From the menu: "A Stout beer in the style of the great Irish brews made with Pale, Black and Chocolate malts with a heavy use of Roasted Barley to dry out the palate and lend a very roasty finish to this beer. A very malt accented brew that is lightly hopped with the English hop varietal First Gold. This beer is jet black in color and is unfiltered."
Served in a pint glass at the brewpub.
Pours a deep black with a nice off white head. Very creamy. Head lasts around for a pretty long time and it has good retention as well. The nose brings forward a moderate amount of roasted malt and some mild coffee, though nothing much else. A bit plain to lead off, though this picks up in the flavor, as some chocolate comes through in addition to bitter barley and some black coffee. Mouthfeel is really nice and a bit light. Low carbonation. Drinks quite well. A style I haven't come across as often as I should, but I certainly enjoyed this example.

From 04/23/11 notes. Had on tap at the brewpub.
a - Pours a dark brown color with one inch of light tan head and moderate carbonation evident.
s - Smells of roasted malts, chocolate, and toasted malts. Also some light cream.
t - Taste of roasted malts, cream, chocolate, vanilla, and toasted malts. More cream/vanilla than the nose; a tiny step up.
m - Medium body and moderate carbonation; thick and creamy, and very nice.
o - Overall a really nice Irish dry stout, and one of the best beers I've had from Mad Fox to date. It reminded me of Guinness a lot, which I consider a good thing. Something I would love to have again.
