On tap @ the Mad Fox Brewing Company (Falls Church, VA) on 1/28/12. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a hazed copper, with a thin head of bright-white foam. This retains with some fairly frothy edges, leaving back a strong smattering of spotty lace behind. The aroma smells floral and leafy but mostly herbal, with a healthy dose of grapefruit and pine added in. The sweetness of the malts mixes in from underneath, working with the hops to really give this a bitter and fruity twang in the nose.

The taste starts with strong flavorful grapefruit bitterness and a moderately assertive resinous feel. This is helped along though by some herbal textures that run throughout the profile and this is well balanced by a malt backbone of sweet bready grains with maybe an extra splash of caramel thrown in. The finish here is mostly dry, bitter, and piney, but none of it overstays its welcome. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and firm up front but then gets much more slick and creamy feeling on the edges. For an over 7% IPA, I just say that the alcohol here is extremely well hid. Just a little fullness to the body and that’s it.

For an all Centennial hopped IPA, this was pretty darn good. It definitely helps that it’s a hop that brings a lot of different types of character to a beer and they were all well displayed here. I was hoping that the Orange Whip would be on during this visit but this was a more than worthy hoppy substitute. From the sound of previous reviews, it's looks like this one may have been reworked for the better. I wouldn't say that anything about this was subdued.

From tap to pint glass on 4/11/11
*From notes

A: One dark AIPA. It's a cloudy and darkly rich amber - almost ruby. 1.75 finger head, though there isn't a great deal of lacing.

S: Slightly floral and quite bready. It's got an earthy, kinda kolsch-like essence to it. A bit of alcohol is present too, as the 7.3% ABV here can't be completely masked. I should note that the growler I popped the following night showcased a signifigantly larger amount of flowery hops (for which I improved the score).

T: Robust and strikingly heavy. The alcohol and malt dance from the fore to the mid with ease, as the Centennial hops grab for the finish and never let go. It's rather boozy, but really quite enjoyable.

M: Close to perfect. It's creamy and carbonated with precision. This a well balanced and frothy brew.

O: Bill Madden and the Mad Fox crew sure know how to brew an IPA. This is another winner in their ever-growing portfolio. It's certainly not the Orange Whip, but it will surely hold me over until the Whip makes it's EPIC return.

*Paired with Mad Fox's Mediterranean pizza

16 oz. pint glass poured at the brewery on 3/1/14, drank over 30 minutes (including on the tour)

A: 3/3 - amber-brownish coloration, initially frothy white head settles into a subtle glass lacing, little clarity (likely due to hop haze); moderate alcohol legs

S: 10/12 - moderate amount of citrus - grapefruit, tangerine, lemon - and some piney resinousness; also picking up toasty malts (Marris Otter, Vienna); some alcohols as well

T: 16/20 - on the front of the tongue, there is a slap of citrus bitterness - nothing too intense - that develops into more citrus hops flavors - Meyer lemon, tangerine and grapefruit; some moderate malt bitterness and alcohol flavors balance out the hops; dry finish and subtle inviting aftertaste

M: 4/5 - moderate amount of hop oils, some alcohol fullness but generally muted

O: 8/10 - this is a really nice all-Centennial beer, which came as a surprise because, with the exception of Bell's Two Hearted Ale, I am generally not a fan of all-Cascade or Super Cascade beers; like many of their Mad Fox's other hoppy beers, it's more analogous to an English IPA than a West Coast IPA with some toast and roast, which is their modus operandi and fine by me

I revisited this one last night after hearing that the subsequent batches have been much better. The nose was quite nice with plenty of citrus -- dominated by orange peel -- as well as a bit of pine. Flavor hit the same notes. Strong, resiny finish after a medium body. Glad I got this one again.

Original review below: 3.5 / 2.5 / 3.0 / 3.5 / 2.5

From their Facebook page: "Broad Street IPA - 7.3% ABV - An American-style India Pale Ale that is brewed with 100% Centennial hops from the Pacific Northwest and then dry- hopped with over 44 pounds of Centennial as well for an extra fresh hop punch. This beer has a fresh resiny herbal and citrusy grapefruit aroma that follows through to a tingling hoppy herbal bitterness in the finish."

On tap at the brewpub. Served in a pint glass.

Pour yields a moderate caramel-colored brew with a thin white head and a bit of light lacing as it goes down. The nose has a bit of light citrus but overall the hop presence is extremely restrained. Not much malt there in the background, either. Pretty plain overall. The flavor is along the same lines. There isn't too much malt character and the hop presence is really subdued. If I try hard, a bit of citrus, but really not much else, unfortunately. Medium body with a light bitterness in the finish. Overall, not a big fan of this; I'm very excited for Citra to make a comeback so we can get more Orange Whip.

From 04/23/11 notes. Had on tap at the brewpub.

a - Pours a clear reddish amber color with one inch of white head and low carbonation evident.

s - Smells of pine hops, citrus hops, and floral hops. Lots of nice hops, very enjoyable.

t - Tastes of pine hops, light citrus hops, herbal notes, grapefruit, centennial hops. Not quite as strong as the taste; a small step down though still nice.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

o - Overall I thought this was a very nice IPA from Mad Fox; one of the better beers I had that night.
