV needs to be heeded at 11%. Great drinking beer on any hot day.

Served in a tupip glass out of a 22oz bottle dated 5/9/14.
...So obviously really fresh.
Really good beer the appearance was a fairly clear dark amber low head with little lacing. The smell was amazing. Im a big fan of Knee Deep. I absolutely love Simtra and find Hop Shortage very good. This one Smells to me like a cross between fresh Simtra and Hop Shortage... what I mean by that is... Simtra to me is all about the hops, while Hop Shortage has strong hops with a strong carmel malt. Personally, this beer has the really strong hops, yet is a bit more complex than Simtra.

Overall, Knee Deep makes some of the best tripple IPA's out there. Really love this one fresh. Quality.

A: Pours a clear honey yellow/orange in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and hints of apricot + orange highlights. The beer has a half finger tall sudsy foamy off-white head that reduces to a thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of citrus/grapefruit/orange, citrus/grapefruit rind, tropical/mango, and light amounts of grainy malts.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of grainy malts with a light to moderate amount of sweetness. That is followed by moderate to heavy flavors of citrus/grapefruit, citrus/orange, citrus/grapefruit rind, and tropical/mango hops which impart a moderate amount of bitterness which fades pretty quickly.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: Drinks much easier than the fairly high ABV and is quite the hop bomb - though it has really nice flavors and aromas.

Just popped the top on this one bottled in May...it is now August so 3 months old.

First thing to note is the aroma while pouring....sweet Tropical fruit and ..berry notes.
Pours a beautiful amber color with a nice thick white head that relatively quickly turns to a fine lace on the edge of the glass.

Aroma in the glass consists of more big tropical fruit and berry. a touch of piney resin but not much. Hard to believe this is all hop imparted.

on the pallet.... flavor is sweet, blueberries are my first thought, then pineapple and mango. resinous pine finish. the high alcohol is very present in this bottle. As it warms a sharp booziness appears on the tongue with a bit of heat in the belly as well. The 11+% of this beer is defiantly present in this one. 121 IBU is more than my normal "comfort range' but the bitterness is not seems to play well with the sweet berry and mango flavors.

Mouthfeel is thick and bit syrup like, I think i would like a touch more carbonation to help lighten this beer.

Overall a fairly good beer with an amazing aroma but just a bit boozy for my pallet.

Very good and similar to Simtra. The high abv isn't as hidden in this as much it is in the Simtra.
