Pours from tonight's growler a tightly black body with a tan head with decent retention and glass-clinging properties. Aromas tend toward a dark chocolate truffle with faints whiffs of day-old coffee (not a complaint) and pan-burnt brownie bits. The oatmeal comes through on the texture and (too a lesser extent) on the flavor far more than on the nose. The flavors are predominantly roasty with a lingering blast of bitter baking chocolate. The oatmeal features most prominently on the mouthfeel, where it lends a smoothness that makes the bitterness appealing to even my non-beer-drinking wife. There is a sense in which this is all well and good, but for me personally, this light body doesn't reach the gravity that befits such an austere flavor profile.

I am a big oatmeal stout fan and I have had my fair share with Samuel smith being my old fab. This oatmeal stout from mad fox honestly blew my mind. The smoothness of this brew was mind blowing, combined with the 5 % this drink is amazing. Tue flavor honestly was great and plowed threw even with minimal combination. The aroma was there and faint but was great. I happily took my Masala mama growler from the town hall and had it filled with it for new years eve!

On cask at the brewpub Halloween Day 2010.
Pours a very dark brown bordering on black with a thin tan head and some nice lacing. Nose is roasted malt, slight coffee, and a bit if vanilla. Taste is very slight vanilla and roast with a tiny amount if chocolate. Feel is fairly light with low carbonation. Nice and easy drinking.

On tap the brewpub. I liked this beer but the best part was the 5% ABV, otherwise just your regular old stout, maybe a little too thin for an oatmeal stout.
Beer is black with a lazy head of tan bubbles, low carbonation, low retention, no lacing. Looks fine.
Aroma is a little roasty a little sweet. Smells fine.
Beer is medium to light in body and thins out at the end leaving a mildly bitter flavor in the mouth. I don't get much oatmeal from this in the flavor or the body but that's OK. I don't mind, this is a fine stout but I don't think I'd have it again.

I got this on tap at the brewpub served in a shaped pint glass.
A: Almost black in color, with ever the slightest bit of light passing around the edges. The slight one finger head stayed a whipped topping throughout the session.
S: Very much a caramel-coffee scent on this one. Not overbearing (in a "Maxwell House" sort of way), but just right. A touch of barley held it all together.
T: Very full smooth taste, with sort of a warming body that almost seemed bourbon-like. I got a touch of bitterness as the session progress, but nothing out of the ordinary for a brew involving coffee. It had just enough black chocolate to be dangerous!
M: Creamy, fairly thick, and smooth as hell! The oat flakes and carbonation really played a pivotal role in making this one go down very easily.
D: I think I drank the first half of this brew in about a minute. Fantastically drinkable, especially at 5% ABV.
