On tap at the brewpub.

Pour yields a medium caramel-colored brew with a thin off-white head. THe nose brings forward some bready malt plus caramel and a bit of American C-type hops. Light grapefruit and a bit of orange. Fairly hoppy, but not overpowering. The flavor is a mixture of light sweetness and a bit of hop bitterness with some citrus and pit fruits mixed in there. Light brown sugar. Medium body with a bit of light alcohol. Pretty good.

From 04/23/11 notes. Had on tap at the brewpub.

a - Pours a dark somewhat transparent orange amber color with one inch of white head and low carbonation evident.

s - Smells of caramel malts, citrus hops, orange, fruity malts. Not bad but a bit odd with the caramel and citrus mixing a lot.

t - Tastes of caramel malts, spices, nutes, bready malts, very light citrus.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Pretty easy to drink, no alcohol warmth.

o - Overall a decent barleywine. I thought the citrus in the nose wa sa little bit odd, but I'd be interested to see if they do anything like barrel aging to it. Would have it again.

Beer is brownish and a little ruby with a tiny off white head with bad retention.

The aroma is sweet with some fruity yeast esters and a mild caramel that is quite pleasant.

Beer is thinner than expected and has some heat to it, mild kick, some hops although the hop component to this beer is understated and subtle. There is a late solvency to this beer that is nearly an aftertaste but ultimately off putting. Overall it is a good beer with an unfortunate finish.

Served in a snifter.

A: Dark amber color, mildly cloudy, and with a slight solid white head that melted down in no time.

S: VERY faint, which was somewhat surprising given the fact that the bartender talked it up as if it was some sort of explosive hop bomb. I did manage to get a puff of something that was very reminiscent of green tea. Go figure....

T: Candy sugar, "Astro Pop"-like even. I got a hint of booze, and even a hint of honey. This had the same sort of aftertaste as some of DFH's historical brews (ex. Midas Touch). Very thin, dry, and even a bit watery on the finish.

M: Extremely sweet, with low carbonation (appropriately so), and traces of booze that became more prominent the more I drank of this one.

O: I expected an American BW, but what I got was a cross between an English BW and a mead. Not horrible, but still disappointing. It's a cool name for a beer, but I still won't be ordering this one again.

A; dark caramel, brown, with a slight head, dissipates quickly like the headcracker's did.

S: toffee, caramel, brown sugarfollowed by huge citrus and grapefruit.delicious smelling.

T: big big caramel, brown sugar and booze flavors then big waves of citrus and grapefruit, with an orange undertone, as it hits the back of the tongue a nice malty background is present.

M: could be thicker, but i chalk that up to being on cask. low low carbonation, nice cask taste.

O: mmm barleywines are hard to find sometimes, and cask barleywines are a special treat.

A: This poured a clear light copper with moderate off-white head.
S: It smelled like faint sweet honey or light caramel and grapefruit, with a little bready yeast.
T: It tasted like grapefruit and pineapple and wax, with a little honey and sugar. It had a lasting bitter aftertaste.
M: It was oily with a little carbonation. Nice and slick from the cask.
D: This was much better than Headcracker (tried side-by-side), although this was still very simple and not very bold. Body was great, but the alcohol was a bit hot, so drinkability was down a bit. An enjoyable drink, but otherwise very forgettable.
