Poured on tap into a small snifter glass.

Almost jet black but more classic dark black/brown walnut. Presented with a light caramel head that dissolves at a normal clip. Much noticeable rising carbonation, which seems to always keep a good collar.

Move out of the way Founders Backwoods Bastard, though hast met thine match! Nose is a great malty sweetness and caramel, vanilla rich just like Backwoods Bastard. Dying over here.

Taste brings one great thing and one unfortunate thing. Palate is classic Scotch ale wee heavy rich malt and chocolate, a surprisingly bare hint of actual whiskey in the mid palate. Nose brings the caramel to the palate particularly on the swallow. The drink though is way too prickly carbonated and takes away some of the palates pleasures. Slightly wet as well with not much of a body.

Overall if this wasn't so carbonated it would be flat out fantastic. Its a real good beer but to me it has a noticeable flaw.

a: served in a 10 oz snifter, the beer is a deep, nutty brown in color, topped with a thin but persistent layer of khaki colored carbonation

s: the nose opens with rich brown malts and caramelized sugars, nutty, dark fruits, plummy, sweet tobacco, the barrel presence is felt in a sweet oak nose and smooth, pleasant bourbon vanilla

m: silky smooth - medium-full body with a delicate, soft carbonation at low levels

t: richly malty with smoothly toasted brown malts, caramelized toffee sugars, deep dark fruit flavors - plum and raisin, hops subtle, fantastic barrel presence - smooth bourbon and subtle oak flavors, all perfectly balanced with the base beer

o: this one takes an already high quality wee heavy and barrels it to perfection - no harsh booze qualities, and the bourbon/oak in near perfect balance, rich and silky - a pleasure

draft at the brewpub paired with a pretty nice pecan crusted trout

Oak is too drying and the flavor is more tart than I would like/expect from the style.

This is the Wee Heavy aged in Catoctin Creek Rye Whiskey barrels.

Served on cask in a snifter. Color is a very dark brown bordering on black. Nearly opaque with a light tan head and some good retention, though not too much lace. Aroma brings some nice whiskey and light roast. A bit of fruit as well. A bit muted compared to the flavor.

Taste is really nice with a fantastic bit of barrel character. Some nice rye whiskey, which--not being a whiskey/bourbon drinker--I am very surprised I can pick out. Some dark fruits and roast along with some ripe cherries and a bit of booze. Some nice notes of oak and vanilla are there with some very mild chocolate. Feel is ultra smooth with very little alcohol. Medium body and a slightly dry finish with a bit of oak tannin. This is a really nice brew and I'm very glad to finally try one of Bill's barrel-aged beers.

2011 Vintage aged in CC Roundstone Rye White Oak Whiskey Barrels

Dark colored pour, but semi-see through. Brown with only a slight amount of head.

The aroma is of booze, fruit, sweet, Whiskey, and vanilla. Not much Wee Heavy going on here.

The taste continues with booze, a bit thin and light, vanilla, oak, whiskey, and molasses. Again, the barrel aging process has taken a lot out of the base beer.

Heavy body, carbonated fine. Pretty drinkable, but a bit too sweet.

Nothing in this beer stands out for me. Probably wouldn't get it again. Too sweet, too much barrel.

Draft at the source.

Chestnut / burgundy body with a thin collar. Oak, ripe dark fruits, malt, booze. Sweet whiskey with red wine and tannic notes. Lots of oak. Bourbon character is bold throughout. Medium plus body, a bit syrupy. Sweet and sour notes, heating the cheeks in the finish. Intriguing...
